The World Health Organization declared COVID-19, the infectious disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, a pandemic on March 12, 2020. COVID-19 is causing massive health problems and economic suffering around the world. The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) promptly recognised the impact that the outbreak could have on people with obesity. On one side, emerging data suggest that obesity represents a risk factor for a more serious and complicated course of COVID-19 in adults. On the other side, the health emergency caused by the outbreak diverts attention from the prevention and care of non-communicable chronic diseases to communicable diseases. This might be particularly true for obesity, a chronic and relapsing disease frequently neglected and linked to significant bias and stigmatization. The Obesity Management Task Force (OMTF) of EASO contributes in this paper to highlighting the key aspects of these two sides of the coin and suggests some specific actions.  相似文献

BackgroundStigmatization of persons living with obesity is an important public health issue. In 2015, Obesity Canada adopted person-first language in all internal documentation produced by the organization, and, from 2017, required all authors to use person-first language in abstract submissions to Obesity Canada hosted conferences. The impact of this intentional shift in strategic focus is not known. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a content analysis of proceedings at conferences hosted by Obesity Canada to identify whether or how constructs related to weight bias and obesity stigma have changed over time.MethodsOf 1790 abstracts accepted to conferences between 2008–2019, we excluded 353 abstracts that featured animal or cellular models, leaving 1437 abstracts that were reviewed for the presence of five constructs of interest and if they changed over time: 1) use of person-first versus use of disease-first terminology, 2) incorporation of lived experience of obesity, 3) weight bias and stigma, 4) aggressive or alarmist framing and 5) obesity framed as a modifiable risk factor versus as a disease. We calculated and analyzed through linear regression: 1) the overall frequency of use of each construct over time as a proportion of the total number of abstracts reviewed, and 2) the ratio of abstracts where the construct appeared at least once based on the total number of abstracts.ResultsWe found a significant positive correlation between use of person-first language in abstracts and time (R2 = 0.51, p < 0.01 for frequency, R2 = 0.65, p < 0.05 for ratio) and a corresponding negative correlation for the use of disease-first terminology (R2 = 0.48, p = 0.01 for frequency, R2 = 0.75, p < 0.001 for ratio). There was a significant positive correlation between mentions of weight bias and time (R2 = 0.53 and 0.57, p < 0.01 for frequency and ratio respectively).ConclusionUse of person-first language and attention to weight bias increased, while disease-first terminology decreased in accepted abstracts over the past 11 years since Obesity Canada began hosting conferences and particularly since more explicit actions for expectations to use person-first language were put in place in 2015 and 2017.  相似文献

The aim was to review the existing reports on cognitive and behavioural symptoms in monogenic forms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and to identify recurring patterns of clinical manifestations in those with specific mutations. A systematic literature search was conducted to retrieve observational studies of monogenic PD. Data pertaining to cognitive and psychiatric manifestations were extracted using standardized templates. The PRISMA guidelines were followed. Of the 1889 citations retrieved, 95 studies on PD‐related gene mutations were included: 35 in SNCA, 35 in LRRK2, four in VPS35, 10 in Parkin, three in DJ1 and eight in PINK1. Nineteen studies (20%) provided adequate data from comprehensive cognitive assessment and 31 studies (32.6%) outlined psychiatric manifestations through the use of neuropsychiatric scales. Cognitive impairment was reported in all monogenic PD forms with variable rates (58.8% PINK1, 53.9% SNCA, 50% DJ1, 29.2% VPS35, 15.7% LRRK2 and 7.4% Parkin). In this regard, executive functions and attention were the domains most affected. With respect to psychiatric symptoms, depression was the most frequent symptom, occurring in 37.5% of PINK1 cases and 41.7% of VPS35 and LRRK2 cases. Co‐occurrence of cognitive decline with visual hallucinations was evidenced. Widespread accumulation of Lewy bodies, distinctive of SNCA, PINK1 and DJ1 mutations, results in higher rates of cognitive impairment. Similarly, a higher degree of visual hallucinations is observed in SNCA mutations, probably owing to the more widespread accumulation. The lower rates of α‐synuclein pathology in LRRK2 and Parkin may underpin the more benign disease course in these patients.  相似文献

The present study aimed to determine the presence of the aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in breast milk samples from 123 nursing women and the degree of exposure of infants to this toxin, in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon state (northeast Mexico). Upon analysis, 100% of the samples were found to be contaminated with the toxin at an average concentration of 17.04 ng/L, with a range of 5.00 to 66.23 ng/L. A total of 13.01% of the breast milk samples exceeded the regulatory limit of 25 ng/L for AFM1 concentration, set by the European Union. The estimated daily intake for AFM1 and the carcinogenic risk index were also determined in the 0- to 6-, 7- to 12-, 13- to 24-, and 25- to 36-month-old age groups. The AFM1 intake through breast milk ranged from 1.09 to 20.17 ng/kg weight/day, and was higher than the tolerable daily intake, indicating a carcinogenic risk for infants in the age groups of 0- to 24-months old. This evidence demonstrates a susceptibility of breast milk to AFM1 contamination that may suggest a carcinogenic risk for the breastfed infants in Monterrey city, Nuevo Leon state, and the need to control the presence of aflatoxins in foods eaten by nursing mothers.  相似文献

Veillonella species is a gram-negative coccus which is part of the anaerobic normal flora in the oral cavity, small intestine, upper respiratory tract, vagina, and urinary tract. The role that this organism plays in infection is not well known, and it is generally associated with other bacteria. We present a case of bilateral abscessed orchiepididymitis associated with septicemia due to Veillonella parvula and, later, to Clostridium perfringens, with the development of severe renal insufficiency and septic shock, which resolved favorably with antibiotic therapy, treatment of shock, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In reviewing the literature, we have not found any other case of sepsis due to Veillonella sp. associated with urological disorders.  相似文献

Ischemic hypoxia provokes alterations in the production system of nitric oxide in the cerebellum. We hypothesize that the nitric oxide system may undergo modifications due to hypobaric hypoxia and that may play a role in high altitude pathophysiology. Therefore, changes in the nitric oxide system of the cerebellum of rats submitted to acute hypobaric hypoxia were investigated. Adult rats were exposed for 7 h to a simulated altitude of 8235 m (27000 ft.) and then killed after 0 h or 1, 3, 5 and 10 days of reoxygenation. Nitric oxide synthase calcium-dependent and -independent activity, immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry of neuronal, endothelial, and inducible nitric oxide synthase, and nitrotyrosine were evaluated. Immunoreactivity for neuronal nitric oxide synthase slightly increased in the baskets of the Purkinje cell layer and in the granule cells, after 0 h of reoxygenation, although no changes in neuronal nitric oxide synthase immunoblotting densitometry were detected. Calcium-dependent activity significantly rose after 0 h of reoxygenation, reaching control levels in the following points, and being coincident with a peak of eNOS expression. Nitrotyrosine formation showed significant increments after 0 h and 1 day of reoxygenation. Nitrotyrosine immunoreactivity showed an intracellular location change in the neurons of the cerebellar nuclei and in addition, an appearance of nitration in the soma of the Purkinje cells was detected. No changes in inducible nitric oxide synthase activity, immunoblotting or immunohistochemistry were detected. We conclude that at least part of the nitric oxide system is involved in cerebellum responses to hypobaric hypoxia.  相似文献
