BACKGROUND: Mycobacteria are being investigated for modulation of inflammation in asthma and atopic disorders by eliciting particularly strong protective TH1 immune responses. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the long-term effects of intratracheally administered Mycobacterium vaccae on an experimental murine model of asthma. METHODS: BALB/c mice were placed in 4 groups: long-term M. vaccae, M. vaccae, asthma, and control groups. All groups but controls were sensitized intraperitoneally and challenged intratracheally with ovalbumin. The long-term M. vaccae and M. vaccae groups were treated with M. vaccae intratracheally simultaneously during challenges. Finally, mice in the long-term M. vaccae group were rechallenged with ovalbumin nebulization 24 days later. Evaluations of lung histopathologic findings and serum cytokine levels were performed. RESULTS: Comparison of the long-term M. vaccae group with the asthma model group revealed that the number of hyperplasic goblet cells in small and large airways (small airway: P < .05; large airways: P < .01) and thickness of basement membrane in large airways were significantly less in the long-term M. vaccae group. Furthermore, numbers of hyperplasic goblet cells in small airways (P < .05) and basement membrane in the large airway (P < .05), as well as inflammation in small airways (P < .01), were significantly less in the M. vaccae group when compared with the asthma model group. Interferon-gamma secretion from splenocytes of the M. vaccae group was significantly higher than the asthma model and long-term M. vaccae groups. CONCLUSION: Intratracheal administration of M. vaccae exerted a long-lasting ameliorating effect on airway histopathologic features of a murine asthma model. 相似文献

Statistical shape analysis, a relatively a new method for biological research, compares body forms by using specific landmarks determined by anatomical prominences. In this study, we aimed to identify normal facial asymmetry between the right and the left sides of the face. Facial landmark data were collected from two‐dimensional digital images of 321 young healthy subjects (150 males and 171 females). These data were analysed using Euclidean distance matrix analysis. The number of significantly asymmetric linear distances between the two halves of the face was greater in females than in males. We found that the left side of the face was most commonly dominant in both males and females. Such data may be useful in establishing a database for future similar studies. 相似文献

Follicular variant papillary thyroid carcinoma (FVPTC) is the most common variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) after
classical PTC (CPTC). In this study, we aimed to compare functional status, ultrasonographical features, cytological results,
and histopathological characteristics of patients with CPTC and FVPTC. Preoperative thyroid functions, thyroid autoantibodies,
ultrasonographical features, cytology, and histopathology results of 354 (79.9%) CPTC and 90 (20.3%) FVPTC patients were reviewed
retrospectively. Sex distribution, mean age, thyroid autoantibody positivity, and thyroid dysfunctions were similar in two
groups. Among 320 patients with preoperative ultrasonography (US) findings, a hypoechoic halo was observed more frequently
(p = 0.003), and marginal irregularity was observed less commonly (p = 0.024) in FVPTC lesions. In CPTC, rate of malignant cytology (p = 0.001), and in FVPTC, rate of suspicious cytology (p < 0.001) were significantly higher. Histopathologically, mean tumor diameter was markedly higher in FVPTC compared to CPTC
(16.89 ± 13.86 vs 10.64 ± 9.70 mm, p < 0.001), while capsular invasion and extrathyroidal spread were significantly lower in patients with FVPTC (p = 0.018 and p = 0.039, respectively). FVPTC tend to have more benign features in US and less malignant results in cytology. Higher tumor
size in FVPTC might be explained by the recognition of clinical importance of these lesions after reaching particular sizes

Purpose: We investigated the optimal cut-off level for urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in preeclamptic patients to confirm the diagnosis.
Methods: Urinary NGAL concentrations were measured by specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Results: Patients with preeclampsia had significantly higher urinary NGAL concentrations than controls (mean: 387 ng/ml vs. 188 ng/ml, respectively; P< 0.001). Using a cutoff value 252 ng/ml for urinary NGAL to confirm diagnosis of preeclampsia, sensitivity, and specificity were 92% and 91%, respectively.
Conclusion: Urinary NGAL concentrations were significantly elevated in women with preeclampsia versus normotensive controls. 相似文献

This study was conducted to reveal the morphometric and morphological features of foot pads in the Anatolian bobcat (Lynx lynx). To achieve this objective, dissection, histological, and radiography techniques were applied to two dead materials obtained from the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Forest and Water Works Sivas Branch Manager. Digit I is radiographically rudimentary in the forepaw. The paws of the forelimb of the Anatolian bobcat have a carpal, a metacarpal, and four digital pads, while the hind feet have a metatarsal pad and four digital pads. The metacarpal pad is cone‐like, while the metatarsal pad resembles a butterfly. The digital pads in the paws of the forelimb are longer and thinner than in the paws in the hind feet. The paws in both feet are situated as binary. Through histological examination, it was determined that the skin of the foot pads consists of epidermis, dermis, and pad cushion. The epidermis is subdivided into basal, spinous, granular, lucidum, and corneum layers. OBJECTIVE:
Strain and strain rate imaging is currently the most popular echocardiographic technique that reveals subclinical myocardial damage. There are currently no available data on this imaging method with regard to assessing right ventricular involvement in anterior myocardial infarction. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate right ventricular regional functions using a derived strain and strain rate imaging tissue Doppler method in patients who were successfully treated for their first anterior myocardial infarction.METHODS:
The patient group was composed of 44 patients who had experienced their first anterior myocardial infarction and had undergone successful percutaneous coronary intervention. Twenty patients were selected for the control group. The right ventricular myocardial samplings were performed in three regions: the basal, mid, and apical segments of the lateral wall. The individual myocardial velocity, strain, and strain rate values of each basal, mid, and apical segment were obtained.RESULTS:
The right ventricular myocardial velocities of the patient group were significantly decreased with respect to all three velocities in the control group. The strain and strain rate values of the right mid and apical ventricular segments in the patient group were significantly lower than those of the control group (excluding the right ventricular basal strain and strain rate). In addition, changes in the right ventricular mean strain and strain rate values were significant.CONCLUSION:

Paraoxonase-1 is an esterase enzyme and it has 3 types of activity, namely paraoxonase, arylesterase, and diazoxonase. It has been reported that paraoxonase-1 deficiency is related to increased susceptibility to development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in children with iron deficiency anemia and vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia. Thirty children with iron deficiency anemia, 30 children with vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia, and 40 healthy children aged 6 months to 6 years were enrolled in this study. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured with a spectrophotometer by using commercially available kits. Mean paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia group (103 ± 73 and 102 ± 41 U/L, respectively) were significantly lower than mean activities of control group (188 ± 100 and 147 ± 34 U/L, respectively; P < .001 for both) and iron deficiency anemia group (165 ± 103 and 138 ± 39 U/L, respectively; P < .05, P < .001), whereas there were no significant differences between iron deficiency anemia and control groups (P > .05). Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities significantly increased after treatment with vitamin B(12) in vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia; however, there were no significant changes in the activities of these enzymes after iron treatment in iron deficiency anemia group. Important correlations were found between vitamin B(12) levels and both paraoxonase and arylesterase activities (r = .367, P < .001; r = .445, P < .001). Our results suggest that vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia causes important reductions in paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and after vitamin B(12) therapy the activities of these enzymes returned to near-normal levels. 相似文献

Bone tissue engineering has the potential to provide us with an autologous bone substitute. Despite extensive research to optimize the technique, little is known about the survival and function of the cells after implantation. To monitor the cells, in vivo labeling is the method of choice. In this study we investigated the use of the fluorescent membrane marker chloromethyl-benzamidodialkylcarbocyanine (CM-Dil) to label cells used in bone tissue engineering. When applying label concentrations up to 50 microM, cells could be labeled efficiently without negative effects on cell vitality, proliferation, or bone-forming capacity. Porous hydroxyapatite scaffolds were seeded with labeled cells, and up to 6 weeks after implantation in nude mice cells could be traced inside tissue-engineered bone. However, contrary to other reports concerning intramembranous labels, transfer of the label from labeled to unlabeled cells was detected. Transfer occurred both in vitro and in vivo between vital cells and between dead and living cells. To determine when in vivo label transfer happened, devitalized, labeled constructs were implanted for various time periods in nude mice. The presence of vital labeled cells inside these constructs, when evaluated at different implantation periods, indicated transfer of the label. Transfer occurred at 7 days postimplantation when 40 microM label was applied, whereas 10 microM labeled constructs showed transfer 10 days after implantation. These findings indicate that CM-Dil label is useful for in vivo tracing of cells for follow-up periods up to 10 days. The genetic basis of non-syndromic autosomal recessive forms of amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is unknown. To evaluate five candidate genes for an aetiological role in AI. In this study 20 consanguineous families with AI were identified in whom probands suggested autosomal recessive transmission. Family members were genotyped for genetic markers spanning five candidate genes: AMBN and ENAM (4q13.3), TUFT1 (1q21), MMP20 (11q22.3-q23), and KLK4 (19q13). Genotype data were evaluated to identify homozygosity in affected individuals. Mutational analysis was by genomic sequencing. Homozygosity linkage studies were consistent for localisation of an AI locus in three families to the chromosome 4q region containing the ENAM gene. ENAM sequence analysis in families identified a 2 bp insertion mutation that introduced a premature stop codon in exon 10. All three probands were homozygous for the same g.13185_13186insAG mutation. These probands presented with a generalised hypoplastic AI phenotype and a class II openbite malocclusion. All heterozygous carriers of the g.13185_13186insAG mutation had localised hypoplastic enamel pitting defects, but none had AI or openbite. The phenotype associated with the g.13185_13186insAG ENAM mutation is dose dependent such that ARAI with openbite malocclusion segregates as a recessive trait, and enamel pitting as a dominant trait. 相似文献

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a serious and potentially lethal complication of ovulation induction. We report herein a case with OHSS treated by serial vaginal paracentesis. A 31-year-old patient was hospitalized due to severe OHSS after in vitro fertilization (IVF)–embryo transfer. Transvaginal drainage was performed with a standard 17-gauge IVF needle connected to a vacuum pump through a drainage set in nine courses. We removed 45 liters of ascitic fluid in total and 7.5 liters of ascitic fluid in one course, leading to improvement of the patient's condition and laboratory parameters. In conclusion, removal of ascites up to 7.5 liters on one occasion and 45 liters in total by serial vaginal paracentesis may be performed in patients with severe OHSS. 相似文献
