The cognitive dimension of mental energy can be assessed by tests of vigilance and choice reaction time. These behaviors are relatively simple cognitive functions and can be measured with precision and reliability if carefully designed and implemented tests are used. Because the concept of mental energy is still evolving, the selection of appropriate tests to assess it must be tentative. However, vigilance and choice reaction time seem to have the necessary psychometric properties for assessing mental energy, including construct, predictive content, and face validity. Tests of reaction time and vigilance are correlated with questionnaires that measure mood states corresponding to mental energy—such as sleepiness, fatigue, and alertness—in the expected manner and are of approximately equivalent sensitivity.  相似文献

There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating that stress decreases the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in limbic structures that control mood and that antidepressant treatment reverses or blocks the effects of stress. Decreased levels of BDNF, as well as other neurotrophic factors, could contribute to the atrophy of certain limbic structures, including the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex that has been observed in depressed subjects. Conversely, the neurotrophic actions of antidepressants could reverse neuronal atrophy and cell loss and thereby contribute to the therapeutic actions of these treatments. This review provides a critical examination of the neurotrophic hypothesis of depression that has evolved from this work, including analysis of preclinical cellular (adult neurogenesis) and behavioral models of depression and antidepressant actions, as well as clinical neuroimaging and postmortem studies. Although there are some limitations, the results of these studies are consistent with the hypothesis that decreased expression of BDNF and possibly other growth factors contributes to depression and that upregulation of BDNF plays a role in the actions of antidepressant treatment.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of postinjection transmission scanning (Post-Tx) on both the qualitative interpretation and the quantitative analysis of cardiac (18)F-FDG PET images. Furthermore, the accuracy of 2 different methods to correct for emission contamination was studied. An additional aim of this study was to compare images reconstructed with both standard filtered backprojection (FBP) and an iterative reconstruction algorithm (ordered-subset maximization expectation [OSEM]). METHODS: Sixteen patients underwent dynamic (18)F-FDG imaging. Both before injection of (18)F-FDG and after completing the emission scan, a 10-min transmission scan was performed (Pre-Tx and Post-Tx, respectively). Images were reconstructed using both FBP and OSEM. The emission study reconstructed with Pre-Tx was considered to be the gold standard. Emission studies were also reconstructed with Post-Tx, with and without correction for emission contamination. Correction for emission contamination was performed with either transmission image segmentation (TIS) or by estimating the emission bias from the last emission frame (dwell profile [DP] method). All images were then compared by calculating ratios of (18)F-FDG activity between corresponding myocardial segments in each patient. Furthermore, qualitative grading of (18)F-FDG uptake was compared between the studies. RESULTS: The mean ratio of (18)F-FDG activity between segments from FBP-Post and FBP-Pre was 0.78 +/- 0.08. When TIS and DP were used, the mean ratios were 0.80 +/- 0.07 and 0.94 +/- 0.06, respectively. The use of OSEM resulted in, on average, 2% lower values for (18)F-FDG activity as compared with FBP. The mean normalized (18)F-FDG uptake was higher in FBP-Post, especially in segments with decreased (18)F-FDG activity. Only in the case of DP were no significant differences observed as compared with FBP-Pre. In general, qualitative analysis of the images showed that the agreement between the reconstruction methods was comparable with the reproducibility of FBP-Pre. CONCLUSION: Post-Tx for attenuation correction in cardiac (18)F-FDG PET scans resulted in substantial underestimation of (18)F-FDG activity. More accurate results were obtained with correction for emission contamination using DP. Differences in visual assessment of (18)F-FDG images were small. Finally, iterative reconstruction could be used as an alternative to FBP in static (18)F-FDG imaging of the heart.  相似文献

Objective: To examine moderating effects of family functioningand social support on the relationship of child-related stressorsto caregivers' psychological adaptation in a sample of caregiversof children with a chronic illness. Method: Participants were 67 caregivers of children and adolescentswith sickle cell syndromes. We conducted MANOVAs and subsequenteffect size calculations to determine if family functioningwould buffer the effects of caring for difficult-to-manage childrenwith this illness. Results: Findings supported a moderator effect of family functioningon the association of children's externalizing behavioral problemsto caregivers symptoms of hostility. Greater levels of cohesiveand adaptive family functioning buffered the potential detrimentaleffects of caring for children perceived as hard to manage.No significant associations were obtained between measures ofcaregivers' psychological adaptation and the severity of theirchildren's disease. Conclusions: We make recommendations for family systems interventions,particularly for caregivers of children with behavior problems.  相似文献

Rod photoreceptors of mammalian retinas contain a 33-kDa phosphoprotein, phosducin, which complexes with the beta, gamma-subunits of transducin (T beta gamma). The level of phosducin phosphorylation is modulated by light, suggesting that the phosducin/T beta gamma complex has a pivotal role in light-regulated events that occur in photoreceptors. We have investigated, in developing mouse retinas, the age at which the complex is first detected and the subsequent accumulation of the phosducin/T beta gamma complex during postnatal life. Western blot analysis detected immunoreactivity both for phosducin and T beta in retinal homogenates of 3-day-old mice. Thereafter, the level of immunoreactivity for both proteins increased steadily, to reach adult levels in the next 2 postnatal weeks. Gel filtration analysis of extracts from immature mouse retina showed that phosducin and T beta co-eluted, like the phosducin/T beta gamma complex of adult retina, as a 77-kDa complex, indicating that the phosducin/T beta gamma complex is formed when photoreceptors first synthesize the components of the complex. While the levels of the phosducin/T beta gamma complex increased steadily during the first 2 postnatal weeks, the subunits of transducin complex, T alpha together with additional amounts of T beta gamma, only started to appear around the 7-9th postnatal day, and the level of transducin complex increased sharply at 11-14 days to reach adult levels that are similar to those of phosducin/T beta gamma complex.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The mutational specificity of the syn dihydrodiol epoxide of 5-methylchrysene in the supF gene of the pSP189 vector was examined. Transversion mutations at GC pairs predominated with G → T and G → C changes accounting for 42 and 21% of total base change mutations. The types of mutations found reflect the previously determined chemical preference of this reactive species for reaction with deoxyguanosine residues in DNA.  相似文献

Exposure of animals to aversive events produces stress-induced analgesia. A common method of producing stress in animals is the cold-water swim (CWS). The present series of experiments examines the effect of CWS on tonic pain, as measured by the formalin test, and explores possible mechanisms of action. Experiment 1 demonstrates that a 3.5-min swim in 2°C water produces a delayed nociceptive response (DNR), characterized by a prolonged period of no formalin responding which then begins and continues during the time when control animals, which have not received the CWS, are finished responding. The delayed response begins at 50–60 min postformalin injection, peaks at 80 min, and is still present at 120 min. Experiment 2 indicates that paw temperature effects are not responsible for the DNR, although core body temperature effects are a possible mechanism. However, systematic delays in the formalin injection following the CWS (Experiment 3) drastically altered the DNR even though core body temperature remained unchanged, suggesting that a decrease of core body temperature is insufficient to account for the DNR. Experiment 4 demonstrates that the NMDA antagonist MK-801 administered prior to the CWS dramatically reduces the DNR. The present experiment is the first study that reports a delay as long as 60 min in pain responding. It is concluded that the delayed response to formalin injection is the result of complex interactions involving peripheral mechanisms and central neuronal plasticity in which activity initiated by a noxious input persists after the cessation of the input as a consequence of a stressful event such as the cold-water swim.  相似文献
