Cones in the Euclidean space with vanishing scalar curvature

Given a hypersurface M on a unit sphere of the Euclidean space, we define the cone based on M as the set of half-lines issuing from the origin and passing through M. By assuming that the scalar curvature of the cone vanishes, we obtain conditions under which bounded domains of such cone are stable or unstable.     

Relationship between increased longevity and stress resistance as assessed through gerontogene mutations in Caenorhabditis elegans

We review the status of the hypothesis that interventions that increase the resistance to stress offer the potential for effective life prolongation and increased health. The work focuses on research in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans and describes both published and unpublished results consistent with this hypothesis. Correlations between stress resistance and longevity among many gerontogene mutants is provided.     

Mannose binding lectin and C3 act as recognition molecules for infectious agents in the vagina

In our study we examined the early complement components in patients with bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) and in healthy controls. The levels of C1q, mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and C3 were measured by ELISA in the cervicovaginal lavage (CVL) from gynaecological patients and controls. No significant differences were observed in the levels of these proteins in the three study groups. Immunofluorescence analysis of the clue cells and Candida hyphae from BV and VVC patients for surface-bound complement components showed the presence of C3, while C1q was undetectable. MBL was revealed on clue cells but not on Candida. Binding of MBL to Candida, grown or cytocentrifuged from the CVL of VVC patients, was found to be pH dependent and occurred between pH 4.5 and pH 5.5. In conclusion, we demonstrated that MBL and C3 present in the vaginal cavity act as recognition molecules for infectious agents that colonize the cervicovaginal mucosa. Our finding that MBL, but not C1q, binds to bacteria and fungi in vagina suggests that the lectin and classical pathways of complement activation may play a different role in immune defence in the female genital tract.

Nitroprusside, but not ANF inhibits venoconstriction in an in situ rat model

Potential venodilator actions of nitroprusside (10 and 50 micrograms/min) and ANF (23 amino acid rat sequence, 10 and 30 micrograms/min) were assessed in rats subjected to cardiopulmonary bypass. Norepinephrine (NE, 10 micrograms) caused arterial pressor, i.e. increased perfusion pressure and venoconstrictor, i.e. increased venous flow, effects. ANF infusion failed to alter NE-induced pressor and venoconstrictor effects while nitroprusside significantly inhibited NE responses. Thus nitroprusside but not ANF, shows venodilator properties in this in situ rat model.
