Summary: Fifty-seven isolates of Basidiobolus from reptiles and amphibians, and 7 other obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Maryland were studied for their extracellular enzyme activities on solid media. The Conidiobolus isolates studied included 4 recovered from Nigerian soil and additional 4 obtained from the ATCC All these isolates produced active extracellular lipase and protease and failed to exhibit amylase, deoxyribonuclease and ribonuclease activities. The significance of the findings is discussed.
Zusammenfassung: Fünfundsiebzig Basidiobolus-Isolate aus Reptilien und Amphibien und sieben weitere aus der American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Maryland wurden auf Aktivtäten extrazellulärer Enzyme auf festen Medien untersucht Die untersuchten Conidiobolus-Isolate schlossen vier aus nigerianischen Böden und vier weitere aus der ATCC ein. Alle Isolate zeigten extrazellulär Lipase- und Proteaseaktivität Amylase-, Desoxyribonuclease- und Ribonucleaseaktivität war jedoch nicht nachzuweisen. Forty-nine children with asthma and their mothers were interviewed regarding their knowledge of asthma, factors that precipitated attacks, and how they attempted to reduce the probability of an attack. Many mothers and children were well aware of factors that precipitated attacks, but took little positive action to reduce attacks. The data suggest that much ill-health in asthmatic children could be reduced by improving education available to mothers and children.  相似文献

A review of the literature shows a growing interest in non-auditory effects of noise at work. Somatic, vestibular and psychological effects and different kinds of activity interferences are described. Suggestive evidence of an elevation of the blood pressure by noise exists, although the quality of the studies is limited. Many non-auditory effects can be described in a stress model. Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from environmental sources and bacteremic patients were compared for their levels of elastolytic activity. No significant differences were found. The incidence of production of toxin A, phospholipase C, alkaline protease, and elastase among the environmental strains was also as high as that previously reported for clinical isolates.  相似文献

The pathogenesis of neuropathy and other late, degenerative complications of diabetes remains largely unresolved. Metabolic derangements thought to be responsible for their development are induced by chronic hyperglycaemia. The present studies concern as follows: sorbitol accumulation due to increased polyol pathway activity, altered myoinositol metabolism in diabetic nerve, followed by diminished sodium-potassium ATPase activity, nonenzymatic glycosylation of structural proteins and rheologic changes in microcirculation. These processes impair nerve metabolism, function and structure directly or indirectly, due to primary vascular alternations and endoneural hypoxia. Partial elucidation of the mechanism involved in pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy has provoked emergence of new therapeutic approaches. So far their results are equivocal and require further studies. At present, improved glycaemia control is undoubtedly the most important factor in prevention and treatment of neuropathy and other late complications of diabetes.  相似文献

Using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunoassay, plasma total cathepsin D concentration was assayed in 40 breast cancer patients and 84 patients with various liver diseases and compared to that of 52 normal subjects. There were no significant variations found in breast cancer patients related to tumor size, node invasiveness or metastases. In normal women, cathepsin D levels were slightly but not significantly increased in the luteal phase and in pregnancy. By contrast, plasma cathepsin D concentration was significantly increased in 70-75% of patients with liver disease (cirrhosis, hepatocarcinoma, hepatitis), but not in those with liver steatosis. Cathepsin D was independent of most of the plasma hepatic function tests and was correlated with alpha-fetoprotein in cirrhosis and with alpha-fucosidase in primary hepatocellular carcinoma. We conclude that plasma cathepsin D is not a useful marker in breast cancer. However, since the cellular level of this protease is associated with risk of metastasis in breast cancer, clinical follow-up will be required to test whether high cathepsin D plasma concentration has any prognostic value in liver cirrhosis and primary hepatocarcinoma.  相似文献
