This study examined the effects of voluntary abdominal breathing (VAB) on the electroencephalogram (EEG) in 22 healthy subjects. VAB was characterized by prolonged rhythmic contraction of abdominal muscles for 20 min in an eyes-closed condition. The breathing rate was instructed to be very slow, i.e., 3-4 breaths/min (inspiratory time for 6-8s and expiratory time for 9-12s). A low-frequency alpha band appeared immediately after eye closing, but it later disappeared and was replaced by a new development of a high-frequency alpha band 4-5 min after the onset of VAB. The subjects had a feeling of vigor-activity with a tendency of reduced anxiety during and/or after VAB, as assessed by POMS and STAI questionnaire scores. On the other hand, during resting in the eye-closed condition, the disappearance of the low-frequency alpha band was replaced by the occurrence of a theta/delta band. The subjects became drowsy in this condition. We therefore conclude that the increase in high-frequency alpha activity is linked to the state of vigor-activity with a tendency of reduced anxiety. Since the urinary serotonergic level significantly increased after the VAB, we suggest that the serotonergic neurons within the brain may produce the changes in the EEG patterns.  相似文献

Summary We describe a breast cancer with ectopic production of amylase, found in the patient's serum, urine and in the tumour. Clinically, serum amylase levels reflected both the progression of the disease and regression induced by various therapies. Using agarose gel electrophoresis and a wheat protein inhibitor assay, the predominant serum amylase appeared to be identical to pancreatic-type isoenzyme. However, the action mode analysis using a new fluorogenic substrate revealed that the serum contained non-salivary, non-pancreatic amylase. The tumour had microscopic features of invasive ductal carcinoma with some argyrophilic differentiation. The component cells stained positively for amylase, and ultrastructurally numerous secretory granules were seen.  相似文献

 To clarify the events leading to the disruption of cell growth control that occurs during the development of pulmonary adenocarcinoma (AC), we used immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of G1 cycle regulators, cyclin D1, Rb protein (pRb), and p16 MTS1 protein and the tumour proliferation marker, Ki 67, both in AC of the lung and in its precursor lesion, atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH). The frequency of lesions with cyclin D1 overexpression was relatively high in AAH (47–89%), but was decreased in early AC (28%) and overt AC (35%). The loss of pRb expression was rare in both AAH (0–18%) and early AC (0%), and was infrequent even in overt AC (13%). The loss of p16 expression was also relatively infrequent in both the premalignant and the malignant lesions (11–25%). Our results suggest that overexpression of cyclin D1 is an early event and plays an important part in tumorigenesis in the case of lung AC. However, cyclin D1 overexpression is not required for the development and maintenance of a malignant phenotype. It is likely that some cyclin D1-independent pathways other than Rb and p16 abnormalities have an important role in the malignant transformation from AAH to early AC. The proliferative activity and ultrastructural characteristics of proliferating biliary epithelial cells were analysed immunohistocytochemically in 39 biopsied liver specimens from patients with acute viral hepatitis, chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis using a monoclonal antibody against DNA polymerase (DNA-PA). In acute viral hepatitis with perivenular confluent necrosis, proliferation of typical bile ducts was found frequently in portal areas. In chronic aggressive hepatitis and cirrhosis, ductular proliferation of both typical and atypical forms was found in enlarged portal and periportal areas and in confluent necrotic areas. The number of proliferating biliary epithelial cells that stained positive for DNA-PA was small. There were very few positively stained cells in atypical bile ducts in confluent necrotic areas of cirrhosis. Atypical bile ducts seen in chronic aggressive hepatitis, cirrhosis and acute hepatitis with confluent necrosis were positively stained for both cytokeratins 8 and 19. In cirrhosis, the number of stained biliary epithelial cells in typical bile ducts was larger than the number of such cells in atypical bile ducts (P< 0.01). By electron microscopy, the cells positively stained for DNA-PA were mostly so-called clear cells with irregular nuclei containing coarse nucleoplasm, and a few small cells with scanty cytoplasm and few organelles.  相似文献

Mass screening for hepatitis C virus antibody was carried out in 875 inhabitants (313 men and 562 women) of a town in Japan with a high rate of hepatitis B virus infection. The overall rate of positivity for anti-HCV was 8.8% (6.4% in men and 10,1% in women). The rate of positivity for hepatitis B virus surface antigen was 11.2%. Five subjects (0.6%) were positive for both markers. HCV-RNA was detected in 65 (88.4%) of 77 individuals who were positive for anti-HCV and in 1 (1.5%) of 60 individuals negative for anti-HCV. The genotype of the HCV genome was determined by PCR analysis using type-specific primers in 60 individuals. HCV type 1b was detected in 51 subjects (85%), type 2a in 3 subjects (5%), and type 2b in 6 subjects (10%). None of the individuals was infected with more than one genotype. The nucleotide sequences of the partial nonstructural 5 region of HCV type 1b genotype obtained from 6 individuals showed at least 92.0% homology in the nucleotide sequence, and 94.8% homology in the amino acid sequence. Homology among these clones was greater than their homology with previously described type 1 b sequences. The findings suggest that there was a specific local origin of HCV infection, although it was not possible to identify any single source of HCV infection. The results also indicate the presence of asymptomatic HCV carriers. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Tenosynovial thickening within the confined space of the carpal tunnel is thought to be the cause of the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, little is known about the pathological mechanism of tenosynovial thickening. In this study, the role of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) (two representative molecules that can induce oedema by increasing vascular permeability) was analysed in CTS by using immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorptive assay (ELISA). Expression of these molecules was compared with the patients' clinical histories and a temporary increase in production of these molecules was found in cells within the vessels and synovial lining during the intermediate phase of the syndrome when the histology of the tenosynovium changes from oedematous to fibrotic. Statistical analysis clearly demonstrated that there is a close correlation between the expression of PGE(2) and VEGF. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis with anti-proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) revealed that the area with distinct VEGF expression closely matched the area where endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and synovial lining cells proliferate. In contrast, despite marked alteration in the extracellular matrix (ECM) component of the tenosynovium, the fibroblasts responsible for most ECM framework production do not proliferate during any phase of CTS. Histological analysis demonstrated that angiogenesis takes place only during the intermediate phase. Since clusters of capillaries and arterioles are often surrounded by type III collagen-rich, disorganized, degenerate connective tissue, which contains fewer fibroblasts than normal, angiogenesis appears to take place as a part of a regenerative reaction that results in fibrosis. These findings strongly indicate that both PGE(2) and VEGF are expressed in the tenosynovium in CTS during the intermediate phase and induce the histological changes seen in the tenosynovium.  相似文献

A case is reported of atypical glomus tumor occurring in the posterior inferior mediastinum of a 26-year-old woman complaining of severe back pain. The tumor was composed of atypical small, round tumor cells with scattered mitotic figures. In addition to sheet-like, diffuse proliferation of the tumor cells, some areas of the tumor contained small “glo-moid” cells arranged in organoid and hemangiopericytoma-like patterns. Immunohistochemically, many tumor cells were positive for muscle-type actins and a few cells were focally positive for desmin. Ultrastructural studies revealed smooth muscle features of tumor cells, that is, pinocytotic vesicles, external laminas, dense plaques, and occasional thin filaments with dense bodies. The patient remained well for 5 years and 4 months after the operation without additional radiation and chemotherapy. The tumor was diagnosed as an atypical, or low-grade malignant, glomus tumor morphologically. It seems important to recognize the presence of this type of tumor in sites other than extremities and to differentiate it from other malignant small, round cell tumors.  相似文献

The cricothyroid (CT) and the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscles in the larynx are activated by the laryngeal motoneurons located within the nucleus ambiguus; these motoneurons receive the laryngeal sensory information from the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) during respiration and swallowing. We investigated whether the neurons in the NTS projected directly to the laryngeal motoneurons, and what is the synaptic organization of their nerve terminals on the laryngeal motoneurons using the electron microscope. When wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) was injected into the NTS after cholera toxin subunit B-conjugated HRP (CT-HRP) was injected into the CT muscle or the PCA muscle, the anterogradely WGA-HRP-labeled terminals from the NTS were found to directly contact the retrogradely CT-HRP-labeled dendrites and soma of both the CT and the PCA motoneurons. The labeled NTS terminals comprised about 4% of the axosomatic terminals in a section through the CT motoneurons, and about 9% on both the small (PCA-A) and the large (PCA-B) PCA motoneurons. The number of labeled axosomatic terminals containing round vesicles and making asymmetric synaptic contacts (Gray’s type I) was almost equal to that of the labeled terminals containing pleomorphic vesicles and making symmetric synaptic contacts (Gray’s type II) on the CT motoneurons. The labeled axosomatic terminals were mostly Gray’s type II on the PCA-A motoneurons, while the majority of them were Gray’s type I on the PCA-B motoneurons. These results indicate that the laryngeal CT and PCA motoneurons receive a few direct excitatory and inhibitory inputs from the neurons in the NTS. Accepted: 2 June 2000  相似文献

A considerable diversity in prognosis is seen with membranous nephropathy (MN). In terms of pathological findings, the presence of tubulointerstitial lesions was emphasized as a poor prognostic factor. However, the glomerular factors affecting the long-term outcome of idiopathic human MN have remained unclear. We reviewed the initial clinicopathological factors affecting the primary and secondary outcomes in 105 patients with primary MN, as well as reviewing previous reports. Based on electron microscopic (EM) findings, we could divide patients into two subtypes and one subgroup; i.e., homogeneous type with a synchronous phase of electron-dense deposits, with large dense deposits (deep subgroup) and heterogeneous type with various phases of dense deposits. The homogeneous type showed no endstage renal failure, and had earlier remission as compared with the heterogeneous type. For the secondary outcome, heterogeneous type and deep subgroup were also independent risk factors. However, there was no significant difference in the final primary or secondary outcome for any treatment subgroups. These results indicated that our category of EM findings was a beneficial marker of the primary and secondary outcomes in MN; the homogeneous type of MN with synchronous phase of electron-dense deposits (except for the "deep" subgroup) had a good outcome.  相似文献
