The aim of this work was to study the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and current asthma in a group of Spanish schoolchildren. A total of 78 Spanish schoolchildren (26 asthmatic and 52 healthy controls) were randomly selected from a cohort of 564 children (9–12 years of age). The weight and height of all subjects were recorded. A questionnaire, completed by the subjects' parents, was used to obtain personal and health information. Current asthma was established when children had ever had asthma, they had been diagnosed with asthma by a physician, and they had been treated with medications at some time in the previous 12 months. Food intake was monitored using a 3-day food record. All consumed foods were converted into energy and nutrients. Dietary TAC was evaluated using the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), radical-trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP), and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assays. The TAC measured using all the assays was significantly lower in children with asthma than in children without this condition (2.95 (2.10–3.75)?mmol Fe(II)/day vs. 3.70 (3.08–4.49)?mmol Fe(II)/day, p?<?0.01; 1.50 (1.06–2.05)?mmol Trolox equivalents/day vs. 2.10 (1.40–2.65)?mmol Trolox equivalents/day, p?<?0.05; and 1.60 (1.08–2.00)?mmol Trolox equivalents/day vs. 1.85 (1.50–2.68)?mmol Trolox equivalents/day, p?<?0.05 for FRAP, TEAC, and TRAP, respectively). After adjusting for energy intake, children with FRAP values higher than 3.5 mmol Fe(II)/day (p50) and TEAC values higher than 1.9 mmol Trolox equivalents/day (p50) had 22.6 and 35.0 %, respectively, lower likelihood of suffering asthma episodes than children with lower values. When logistic regression analysis was performed separately for children with nonsmoker and smoker (at least one) parents, the association between dietary TAC and asthma was only observed in the nonsmoker group (OR?=?0.257, 95 % CI?=?0.107–0.618, p?=?0.002 for FRAP; OR?=?0.212, 95 % CI?=?0.069–0.639, p?=?0.006 for TEAC; and OR?=?0.264, 95 % CI?=?0.091–0.769, p?=?0.015 for TRAP assay). Conclusion: Dietary TAC may have a favorable role in asthma in children and, specially, in those with nonsmoker parents.  相似文献

Extracts (aqueous, methanol and dichloromethane) from Ambrosia tenuifolia, Aristolochia triangularis, Baccharis tucumanensis, Campyloneuron phyllitidis and Eupatorium christieanum were screened for antiinflammatory activity. On the croton oil induced mouse ear oedema test, the highest activities were exhibited by dichloromethane extracts assayed, especially those of Baccharis tucumanensis and Campyloneuron phyllitidis. On the carrageenan mouse paw oedema test, Baccharis tucumanensis and Campyloneuron phyllitidis showed the highest activity.  相似文献

To determine if anemia can be predicted on enhanced computed tomography (CT) examinations of the thorax using virtual non-contrast (VNC) images, in order to support clinicians especially in diagnosing primary asymptomatic patients in daily routine.In this monocentric study, 100 consecutive patients (50 with proven anemia), who underwent a contrast-enhanced CT examination of the thorax due to various indications were included. Attenuation was measured in the descending thoracic aorta, the intraventricular septum, and the left ventricle cavity both in the conventional contrast-enhanced and in the VNC images.Two experienced radiologists annotated the delineation of a dense interventricular septum or a hyperattenuating aortic wall sign for all patients.Hemoglobin levels were then correlated with the measured attenuation values, as well as the visualization of the aortic wall or interventricular septum.Good correlation was shown between hemoglobin levels and CT attenuation values of the left ventricular cavity (r = .59), aorta (r = .56), and ratio between left ventricular cavity and the intraventricular septum (r = .57). Receiver operating characteristic curve revealed ≤ 36.5 hounsfield units (left ventricular cavity) as the threshold for diagnosing anemia. Predicting anemia by visualization of a hyperattenuating aortic wall or a dense interventricular septum yielded a specificity of 98% and 92%, respectively.Predicting anemia on enhanced CT examinations using VNC is feasible. A threshold value of ≤ 36.5 hounsfield units (left ventricular cavity) best defines anemia. Aortic wall or interventricular septum visualization on VNC is a specific anemia indicator.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of irinotecan-eluting stents (IS) on neointimal growth in the aortas of hypercholesterolemic rabbits and to determine other local histopathological effects such as necrosis, fibrin, and inflammatory reaction. METHODS: Phosphorylcholine-coated stents were deployed in the aortas of hypercholesterolemic rabbits. Group 1 (control; n = 8) received unloaded stents, group 2 (n = 7) and group 3 (n = 9) received IS with 0.046 mg and 1.29 mg of irinotecan, respectively. Eight weeks after implantation the rabbits were killed. Neointimal thickness (NT) was assessed by morphometry. Semiquantitative injury score (from 0 to 3+) was used to analyze inflammatory infiltrate, fibrin deposits, and necrosis in the stented segments. RESULTS: NT was reduced only in high-doses IS (G1, 167.4 +/- 20.8 mu; G2, 170.24 +/- 21.2 mu; G3, 111.56 +/- 12.7 mu; P < 0.05, G3 vs G1 and G2). Necrosis decreased significantly with IS [1.00 +/- 0.10 in G1 to 0.33 +/- 0.07 and 0.02 +/- 0.01 in G2 and G3, respectively] only in the media layer. The inflammatory infiltrate was present in the three layers of aortas from G1, but only decreased significantly in the intimae layer of the high-dose group [1.50 +/- 0.15 in G1 vs 1.00 +/- 0.18 in G3, P < 0.05]. CONCLUSION: Stents loaded with high-dose irinotecan inhibit NT in the aortas of hypercholesterolemic rabbits. This effect was accompanied by decreased inflammatory infiltrate and media necrosis.  相似文献

Connectivity‐based parcellation (CBP) methods are used to define homogenous and biologically meaningful parcels or nodes—the foundations of brain network fingerprinting—by grouping voxels with similar patterns of brain connectivity. However, we still lack a gold standard method and the use of CBPs to study the aging brain remains scarce. Our study proposes a novel CBP method from diffusion MRI data and shows its potential to produce a more accurate characterization of the longitudinal alterations in brain network topology occurring in aging. For this, we constructed whole‐brain connectivity maps from diffusion MRI data of two datasets: an aging cohort evaluated at two timepoints (mean interval time: 52.8 ± 7.24 months) and a normative adult cohort—MGH‐HCP. State‐of‐the‐art clustering techniques were used to identify the best performing technique. Furthermore, we developed a new metric (connectivity homogeneity fingerprint [CHF]) to evaluate the success of the final CBP in improving regional/global structural connectivity homogeneity. Our results show that our method successfully generates highly homogeneous parcels, as described by the significantly larger CHF score of the resulting parcellation, when compared to the original. Additionally, we demonstrated that the developed parcellation provides a robust anatomical framework to assess longitudinal changes in the aging brain. Our results reveal that aging is characterized by a reorganization of the brain''s structural network involving the decrease of intra‐hemispheric, increase of inter‐hemispheric connectivity, and topological rearrangement. Overall, this study proposes a new methodology to perform accurate and robust evaluations of CBP of the human brain.  相似文献
