Lysosomes of rat liver and dab carcinogenesis

The relationship between DAB carcinogenesis and changes of lysosomes in rat liver was investigated. After 40 days of treatment with DAB, nodules and an abnormal cell population, containing small, large and degenerative cells, appeared. Corresponding to these changes, the S/P ratio of lysosomal enzymes such as acid RNase and β-glucuronidase increased to two or three times the normal value. These alterations were considered along with some histochemical observations on β-glucuronidase. A possible participation of these lysosomal enzymes in carcinogenesis is discussed.     

Three cases of malakoplakia of prostate

Three cases that were confirmed as malakoplakia of the prostate by means of prostatic biopsy are reported here. All of the patients had a previous history of urinary tract infection with Escherichia coli. These are cases that had not been found in the literature in Japan, and they are deemed the eighth, ninth, and tenth cases of prostatic malakoplakia reported in the world literature.     

Mechanisms of increase in amylase activity in rat submandibular and sublingual glands after administration of pilocarpine

The increase in parotid rather than pancreatic-type amylase activity in the submandibular and sublingual glands of rats caused by administration of pilocarpine was abolished or diminished when pilocarpine was injected into rats which had been parotidectomized, sympathectomized by superior cervical ganglionectomy or pretreated with reserpine. These results suggest that the increases in amylase activity in the submandibular and sublingual glands by pilocarpine are not due to increase in enzyme synthesis, but to uptake of enzyme released into the blood in large quantities from the parotid gland and that the release from the parotid gland by pilocarpine is primarily mediated by sympathetic nerves.     

Infolded plasma membranes of keratinized cells

Summary Within the keratinized cells from five different sources, the trilaminar plasma membranes were commonly found. They have derived from the invaginated plasma membrane formed when the membrane-coating granules were discharged, or from infolded plasma membrane due to cellular dehydration and shrinkage. The marginal band was not formed upon these intracellular plasma membranes.

Zusammenfassung Innerhalb der verhornten Zellen, die von 5 verschiedenen Quellen stammten, wurden häufig Inseln mit dreifach geschichteten Zellmembranen gefunden. Sie entstanden aus Falten der Protoplasmamembran, nachdem die der Membran anliegenden Körnchen abgestoßen worden waren, oder aus Falten der Protoplasmamembran infolge von Zelltrocknung und Schrumpfung. Das verdickte Grenzband wurde nicht auf diesen intracellulären Inseln der Protoplasmamembran gebildet.
