OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate 2 thione primers and 3 resin adhesives for enhancement of bonding strength to a silver-palladium-copper-gold alloy. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Two different sized disk specimens (10- and 8-mm diameter by 2.5-mm thick) were prepared from a silver-palladium-copper-gold alloy (Castwell M.C. 12, GC). The specimens were airborne-particle abraded with 50-microm-grain alumina, conditioned either with a thiouracil primer (Metaltite, Tokuyama Dental) or with a triazine dithione primer (V-Primer, Sun Medical), and then bonded with 1 of 3 acrylic resins: a benzoyl peroxide-amine redox-initiated resin adhesive (Multi-Bond, Tokuyama Dental) or a tri-nbutylborane-initiated resin adhesive (Super-Bond C&B and Super-Bond Quick, Sun Medical). For each adhesive, unprimed specimens were prepared as experimental controls. Shear bond strength was determined after thermocycling (100,000 cycles). RESULTS: Use of primers significantly (P < .05) enhanced the bond strength of specimens in all adhesives. Irrespective of the type of primer, the strength of Multi-Bond adhesive was significantly (P < .05) lower than that of Super-Bond C&B and Super-Bond Quick adhesives. The strength of the 2 tri-n-butylborane-initiated adhesives did not differ significantly (P > .05). The mean strength of the Super-Bond C&B adhesive was 40.4 MPa with Metaltite and 37.8 MPa with V-Primer; that of Super-Bond Quick adhesive was 40.9 MPa with Metaltite and 36.5 MPa with V-Primer. CONCLUSION: Use of thione primers effectively enhanced the strength of the bond to the silver-palladium-copper-gold alloy. Furthermore, the combinations of primers and tri-n-butylborane-initiated adhesives were found to be more efficient for bonding.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in oral air are the only type of gases correlated with the strength of oral malodor. We developed a compact and simple gas chromatograph (GC) equipped with a newly invented indium oxide semiconductor gas sensor (SCS) for measuring the concentrations of VSCs in mouth air. We have assessed the correlation between measurements with a GC-SCS and those with a regular GC. METHODS: Oral air samples from randomly selected volunteers were analyzed with both a GC-SCS and a GC with a flame photometric detector (FPD), which is specific to VSCs, and GC-SCS measurements were compared to those obtained by GC-FPD. Subsequently, oral air samples before and after mouthrinsing with 5% ethanol mouthwash were analyzed to determine the effect of ethanol on VSC measurements by GC-SCS. RESULTS: There were strong correlations between VSC concentrations determined using these two gas chromatography methods (hydrogen sulfide, R=0.821, P<0.0001; methyl mercaptan, R=0.870, P<0.0001; and dimethyl sulfide, R=0.770, P<0.0001). Although GC-SCS can differentiate ethanol and VSCs in oral air samples after mouthrinsing, GC-SCS measurements demonstrated higher values than those obtained by GC-FPD; however, this discrepancy improved over time due to the reduced effect of ethanol. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that GC-SCS may be useful for the diagnosis of halitosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the need for secondary alveolar bone grafting (ABG) in incomplete alveolar clefts identified clinically from its appearance and test the usefulness of alveolar ridge notching in the edentulous stage as a predictor for ABG. DESIGN: A prospective, cross-sectional study comparing three groups of patients at two stages. PATIENTS: Twenty-four patients with unilateral incomplete cleft of primary palate who underwent either no surgery or cheiloplasty only. METHODS: Cleft severity was assessed at two stages. Initially, the appearance of untreated clefts was assessed before cheiloplasty or at 3 months of age in the patient without cheiloplasty and graded by severity into three groups. Later alveolar bone defects were assessed with computed tomography in the primary or mixed dentition period. A decision regarding the requirement for ABG was then made. Finally, the relationship between untreated clefts and the need for ABG was determined. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Nine (75%) of 12 patients with alveolar ridge notching in the edentulous stage were diagnosed as fulfilling the criteria for ABG.Results: The alveolar bone defects correlated with the severity of untreated cleft conditions (Spearman r = 0.65, p =.002). The need for ABG was greater in patients with alveolar ridge notching, compared with those without notching (9/12 versus 0/12, p =.00034). CONCLUSIONS: Most patients with incomplete alveolar clefts clinically identified in the edentulous stage required ABG, and alveolar ridge notching in the edentulous stage could therefore serve as a predictor for ABG.  相似文献

This study evaluated the oxide characteristics on a Ag-Sn particle surface modified by acid and heat in order to understand the bonding mechanism. Nine different Ag-Sn particles including standard Sn, SnO and SnO2 were evaluated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The particles were also used for preparing the composite to test the flexural properties following the ISO 4049. A high correlation between flexural strength of the composites and Sn3d binding energy of their filler particles was found. Different oxide forms (SnO and SnO2) showed different adhesive abilities to bond with 4-META, regarding the difference in flexural strength of the composite. The highest flexural strength composite showed Sn3d binding energy of its filler at 486.4 eV, which was the SnO binding area. This implies that SnO was responsible for a good bond between particle surface and 4-META coupling agent.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the developed investment for the prevention of blackening of a cast Type 4 gold and to analyze the oxides on its surface in relation to the blackening of the alloy. The experimental investments were prepared using a gypsum-bonded investment in which boron (B) or aluminum (Al) was added as a reducing agent. A Type 4 gold alloy was cast into the mold made of the prepared investment. The effect of the additives was evaluated from the color difference (deltaE*) between the as-cast surface and the polished surface of the cast specimen. B and Al were effective to prevent the blackening of a Type 4 gold alloy and the color of the as-cast surface approached that of the polished surface with increasing B and Al content. The prevention of the blackening of the gold alloy can be achieved by restraining the formation of CuO.  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) is an important regulatory molecule in bone formation and resorption. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of NO in orthodontic tooth movement in rats. We used specific inhibitors of NO synthases (NOS). Upper first molars of 9-week-old male Wistar rats were moved buccally for 21 days. The local administration of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester. HCl (L-NAME), a general inhibitor of NOS activity, significantly reduced tooth movement. On the other hand, N(6)-(1-iminoethyl)-L-lysine. 2HCl (L-NIL), a selective inhibitor of the inducible isoform of NOS, had no effect. These results suggest that NO is an important biochemical mediator in the response of periodontal tissue to orthodontic force and is produced primarily through the activity of constitutive NOS.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in myotonic dystrophy (MD) patients. STUDY DESIGN: MRI of the masticatory muscles and TMJ was performed in 15 MD patients, 11 male and 4 female, aged 16 to 53 years (mean, 31 years). Many of them had dental malocclusion, especially Angle class III and anterior open bite, and 3 complained of recurrent TMJ dislocation. TMJ and masticatory muscle pain was not observed, and joint sounds were noted in only 1 patient. RESULTS: The analysis of MRI scans showed masticatory muscle involvement in 13 patients (86.6%). In 11, the involvement was moderate to intense. The main abnormalities observed were increased intramuscular tissue signal on T1 (fatty infiltration) and volumetric reduction of muscles. Regarding the TMJ, articular disk displacement was seen in only 1 patient, but abnormalities of disk shape were common. Mild bone abnormalities were frequently observed, including changes of shape and contour of bone surface, and sclerosis of bone marrow. In 4 patients the condyle moved anterior to the eminence with the mouth opened fully (condylar hyperexcursion). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that masticatory muscles are frequently and intensively affected in MD patients. Bone changes are the most consistent abnormalities observed in the TMJ. It is possible that remodeling is caused by biomechanical changes in the jaw as a result of masticatory muscle involvement.  相似文献

Periodontal disease is the result of a complex interplay of bacterial infection and host responses, and is often modified by various systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Such diseases are capable of affecting the periodontium and/or the treatment of periodontal disease. However, recent research has changed our concept of how periodontal disease should be treated. Here we present several concerns directed towards the periodontal therapy of patients with diabetes mellitus based on our studies. When treating periodontitis patients who have diabetes mellitus it is important to consider the type of diabetes. Patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus can be further classified according to the degree of insulin resistance, since recent epidemiological studies have suggested that successful anti-microbial therapy might result in improved insulin resistance in highly insulin resistant patients. Because the major contributing factor for insulin resistance is currently considered to be the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and because periodontal surgery may cause transient bacteremia which may up-regulate the serum TNF-alpha level, which in turn suppresses insulin action, patients should be strictly treated non-surgically and their serum TNF-alpha levels should be periodically monitored. On the other hand, diabetic patients positive for serum anti-glutamate decarboxylase auto-antibody should be examined for the source of this antibody, since 1) gingival and periodontal ligament fibroblasts were found to express glutamate decarboxylase, and 2) some otherwise healthy periodontitis patients develop anti-glutamate decarboxylase antibody. Thus, chronic periodontitis may influence the level of this antibody which is widely used as a predictive marker for slowly progressive insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Not only is periodontal disease thereby affected by systemic diseases, but carefully managed periodontal therapy may also have a positive effect on the general health of patients with systemic diseases.  相似文献

Abstract In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the in vitro interleukin-2 (IL-2) producing capacity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and lymphocytes from patients with different forms of periodontitis. 45 patients (12 with localised early onset periodontitis (LEOP), 20 with generalised early onset periodontitis (GEOP), and 13 with adult periodontitis (AP), and 20 periodontally healthy subjects (HS), participated in this study. PBMC and lymphocytes were isolated from the subjects and their cells were stimulated with an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody (anti-CD3 MoAb) and the secreted IL-2 levels in the culture were bioassayed. No significant differences could be found in IL-2 producing activity of PBMC between the patients and HS group. There was wide interindividual variation and high and low “IL-2 producers” were noted. We found a LEOP patient who was a high producer of IL-2 (>mean+8 SD) and 2 LEOP patients and a HS who were low producers of IL-2 (相似文献
