A prior ultrasound study indicated that images with low to moderate levels of JPEG and wavelet compression were acceptable for diagnostic purposes. The purpose of this study is to validate this prior finding using the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) baseline compression algorithm, at a compression ratio of approximately 10:1, on a sufficiently large number of grayscale and color ultrasound images to attain a statistically significant result. The practical goal of this study is to determine if it is feasible for radiologists to use irreversibly compressed images as an integral part of the day to day ultrasound practice (ie, perform primary diagnosis with, and store irreversibly compressed images in the ultrasound PACS archive). In this study, 5 Radiologists were asked to review 300 grayscale and color static ultrasound images selected from 4 major anatomic groups. Each image was compressed and decompressed using the JPEG baseline compression algorithm at a fixed quality factor resulting in an average compression ratio of approximately 9:1. The images were presented in pairs (original and compressed) in a blinded fashion on a PACS workstation in the ultrasound reading areas, and radiologists were asked to pick which image they preferred in terms of diagnostic utility and their degree of certainty (on a scale from 1 to 4). Of the 1499 total readings, 50.17% (95% confidence intervals at 47.6%, and 52.7%) indicated a preference for the original image in the pair, and 49.83% (95% confidence intervals at 47.3%, and 52.0%) indicated a preference for the compressed image. These findings led the authors to conclude that static color and gray-scale ultrasound images compressed with JPEG at approximately 9:1 are statistically indistinguishable from the originals for primary diagnostic purposes. Based on the authors laboratory experience with compression and the results of this and other prior studies, JPEG compression is now being applied to all ultrasound images in the authors' radiology practice before reading. No image quality-related issues have been encountered after 12 months of operation (approximately 48000 examinations).  相似文献

GUS expression was obtained in E. graminis f.sp. hordei cells after bombardment with the GUS gene under the control of the E. graminis f.sp. hordei -tubulin promoter. Summary Electrical stimulation of the optic tectum in many vertebrate species elicits eye, head or body orienting movements in the direction of the receptive field location recorded at the site of stimulation; in the barn owl, tectal stimulation produces short latency saccadic head movements (du Lac and Knudsen 1990). However, the barn owl, like other avians, lacks a direct projection from the tectum to the spinal cord, implying that less direct connections underlie tectally mediated head movements. In order to determine the pathways by which the tectum gains access to spinal cord circuitry, we searched for overlap regions between tectal efferent projections and the locations of cells afferent to the spinal cord. Tectal efferent pathways and terminal fields were revealed by anterograde labeling using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or tritiated amino acids injected into the optic tectum. Cells afferent to the spinal cord were identified by means of retrograde labeling using HRP, rhodamine, or rhodamine-coupled latex beads injected into the cervical spinal cord. A comparison of results from the anterograde and retrograde labeling experiments demonstrated several areas of overlap. All of the cell groups that both received heavy tectal input and contained a high proportion of cells projecting to the spinal cord were located in the medial half of the midbrain and rhombencephalic tegmentum, and included the red nucleus, the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, the medial reticular formation, the nucleus reticularis pontis gigantocellularis, and the nucleus reticularis pontis oralis. All of these cell groups receive their tectal input from the medial efferent pathway, one of three major output pathways from the tectum. The other two output pathways (the rostral and the caudal) project to regions containing no more than a few scattered cells that are afferent to the spinal cord. Based on these data and on the functions of homologous cell groups in other vertebrates, we hypothesize that the medial efferent pathway and its brainstem target nuclei are primarily responsible for tectally mediated orienting head movements in the barn owl.  相似文献

The use of immunological assays, ELISA and RIA, for the identification and quantification of thermogenin (the brown adipose tissue-specific, GDP-binding, 32 kDa uncoupling protein) raises doubts regarding the exclusive occurrence of thermogenin in brown adipose tissue. Weak reactions between mitochondria from rat liver, rat skeletal and heart muscle and hamster white adipose and thermogenin antibodies have been observed (Cannon et al., 1982; Lean et al., 1983; Hansen et al., 1984). In order to study whether these reactions were due to thermogenin in tissues other than brown adipose tissue (BAT) or due to non-specific binding of thermogenin antibodies, a protein from rat liver mitochondria and a protein from tubifex mitochondria were isolated by the same procedure as thermogenin. The 2 proteins had almost the same molecular weight as thermogenin and reacted with thermogenin antibodies in ELISA and dot-blotting, but did not bind GDP and had an amino acid composition different from that of thermogenin. It is concluded that the weak reactions seen between thermogenin antibodies and mitochondria from different tissues other than BAT are due to non-specific binding, and that antibody cross-reactivity alone is unsuitable for the identification of thermogenin.  相似文献

Metabolic effects of interleukin-6 in human splanchnic and adipose tissue   总被引:7,自引:4,他引:7  
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) was infused intravenously for 2.5 h in seven healthy human volunteers at a dose giving rise to a circulating IL-6 concentration of ≈35 ng l−1. The metabolic effects of this infusion were studied in subcutaneous adipose tissue on the anterior abdominal wall and in the splanchnic tissues by the Fick principle after catheterizations of an artery, a subcutaneous vein draining adipose tissue, and a hepatic vein, and measurements of regional adipose tissue and splanchnic blood flows. In control studies without IL-6 infusion subcutaneous adipose tissue metabolism was studied by the same technique in eight healthy subjects. The net release of glycerol and fatty acids from the subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue remained constant in the control experiment. IL-6 infusion gave rise to increase in net glycerol release in subcutaneous adipose tissue while the net release of fatty acids did not change significantly. In the splanchnic region IL-6 elicited a pronounced vasodilatation, and the uptake of fatty acids and the gluconeogenic precursors glycerol and lactate increased significantly. The splanchnic net output of glucose and triacylglycerol did not change during the IL-6 infusion. It is concluded that IL-6 elicits lipolytic effects in human adipose tissue in vivo , and that IL-6 also has effects on the splanchnic lipid and carbohydrate metabolism.  相似文献
