Background Perceived age is important to women and is a primary driver for topical product use and facial cosmetic surgery. Changes in facial features and biophysical skin parameters with chronological age and their associations with perceived age have not been described in Asian populations. Objective To investigate the relationship between biophysical properties of the skin, visual features of skin ageing and perceived facial age in Chinese women. Methods Facial photographs were collected of 250 Chinese women, aged 25–70 years in Shanghai, China. The perceived facial age was determined and related to the chronological age for each participant and to a range of visual assessments of skin appearance and objective biophysical measurements of the skin. The profile of changes in these parameters with age was investigated together with the differences in those parameters for women judged to look younger than their chronological age and those judged to look older than their chronological age. Results Large discrepancies in perceived age (up to 29 years) were found in women of the same chronological age. Each objective skin measure and visual assessment parameter had a stronger correlation with perceived age than with chronological age. The strongest relationships to perceived age were for wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Skin colour, hydration and trans‐epidermal water loss (TEWL) had weaker associations with perceived age. Women judged to look older than their chronological age had significantly higher scores than those judged to look younger for coarse wrinkles and hyperpigmentation across all age groups. The appearance differences between these groups were evident in composite facial images of the same average chronological age. Conclusions We have identified the skin attributes which differ with perceived age in Chinese women. Perceived age is a better measure of the biological age of facial skin than is chronological age in this population.  相似文献

Over the last 30 years there has been a considerable increase in the life expectancy of people with learning disabilities. This has resulted in changing patterns of morbidity and mortality and an increasing recognition of the health needs of people with learning disabilities. Major strides forward have been made in the reduction of preventable illnesses among the general population. However, among people with learning disabilities such illnesses have received only limited health promotion attention until recently. In the last decade major gaps have been identified in the ability of current primary health services to respond to the needs of people with learning disabilities. The need to respond effectively to this situation has been identified as a priority by the current United Kingdom Government. Following an overview of the literature in relation to the changing health profile of people with learning disabilities and the need for health screening, consideration is given to some of the key difficulties which may be encountered when attempting to utilize current primary health services. The analysis of data derived from the health screening of 373 people with learning disabilities by a community nursing service in Down and Lisburn Health and Social Services Trust reveals the need for further action in relation to cardiovascular status, sensory deficits, mobility and aspects of sexual health.  相似文献

Purpose: To evaluate the long‐term outcomes of removable partial dentures (RPDs) retained (but not supported) by dental implants. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 32 consecutive patients who received implant‐retained RPDs. Each patient received one to four endosseus implants; the sample included a total of 64 implants. Follow‐up was conducted for a minimum of 8 years, during which satisfaction, implant survival, and prosthetic success were evaluated. Results: Patient satisfaction systematically increased. The implant success rate was 93.75%, and 100% of the prostheses were successful. Conclusion: Implant‐retained RPDs are a reliable intermediate solution that can reduce biological and economic costs while maintaining implant treatment benefits and the ease of RPD procedures.  相似文献

Aims/hypothesis Hyperproinsulinaemia and relative hyperglucagonaemia are features of type 2 diabetes. We hypothesised that raised fasting glucagon and proinsulin concentrations may be associated with insulin resistance (IR) in non-diabetic individuals. Methods We measured IR [by a euglycaemic–hyperinsulinaemic (240 pmol min−1 m−2) clamp technique] in 1,296 non-diabetic (on a 75 g OGTT) individuals [716 women and 579 men, mean age 44 years, BMI 26 kg/m2 (range 18–44 kg/m2)] recruited at 19 centres in 14 European countries. IR was related to fasting proinsulin or pancreatic glucagon concentrations in univariate and multivariate analyses. Given its known relationship to IR, serum adiponectin was used as a positive control. Results In either sex, both glucagon and proinsulin were directly related to IR, while adiponectin was negatively associated with it (all p < 0.0001). In multivariate models, controlling for known determinants of insulin sensitivity (i.e. sex, age, BMI and glucose tolerance) as well as factors potentially affecting glucagon and proinsulin (i.e. fasting plasma glucose and C-peptide concentrations), glucagon and proinsulin were still positively associated, and adiponectin was negatively associated, with IR. Finally, when these associations were tested as the probability that individuals in the top IR quartile would have hormone levels in the top quartile of their distribution independently of covariates, the odds ratio was ∼2 for both glucagon (p = 0.05) and proinsulin (p = 0.02) and 0.36 for adiponectin (p < 0.0001). Conclusions/interpretation Whole-body IR is independently associated with raised fasting plasma glucagon and proinsulin concentrations, possibly as a result of IR at the level of alpha cells and beta cells in pancreatic islets. Impaired glucose homeostasis, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high blood pressure, and central obesity tend to cluster in patients to generate a syndrome, the metabolic syndrome. In the adult population, the metabolic syndrome prevalence ranges between 15% and 25%. Poor fibrinolysis and low-grade inflammation also are associated with the metabolic syndrome,and they contribute to make it a condition that predisposes to cardiovascular disease. Insulin resistance and attendant hyperinsulinemia are the characteristic features of the metabolic syndrome and probably are responsible for impairment in glucose homeostasis,dyslipidemia, and higher blood pressure through cause-and-effect relationships. While awaiting the results of clinical trials with cardiovascular endpoints, we should treat the metabolic syndrome with aggressive lifestyle intervention and consider drugs that improve the whole cardiovascular risk profile.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: LDL-cholesterol particles from hypertensive patients exhibit enhanced susceptibility to in vitro oxidation, an abnormality thought to increase cardiovascular risk. We tested whether blood pressure (BP) normalization can reverse this abnormality. DESIGN: Double-blind, randomized pharmacological intervention trial. SETTING: Clinical research centre. Subjects. A total of 29 nondiabetic, normolipidaemic patients with essential hypertension (BP= 151 +/- 3/99 +/- 1 mmHg) and 11 normotensive controls (BP=125 +/- 3/85 +/- 1 mmHg) matched for gender, age, obesity, glucose tolerance and lipid profile. Intervention. Anti-hypertensive treatment for 3 months with a calcium-antagonist in randomized combination with either an ACE inhibitor or a beta-blocker. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Lag phase of copper-induced LDL oxidation, cell-mediated (human umbilical vein endothelium) generation of malondialdehyde (MDA) by LDL and vitamin E content in LDL. RESULTS: At baseline in hypertensives versus controls, lag phase was shorter (89 +/- 3 vs. 107 +/- 6 min, P < 0.04), MDA generation was higher (5.8 +/- 0.1 vs. 5.1 +/- 0.2 nmol L(-1), P=0.002), and vitamin E was reduced (6.40 +/- 0.05 vs. 6.67 +/- 0.11 microg mg(-1), P=0.03). At 3 months, BP was normalized (124 +/- 3/81 +/- 1, P < 0.0001 vs. baseline, P=ns versus controls), lag phase was prolonged (to 98 +/- 3 min, P=0.0005), MDA generation was reduced (5.6 +/- 0.1 nmol L-1, P = 0.001), and vitamin E was increased (6.53 +/- 0.05 microg mg(-1), P=0.003), with no significant differences between the randomized groups. CONCLUSIONS: In nondiabetic, nonobese, normolipidaemic patients with essential hypertension, LDL susceptibility to copper- and cell-mediated oxidation is increased. BP normalization is associated with a significant improvement, but not a full reversal, of this abnormality.  相似文献
