Legionnaires' Disease in Leukaemic Reticuloendotheliosis

At our hospital 15 cases of leukaemic reticuloendotheliosis and 4 cases of Legionnaires' disease have been diagnosed. 3 patients had both diseases. The clinical findings are reported. It is probable that patients with leukaemic reticuloendotheliosis have an increased susceptibility to Legionnaires' disease. Possible reasons for the decreased resistance are discussed.

Human spumaretrovirus antibody reactivity in multiple sclerosis

The role of human spumaretrovirus (HSRV) infections in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) was investigated with recombinant HSRV env-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The presence of HSRV antibodies was determined in pairs of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 60 MS patients. In 7 of these patients serial serum and CSF samples were obtained in relation to the clinical activity of the disease during a period of 2 years. No increased antibody reactivity was demonstrable in the MS population compared with 14 aseptic meningitis patients, 50 blood donors and 16 healthy controls. Slightly elevated levels of antibodies were demonstrable in serum and/or CSF in 4 MS patients but also in 1 patient with aseptic meningitis, 1 blood donor and 1 child. No marked serum or CSF HSRV antibody fluctuation was observed in the MS patients followed longitudinally. Thus, this study does not support the involvement of HSRV in the pathogenesis of MS.     

A large collar increases neck resorption in total hip replacement:204 hips evaluated during 5 years

We evaluated the effect of a prosthetic collar on the proximal femoral bone in 204 hips without any signs of loosening after 5 years. The patients were operated on at 5 centers, using different prosthetic designs, but the same cementing technique. Resorption was more often found in cases with a true and large collar (Lubinus, HD2, Scanhip) than in cases with a flanged or tapered stem (Chamley, Exeter). The resorption was also more pronounced with the former designs. It was concluded that, in spite of theoretical advantages, a large collar is not only unnecessary but may also have negative long-term effects.     

Evaluation of quinolinic acid induced excitotoxic neurodegeneration in rat striatum by quantitative magnetic resonance imaging in vivo.

Excitotoxic neurodegeneration in the rat striatum was induced by direct injection of quinolinic acid. The degree of damage was evaluated in vivo 1 day later by quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 7 days later in the same animals by measuring the activities of the neuronal marker enzymes choline acetyltransferase and glutamic acid decarboxylase. Striatal damage assessed using the two approaches was highly correlated. Moreover the cerebroprotective efficacy of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist CGP 40116 was indistinguishable based on all analytical parameters. MRI, however, was more reproducible than the enzymatic methods and was faster and simpler for routine analyses of excitotoxic damage and cerebroprotection in vivo.     

Lack of correlation after reperfusion between ventricular function and infarct size estimated by thallium single-photon emission computed tomography

In 32 patients with acute myocardial infarction, who had undergone successful intracoronary thrombolysis, the results of regional wall motion measured from contrast cineangiograms 10 to 21 days after thrombolysis were related to the results of thallium single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) after intravenous dipyridamole. Wall motion was measured by means of the centerline method, and thallium defect size was estimated by comparing the patient's circumferential profile with that of 20 normals. No correlation was found between ejection fraction or regional wall motion and thallium defect size. The time from symptom onset to thrombolysis was inversely correlated with the degree of hypokinesis (r=–0.51) but not with thallium defect size. In patients treated within 3 hours, hypokinesis was significantly less than in patients treated later (–1.1±0.6 SD vs –2.2±0.8 SD, p<0.01) whereas thallium defect size was not significantly different in both groups. It is concluded that, in patients after thrombolysis, thallium defect size determined by SPECT does not reflect the degree of left ventricular dysfunction.     

Comparative investigation of hair with the genRES® MPX-SP1, genRES MPX-SP2, and genRES MPX-2 kits

In recent years there has been considerable improvement in short-tandem repeat (STR) investigations of hair, which were previously marred by small amounts of nuclear DNA and its degradation. This study examined the suitability of two STR kits with shortened amplicons for the investigation of hairs from routine casework. The overall sucess rate was more than 20%. Furthermore, the usefulness of quantification with real-time ploymerase chain reaction as a screening method was demonstrated.
