Objective

Biofilm formation ability is one of the major virulence factors contributing to the pathogenesis of Candida species. Biofilms produced by Candida spp. cause complicated treatments and contribute to increasing unpleasant mortality rates. Nanoparticles of Fe3O4 (Fe3O4-NPs) are considered due to their magnetic and biochemical properties, as well as their low costs. The purpose of present study was to determine biofilm formation ability in different Candida strains and evaluation of anti-biofilm effect of Fe3O4-NPs compared with FLC.

Materials and methods

In this study, the biofilm-forming ability of Candida strains and the inhibitory effects of Fe3O4-NPs on Candida strains biofilms compared with FLC were measured by MTT assay.

Results

Our finding showed that the biofilm formation ability of C. lusitaniae was significantly higher than other tested Candida strains. However, all the studied Candida strains produced high degree of biofilms. The biofilm formation in different Candida strains was inhibited at concentrations ≥ 1000 μg/mL to ≥ 4000 μg/mL for Fe3O4-NPs and ≥ 512 μg/mL to ≥ 2048 μg/mL for FLC. After exposure to various concentrations of Fe3O4-NPs, biofilm formation reduction in C. albicans and C. parapsilosis were more than FLC. Although, this reduction was not significant. A significant reduction (P < 0.05) was observed in biofilm formation in presence of FLC compared with Fe3O4-NPs in C. krusei, C. tropicalis, and C. lusitaniae. The inhibitory effects of Fe3O4-NPs and FLC on biofilm formation of C. glabrata were approximately equal.

Conclusion

In accordance with the findings, the biofilm reduction effect of FLC for C. krusei, C. tropicalis, and C. lusitaniae were statistically higher than Fe3O4-NPs.  相似文献

Introduction: The treatment options for cancer—surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy—are now supplemented with immunotherapy. Previously underappreciated but now gaining strong interest are the immune modulatory properties of the three conventional modalities. Moreover, there is a better understanding of the needs and potential of the different immune therapeutic platforms. Key to improved treatment will be the combinations of modalities that complete each other’s shortcomings.

Area covered: Tumor-specific T-cells are required for optimal immunotherapy. In this review, the authors focus on the correct timing of different types of chemotherapeutic agents or immune modulators and immunotherapeutic drugs, not only for the activation and expansion of tumor-specific T-cells but also to support and enhance their anti-tumor efficacy.

Expert opinion: At an early phase of disease, clinical success can be obtained using single treatment modalities but at later disease stages, combinations of several modalities are required. The gain in success is determined by a thorough understanding of the direct and indirect immune effects of the modalities used. Profound knowledge of these effects requires optimal tuning of immunomonitoring. This will guide the appropriate combination of treatments and allow for correct sequencing the order and interval of the different therapeutic modalities.  相似文献

The Indian Armed Forces Medical Services has been engaged in providing medical to the soldiers serving on Siachen Glacier for the last 25 years. This paper attempts to highlight the medical problems faced by troops on the world's highest battlefield as perceived by a medical officer located on the forward most medical echelon on Siachen Glacier. The medical problems on the glacier include high altitude pulmonary oedema, acute mountain sickness, frost bite chilblains, hypothermia, snow blindness, injury non enemy action due to avalanches, crevasses and fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and problems in disposal of nightsoil. A large number of problems are taken care of by following a well documented acclimatisation drill. However under such conditions providing medical support is a difficult task and requires innovations and improvisations entailing a high degree of mental mobility on the part of medical commanders and the Regimental Medical Officers located on the forward posts.  相似文献

Abstract   We report a complex case of peripheral vascular disease (PVD), coronary artery disease (CAD), and three prosthetic heart valves, who developed severe mitral regurgitation (MR) due to healed endocarditis. She was successfully managed with a hybrid approach utilizing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) followed by minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS) through right minithoracotomy. This was the patient's fifth cardiac surgery and she was discharged home on the fourth postoperative day (POD) .  相似文献
