The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of .12% chlorhexidine applied via spray and the acceptance. A total of 26 individuals with mental health issues, aged 7–14, were included into two groups: placebo (control, n = 13) and chlorhexidine (experimental, n = 13). Both groups received two daily applications of spray during 2 months. The periodontal conditions were evaluated by the simplified oral hygiene index (OHI‐S) and gingival index (GI). The evaluation of acceptance of the application method (spray) was assessed by questionnaire. Data were analyzed with nonparametric tests, with a significance level of 5%. Regarding the OHI‐S index, only the experimental group showed significant change during the evaluations (p < 0.001). Regarding the GI, both groups showed significant changes during the evaluations. The method of application was well accepted by patients and caregivers, and .12% chlorhexidine solution applied via spray significantly reduced the rates of dental and gingival biofilm.  相似文献

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) spectrum disorders affect approximately 1 billion individuals worldwide. However, the drivers of progressive steatohepatitis remain incompletely defined. Ketogenesis can dispose of much of the fat that enters the liver, and dysfunction in this pathway could promote the development of NAFLD. Here, we evaluated mice lacking mitochondrial 3-hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA synthase (HMGCS2) to determine the role of ketogenesis in preventing diet-induced steatohepatitis. Antisense oligonucleotide–induced loss of HMGCS2 in chow-fed adult mice caused mild hyperglycemia, increased hepatic gluconeogenesis from pyruvate, and augmented production of hundreds of hepatic metabolites, a suite of which indicated activation of the de novo lipogenesis pathway. High-fat diet feeding of mice with insufficient ketogenesis resulted in extensive hepatocyte injury and inflammation, decreased glycemia, deranged hepatic TCA cycle intermediate concentrations, and impaired hepatic gluconeogenesis due to sequestration of free coenzyme A (CoASH). Supplementation of the CoASH precursors pantothenic acid and cysteine normalized TCA intermediates and gluconeogenesis in the livers of ketogenesis-insufficient animals. Together, these findings indicate that ketogenesis is a critical regulator of hepatic acyl-CoA metabolism, glucose metabolism, and TCA cycle function in the absorptive state and suggest that ketogenesis may modulate fatty liver disease.  相似文献

Diabetes mellitus (DM) leads to a decrease in bone mass and increase the risk of osteoporosis and in this context, many treatments have shown to accelerate bone metabolism. It seems that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is able of stimulating osteoblast activity and produced increased biomechanical properties. However, its effects on bone in diabetic rats are not fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of LLLT on bone formation, immunoexpression of osteogenic factors, biomechanical properties and densitometric parameters in diabetic rats. Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into three experimental groups: control group, diabetic group, and laser-treated diabetic group. DM was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) and after 1 week laser treatment started. An 830-nm laser was used, performed for 18 sessions, during 6 weeks. At the end of the experiment, animals were euthanized and tibias and femurs were defleshed for analysis. Extensive resorptive areas as a result of osteoclasts activity were noticed in DG when compared to control. Laser-treated animals showed an increased cortical area. The immunohistochemical analysis revealed that LLLT produced an increased RUNX-2 expression compared to other groups. Similar RANK-L immunoexpression was observed for all experimental groups. In addition, laser irradiation produced a statistically increase in fracture force, bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density compared to DG. The results of this study indicate that the STZ model was efficient in inducing DM 1 and producing a decrease in cortical diameter, biomechanical properties and in densitometric variables. In addition, it seems that LLLT stimulated bone metabolism, decreased resorptive areas, increased RUNX-2 expression, cortical area, fracture force, BMD, and BMC. Further studies should be developed to provide additional information concerning the mechanisms of action of laser therapy in diabetic bone in experimental and clinical trials.  相似文献

It is assumed that hemodialysis treatment can diminish the levels of genetic damage in circulating lymphocytes by cleaning the blood of uremic toxins that cause oxidative stress. However, the hemodialysis process by itself may also induce genomic damage by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). We conducted a follow‐up study in a group of 70 hemodialysis patients followed for a mean time of 15 months. We investigated the effect of exposure time in hemodialysis on the levels of genetic damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes using the micronucleus assay. In addition, genetic damage after in vitro irradiation with 0.5 Gy was also analyzed to evaluate changes in radiosensitivity. Our results showed that, at the end of the study, there was a decrease in both the basal levels of genetic damage (9.9 ± 1.0 vs. 7.6 ± 0.7) and radiosensitivity values (38.5 ± 3.0 vs. 27.6 ± 2.4). We conclude that hemodialysis procedures may act as an ameliorating factor reducing the genetic damage present in chronic kidney disease patients. Environ. Mol.
