The balance of radiant and air temperature for warmth in older women

Fifty-six women over 55 years of age (mean age 67.5 yr, standard deviation 6.4 yr) experienced three environmental conditions of equal predicted subjective warmth, but different mean radiant and air temperatures (air temperature 26.9°C, mean radiant temperature 17.3°C; air temperature 23.0°C, mean radiant temperature 23.7°C; air temperature 19.2°C, mean radiant temperature 26.8°C). After 40 minutes exposure subjects rated the environment on a number of subjective scales. There were no significant differences between conditions. This supports a previous finding, with young men as subjects, that radiant and warm-air environments are not perceived differentially and also suggests that the relative importance of air and mean radiant temperature for warmth is not affected by age.     

Chromosome changes in a patient achieving complete remission in the acute phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia.

A patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) had a Philadelphia chromosome (Ph′) [t(9q+;22q–)] in all cells and trisomy C in 13% of cells (later determined to be trisomy 8) at the time of diagnosis. After 21 months of intermittent treatment with busulfan, the acute phase developed with the appearance of an additional abnormality (trisomy ?19). During a complete remission and reconversion to the chronic phase, trisomies 8 and ?19 disappeared, although the Ph′ remained. Following a period of marked thrombocytosis, a second relapse occurred with the reappearance of both marker chromosomes.     

Plasma lipids and lipoproteins in liver disease.

There are many changes in the plasma, lipids, and lipoproteins in patients with liver disease. They have proved difficult to study but our understanding of these changes has increased greatly during recent years. In obstructive jaundice hyperlipidaemia is a fairly constant finding and this appears to be due to the regurgitation of phospholipid from the obstructed biliary tree. The plasma lipids tend to fall with parenchymal liver disease. The composition of the lipoproteins depends on the activity of the plasma enzyme lecithin: cholesterol acyl transferase. When LCAT activity is high the individual lipoprotein fractions are normal. When it is reduced all of the lipoprotein fractions are affected but the pattern found with obstruction is quite different from that found with parenchymal disease. The changes in plasma lipoproteins appear to be associated with change in the lipid composition of cellular membranes and this may have important functional implications.     

Epstein-Barr virus in an American patient with Burkitt's lymphoma: detection of viral genome in tumor tissue and establishment of a tumor-derived cell line (NAB).

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA (17.7 genome equivalents/cell) was found in tumor tissue from an American patient with Burkitt's lymphoma who had never traveled outside the United States. A lymphoid cell line (NAB) containing the EBV genome was established from tumor tissue from this patient; characteristics of this cell line were described. Previous Burkitt's tumors found in Americans and examined by molecular hybridization were negative for EBV DNA. Our results suggested that EBV is associated with at least some American Burkitt's tumors.
