Blood pressure levels of preterm infants in the first year of life

Systolic blood pressure was measured in 36 infants with median gestational age of 29 weeks (range 24–35 weeks) and birth weight of 1160 g (range 642–1500 g). Measurements were made at 1, 6 and 12 weeks, and subsequently at 12-weekly intervals during the first year of life. No infant developed chronic lung disease. Systolic blood pressure increased over the first 24 weeks ( p < 0.001) to a mean value of 95 mmHg, but did not change significantly over the next 24 weeks. These data provide a reference range of blood pressure levels during the first year of life for infants born at an early gestational age.     

A recombinant yeast strain as a short term bioassay to assess estrogen-like activity of xenobiotics

The study investigated the responsiveness of a recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast strain to screen estrogen-like chemicals in order to use it as a first level short-term bioassay for environmental preventive medicine purposes. We used the yeast strain RMY326 ER-ERE, containing the human estrogen receptor alpha and a reporter gene lacZ encoding the enzyme b-galactosidase. We tested the natural steroid hormone 17beta-estradiol, diethylstilbestrol, colchicine, some phytoestrogens and pesticides, and organochlorine insecticides. The relative inductive efficiency (RIE) and EC50 values confirmed the sensitivity and specificity of the yeast strain. A statistically significant reproducibility of results in repeated experiments was assessed.     

New proposal for the treatment of nodular basal cell carcinoma with intralesional 5-aminolevulinic acid

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment modality using a photosensitizer, light and oxygen to cause photochemically-induced selective cell death. Topical PDT is most suitable for thin lesions such as superficial basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratoses in dermatology. Results with PDT as treatment of thicker lesions such as nodular basal cell carcinoma appear to have a limited role because the photosensitizer or the light cannot penetrate deeply enough into the thicker tumor volume. In this preliminary study we use intralesional administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid to enhance the efficacy of the photosensitivity of nodular basal cell carcinomas, thus improving clinical cure.     

Liquid ventilation in an infant with persistent interstitial pulmonary emphysema

We present the case of a full term infant affected by diffuse persistent interstitial pulmonary emphysema (PIPE), who was treated with partial liquid ventilation (PLV) after the failure of conventional management. PIPE is a lethal chronic lung disease of unclear pathogenesis. Clinical history, radiological and histological findings confirmed the diagnosis in our patient. PLV applied for 48 hours resulted in a significant improvement in the infant's respiratory function and was not associated with adverse effects. We concluded that PLV could be effective in prolonging the survival of infants with PIPE; its application represents an effective form of respiratory support in infants with chronic lung disease.
