A rare case of an alveolar soft part sarcoma of the uterine cervix in an 8 year old girl is presented. The patient was admitted because of genital bleeding lasting for 7 months. A polypoid tumor, 2times1.5 cm in diameter, was found in her external uterine os and was surgically resected. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of a uniform sheet of tumor cells in the cytoplasm which contained granules and which were stained with periodic acid-Schiff, both before and after the diastase digestion. Alveolar arrangement of the tumor cells was manifested with reticulin silver impregnation. Dense, membrane bound granules were evident at an ultrastructural level in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. An immunohistochemical examination demonstrated a positive reaction for anti-desmin, anti-myoglobin, anti-HHF35 and anti-neuron specific enolase in the cytoplasm.  相似文献

Summary In a series of 79 cases of primary esophageal carcinoma resected at The Center for Adult Diseases, Osaka, there were six tumors with specific histopathologic features valid for the diagnosis of argyrophil cell carcinoma. Of the 6 tumors, 3 were studied electron microscopically and assay for ACTH content was performed on 4 tumors.Clinically, the ages of the 6 patients ranged from 56 to 71 years; two were women and four men. Four of the 6 patients died with widespread tumor recurrences within 9 months of operation.Microscopically, the 6 tumors were composed largely or almost entirely of small, spindle-shaped cells resembling those of oat cell carcinoma of the lung, and were characterized by the arrangement of tumor cells in solid sheets or anastomosing cords, the presence of argyrophil tumor cells, and the deposits of amyloid. Electron microscopically, the three tumors contained neurosecretory-type granules. Using bioassay or radioimmunoassay ACTH activity in the tumor tissues was detected in 3 out of the 4 tumors determined.From the light and electron microscopic characteristics and the assay evidence, it seems reasonable to conclude that the 6 tumors are endocrine polypeptide producing tumors (apudomas) that arise from argyrophil cells normally found among the basal cells of the esophageal mucosa, and that they represent a distinct histopathologic entity clearly distinguishable from other types of esophageal carcinomas.Supported in part by a Grant-in Aid for Cancer Research from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, JapanThe authors are grateful to Prof. H. The etiological agents of diarrhea in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), were studied in the period from October 1996 to August 1997. A total of 880 patients with diarrhea visiting medical facilities were examined for Shigella, Salmonella, diarrheagenic Escherichia coli, Vibrio, Aeromonas, Campylobacter, and rotavirus. Shigella spp., heat-stable enterotoxin (ST)-producing E. coli, and serogroup-based enteropathogenic E. coli were found to be the main organisms causing diarrhea in Vientiane, with frequencies of 16.8% (148 of 880), 17.2% (111 of 645), and 11.0% (97 of 880), respectively. Relatively low incidences were observed in the cases of Salmonella spp., (0.6%; 5 of 880), Campylobacter spp. (4.4%; 39 of 880), and rotavirus (6.1%; 9 of 148), and no isolates of V. cholerae O1 or O139 or Aeromonas were recovered. An analysis of the incidences of enteropathogens with respect to age and seasonal variations demonstrated that the frequencies of isolation of Shigella spp. and heat-labile enterotoxin-producing E. coli were significantly higher in those aged 1 to 5 years than in those younger than 1 year of age and those older than 5 years of age (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.05, respectively) and that the frequencies of isolation of Shigella spp. and ST-producing E. coli were significantly higher in the rainy season than in the dry season (P < 0.005 and P < 0.001, respectively). Almost all strains of Shigella spp. tested were resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, and erythromycin and were susceptible to cefdinir and ofloxacin. This is the first intensive and longitudinal study to define the etiologic agents of diarrheal diseases in Lao PDR.  相似文献

An autopsy case of bronchiolo-alveolar adenocarcinoma in the lung is reported. The patient is a 70-year-old male who complained of severe cough with 500–600 ml watery sputum a day, loss of weight, and general fatigue. Autopsy revealed numerous whitish tumors in various sizes with multiple cysts in both lungs, with no metastasis being found in any other organs. Histological findings identified the tumor as a bronchiolo-alveolar adenocarcinoma originating from the lungs. Electron-microscopic findings showed that the tumor cells were covered by prominent microvilli, and contained abundant irregulary-shaped cytoplasmic vacuoles suggestive of mucin.  相似文献

Kidney-derived aspartic protease-like protein (KAP), initially identified in the mouse kidney, is a novel aspartic protease exclusively expressed in the lung and spleen as well as the kidney. Its orthologues have been identified in the human and rat, and termed napsin. We performed in situ hybridization analysis to determine the cellular expression of napsin mRNA in the kidney, lung, and lymphatic organs of adult mice and to demonstrate, for the first time, its expression patterns in ontogeny. In the adult mouse kidney, extremely intense signals for napsin mRNA were observed in the proximal straight and convoluted tubules, in agreement with a previous study. The first signals for napsin mRNA during nephrogenesis occurred selectively in mesonephric tubules at embryonic day 13, and in metanephric tubules from embryonic day 14. In the lung, a distribution restricted to type II alveolar cells or their precursors was found from embryonic day 15, at the onset of type II cell differentiation, to the adult stage. In the spleen, the mRNA was expressed in lymph nodules of the white pulp and the marginal zone-namely, B-lymphocyte-rich regions from postnatal day 0 to adult. The lymph node and Peyer's patch displayed similar expression patterns, but T cell-dependent areas in these organs and the thymus lacked such signals. These findings suggest that mouse napsin possesses crucial functional roles not only in the kidney but also in the lung and lymphatic tissues, even during fetal stages.  相似文献

A cement powder consisting of sodium calcium phosphate, Na3Ca6(PO4)5, in addition to tetracalcium phosphate and beta-tricalcium phosphate was prepared by pulverizing blocks of 4 wt% sodium-, 11 wt% carbonate-containing apatite samples that were heated at 1700 degrees C for 5 h. When mixed with 30 wt% malic acid or citric acid at a powder liquid ratio of 3:1, the cement set in 3 or 7 min at room temperature with compressive strength being around 52 or 27 MPa. In HeLa-cell cultures, the cement mixed with malic acid was less cytotoxic than the cement mixed with citric acid, which was far less cytotoxic than a commercial carboxylate cement used as a negative control, suggesting malic acid to be superior to citric acid as a liquid in this regard. Similar findings were also obtained with osteoclasts, of which culture experiments clearly suggested that the number of osteoclasts on the cement mixed with malic acid was significantly greater than that on the cement mixed with citric acid. Since osteoclastic response to substrates could be used as a maker in evaluating their bioresorbability associated with osteoclasts, the above finding may suggest that the cement that is to be mixed with malic acid would be more useful as bone substitutes.  相似文献

Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) has been proposed as a novel regulatory peptide in the reproductive tract. We previously demonstrated that GRP immunoreactivities are found predominantly in the uterine gland epithelial cells of nonpregnant and pregnant cows. The present study focused on the distribution of GRP immunoreactivity and the expression of GRP mRNA in the bovine endometrium during the estrous cycle. Tissues were collected from 21 uterine horns and bodies during the estrous cycle. RT-PCR showed the expected GRP mRNA fragments (284 bp) in the tissues from all stages of the cycle. In situ hybridization results ascertained the expression of the GRP mRNA in the uterine gland epithelial cells and superficial epithelial cells of the endometrium. Positive staining of GRP immunoreactivity in the uterine gland epithelial cells was detected in both the uterine horn and body from all stages of the cycle. In metestrus and diestrus stages, GRP was also detected in the superficial epithelial cells of horn, but not in the body. The degrees of GRP mRNA expression and intensities of GRP immunoreactivity in the endometrium increased from proestrus to diestrus stages. These findings suggest that GRP may be important both in the endometrial remodeling during the estrous cycle and in the implantation and development of blastocysts.  相似文献

Strains of Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 biotype El Tor that are susceptible to Mukerjee cholera bacteriophage group IV (S. Mukerjee, Bull. W.H.O. 28:333-336, 1963) were found. Cholera vibrios isolated from epidemics in northeast Thailand were characterized, and 57 of 60 strains isolated in 1986 were susceptible to cholera phage IV. However, all 113 strains isolated in 1988 were not susceptible to the phage. All isolates in both epidemics revealed behaviors typical of El Tor vibrios, except phage IV susceptibility in the 57 strains. Although the plaques of phage IV were generally translucent, plaques on some isolates looked transparent, just like those on classical vibrios. The organisms grown in the plaques were lysogenized. If this kind of strain is frequently isolated, the biotype of V. cholerae O1 should be reconsidered.  相似文献

Summary We describe a breast cancer with ectopic production of amylase, found in the patient's serum, urine and in the tumour. Clinically, serum amylase levels reflected both the progression of the disease and regression induced by various therapies. Using agarose gel electrophoresis and a wheat protein inhibitor assay, the predominant serum amylase appeared to be identical to pancreatic-type isoenzyme. However, the action mode analysis using a new fluorogenic substrate revealed that the serum contained non-salivary, non-pancreatic amylase. The tumour had microscopic features of invasive ductal carcinoma with some argyrophilic differentiation. The component cells stained positively for amylase, and ultrastructurally numerous secretory granules were seen.  相似文献

We have established a set of transgenic mouse lines in which the HLA-DRA gene was expressed in different cell types. In one line (DRα-24), DRαEβb molecules were expressed on thymic medullary and cortical epithelial cells and all lineages of bone marrow-derived antigen-presenting cells (APC) except for thymic macrophages. By contrast, expression of the molecules in another line (DRα-30) was found on thymic medullary and cortical epithelial cells but not on bone marrow-derived APC in the thymus and periphery. To evaluate the role of thymic epithelial cells in acquisition of T cell tolerance, comparative analysis of DRα-24 and DRα-30 was performed. In DRα-30, T cells expressing TcR Vβ5 and Vβ11 were eliminated to comparable levels to those in DRα-24, suggesting that expression of the DRαEβb molecules on thymic epithelial cells are sufficient for clonal deletion of the self-superantigen-reactive T cells. In addition, CD4+ T cells from DRa-30 as well as those from DRα-24 were tolerant to DRα-derived peptide/I-Ab complex expressed on spleen cells from DRα-24 even in the presence of exogenous interleukin-2. These observations suggest that expression of the DRα chain in thymic epithelial cells could induce T cell tolerance directed toward naturally processed DRα-derived peptide bound to I-Ab molecules, probably via clonal deletion of the self-reactive T cells.  相似文献
