Aim
This community-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and their association with nutritional behavior and other determinants.Subjects and methods
Arabic-speaking women, aged 15–49 years old, residing in Lebanon’s rural areas were included. Demographic and behavioral characteristics, obstetrical and gynecological history, personal and family medical history, and dietary intake data were collected. Predictors of anemia and IDA were determined using logistic regression.Results
A total of 578 women were included (Lebanese: 55.2%; Syrian: 43.3%) in which 35.5% had anemia and 23.2% had IDA. The mean number of pregnancies was 3.1 ± 3.0 (number of children: 2.5 ± 2.5). In total, 30% had a personal history of anemia or IDA, 29% a family history of anemia, and 20% a family history of IDA. Iron-rich products were consumed by >?90% of the women, whereby >?66.7% mentioned eating liver, tuna, dates and nuts. Syrian nationality (OR = 2.21; CI 95%: 1.38–3.54), age (OR = 1.03, CI 95%: 1.00–1.06), personal history of anemia (OR = 1.97; CI 95%: 1.31–2.95), consumption of dates (OR = 2.07, CI 95%: 1.29–3.31), molasses (OR = 1.61; CI 95%: 1.03–2.51), and soft drinks >?5 times/week (OR = 1.66; CI 95%: 1.09–2.53) were predictors of anemia. Syrian nationality (OR = 1.73, CI 95%: 1.14–2.62), number of pregnancies (OR = 1.08; CI 95%: 1.01–1.15), period >?8 days (OR = 2.01, CI 95%: 1.07–3.80), consumption of eggs (OR = 0.48; CI 95%: 0.25–0.90), dates (OR = 2.58, CI 95%: 1.49–4.46), and coffee or tea (OR = 1.59, CI 95%: 1.03–2.45) were predictors of IDA.Conclusion
Anemia and IDA are prevalent in women of childbearing age in rural Lebanon. Intervention programs for raising the population’s awareness about IDA’s risk factors and proper nutrition must be implemented.152.

Detection of urokinase plasminogen activator receptor and c-erbB-2 in sera of patients with breast and ovarian carcinoma 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The role of urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) and c-erbB-2 in breast and ovarian cancer was investigated. Eighty patients of breast and ovarian cancer and benign lesions, as well as twenty normal controls were evaluated for the expression of c-erbB-2 by Western blotting and uPAR levels by ELISA. The c-erbB-2 and uPAR showed a significant increase in both types of cancer investigated compared to normal control and benign lesions. The frequency of c-erbB-2 was significantly higher in breast cancer lesions (p < 0.01). Levels of CA15.3 in breast cancer and CA125 in ovarian cancer were significantly higher in cases expressing c-erbB-2 (p < 0.01) than in negative c-erbB-2 cases. The uPAR showed a significant positive correlation with advanced stages of breast cancer (r = 0.7971) and ovarian cancer (r = 0.83662), while significant correlations were found for CA15.3 in breast cancer (r = 0.64967) and CA125 in ovarian cancer (r = 0.83996). Taken together, our data suggest that the c-erbB-2 and uPAR in the sera of ovarian and breast cancer act as valuable markers for the evaluation of the patients preoperatively. 相似文献

Only a subset of cancer patients inoculated with oncolytic herpes simplex virus (oHSV) type-1 has shown objective response in phase 1 and 2 clinical trials. This has raised speculations whether resistance of tumor cells to oHSV therapy may be a limiting factor. In this study, we have identified established and patient derived primary glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) stem cell lines (GSC) resistant to oHSV and also to tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) that has recently shown promise in preclinical and initial clinical studies. We created a recombinant oHSV bearing a secretable TRAIL (oHSV-TRAIL) and hypothesized that oHSV-TRAIL could be used as a cancer therapeutic to target a broad spectrum of resistant tumors in a mechanism-based manner. Using the identified resistant GBM lines, we show that oHSV-TRAIL downregulates extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK)-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and upregulates c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38-MAPK signaling, which primes resistant GBM cells to apoptosis via activation of caspase-8, -9, and -3. We further show that oHSV-TRAIL inhibits tumor growth and invasiveness and increases survival of mice bearing resistant intracerebral tumors without affecting the normal tissues. This study sheds new light on the mechanism by which oHSV and TRAIL function in concert to overcome therapeutic-resistance, and provides an oncolytic virus based platform to target a broad spectrum of different cancer types. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Chromium is a key micronutrient required for lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Some but not all clinical trials have associated use of chromium supplements with improved insulin sensitivity and lipid profile including increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. METHODS: Because apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) is the principal protein of high-density lipoprotein, the molecular pathways underlying chromium-related changes in apoA-I expression were studied in a human hepatoma cell line (HepG2) transfected with full-length apoA-I promoter attached to the reporter chloramphenicol acetyl transferase gene. RESULTS: Exposure of these cells to different concentrations of chromium chloride (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0 mM) resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in apoA-I promoter activity (chloramphenicol acetyl transferase activity expressed as a percentage of an internal control was 99.4 +/- 7.2% in control cells versus 87.6 +/- 5.0%, 73.4 +/- 2.3%, and 36.6 +/- 3.9%, respectively, P < 0.01). Chromium chloride at 10 mM concentration was toxic and caused death in a large number of cells. Treating HepG2 cells with other minerals known to have insulin-sensitizing effects such as magnesium (1 mM), zinc (0.2 mM), and vanadyl sulfate (0.1 mM) significantly reduced apoA-I promoter activity in the presence and absence of 100 microU/mL of insulin. Northern blot analyses showed that the apoA-I mRNA content of cells treated with 0.2 mM of chromium chloride relative to G3PDH mRNA was not significantly increased compared with controls (0.652 +/- 0.122 versus 0.745 +/- 0.143, the ratio of apoA-I to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH) mRNA in control and chromium-treated cells, respectively). Western blot analyses of proteins secreted in culture media indicated that neither chromium treatment of the HepG2 cells (858.0 +/- 151.4 arbitrary units) nor treatment with magnesium (1323.3 +/- 175.7) or vanadium (1102 +/- 78.7) significantly altered apoA-I concentrations compared with controls (1061.7 +/- 114.7). However treatment of HepG2 cells with 0.2 mM of zinc significantly reduced apoA-I concentrations (291.0 +/- 29.2 versus 1061.7 +/- 114.7; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Supraphysiologic concentrations of chromium and other minerals with known insulin-sensitizing activity may reduce apoA-I promoter activity in cultured cells. Whether similar changes may occur in vivo remains to be shown. However, these observations do not support the use of pharmacologic amounts of chromium supplementation to enhance the cardioprotective lipid profile. 相似文献

Repair for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) with complete atrioventricular septal defect (CAVSD) has been reported with good early and intermediate outcomes. Morbidity, however, remains significantly high. To date, repair of CAVSD/TOF using a pulmonary valve-sparing technique (PVS) and freedom from valve reoperation are not well defined. A study was undertaken to investigate outcomes. This study was conducted in as a retrospective investigation. Between January 1988 and December 2008, 13 consecutive patients with CAVSD/TOF were identified, and their records were reviewed retrospectively. Of these 13 patients, 9 had Rastelli type C CAVSD. Trisomy 21 was present in 9 cases (69 %; 7 with type C). Five patients had received a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt (SPS) before complete repair at a mean age 1.7 ± 0.6 months. All the patients survived until complete repair. At complete CAVSD/TOF repair, AVSD was corrected with a two-patch technique in all patients. For eight patients (61.5 %), PVS was used. The remaining five patients had transannular patch (TAP) repair. The mean age at complete repair was 6.3 ± 2.4 months. At complete repair, the mean cardiopulmonary bypass time was 173.5 ± 30.6 min, and the cross-clamp time was 134.7 ± 28.8 min. There was one hospitalization and no late deaths. The median follow-up period was 9.2 years [interquartile range (IQR), 4.7–13.3 years]. The actuarial survival was 90.0 ± 9.5 % at 1 year, 90 ± 9.5 % at 5 years, and 90 ± 9.5 % at 8 years. Of the 12 survivors, 6 had some reintervention during the follow-up period. Within the first 11 years after complete repair, two patients underwent left atrioventricular (AV) valve repair, and one patient had right AV valve repair. Two patients had residual VSD closure. Four patients underwent the first right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reintervention for critical insufficiency or stenosis at a mean interval of 6 ± 21) months. One patient had a second RVOT reoperation. Findings showed that CAVSD/TOF with PVS was related to significantly higher freedom from RVOT reintervention (100 % at 1, 5, and 8 years compared with 80 ± 17.9 % at 1 year, 60 ± 21.9 % at 5 years, and 40 ± 21.9 % at 8 years for CAVSD/TOF using TAP; P < 0.05). No patient who underwent PVS had left ventricular outflow tract obstruction requiring reoperation. Overall freedom from any reintervention was 90.9 ± 8.6 % at 1 year, 71.6 ± 14.0 % at 5 years, and 53.7 ± 8.7 % at 8 years in this group of patients. Correction of TOF with CAVSD can be performed at low risk with favorable intermediate-term survival and satisfactory freedom from reoperation. Use of TAP can be avoided in almost two thirds of patients and may influence freedom from early RVOT reintervention. 相似文献

Catechin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects. Cardiotoxicity, which results from intense cardiac oxidative stress and inflammation, is the main limiting factor of the adriamycin use in the treatment of malignant tumors. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of catechin on adriamycin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Forty-five rats were allocated to three groups: control group, adriamycin group and adriamycin?+?catechin group. We performed the following measurements: lipid peroxidation (MDA), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities as well as, the expression of inflammatory cytokines genes namely nuclear factor kappa-B, tumor necrosis factor and inducible nitric oxide synthase. Catechin administration significantly decreased MDA level and significantly increased CAT, GSH-Px and SOD activities. Also, catechin significantly decreased the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines. Catechin provided cardioprotection on adriamycin-induced cardiotoxicity through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. 相似文献
