In order to characterize the patterns of human exposure to spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsial and leptospiral infection, IgG surveys were conducted on 642 residents of ten different areas of the rural district of Necoclí, Colombia. Areas were selected based on forest cover and human settlement pattern, and individual risk factors were elucidated through multivariate logistic models, controlling for variance clustering within communities. Overall, prevalence of high antibody titers indicating previous exposure to SFG rickettsia and leptospira was 29.2% and 35.6%, respectively, and both were most prevalent in the same peri-urban neighborhood. Forest cover .10% demonstrated the strongest independent association with leptospiral exposure, followed by homes with outdoor storage sheds. Isolated rural housing was the only variable independently associated with SFG rickettsia exposure. Community-level variables significantly modified the effects of individual risk factors. For both pathogens the eldest quartile was less exposed in periurban areas although there was no age effect overall for either. Females living in population settlements were more exposed to SFG rickettsiae but there was no sex association in isolated rural houses. Similarly, in sites with forest cover .10%, individuals working at home had higher leptospira seroprevalence, but place of work was not a risk factor in areas of forest cover ,10%. These data suggest that the patterns of maintenance and/or exposure to leptospira and rickettsia vary across different human created landscapes and settlement patterns. While contrasting risk factors may reflect the unique transmission cycles of each pathogen, the observed patterns of geographic variation suggest that both diseases may respond similarly larger scale human-ecological dynamics. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if Rituximab coated Biodegradable Nanoparticles (BNPs) loaded with Chlorambucil and Hydroxychloroquine could induce apoptosis of B-Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (B-CLL), MEC-1 and BJAB cells in vitro and evaluate their toxic and therapeutic effects on a Human/Mouse Model of Burkitt Lymphoma at an exploratory, proof of concept scale. We found that Rituximab-Chlorambucil-Hydroxychloroquine BNPs induce a decrease in cell viability of malignant B cells in a dose-dependent manner. The mediated cytotoxicity resulted from apoptosis, and was confirmed by monitoring the B-CLL cells after Annexin V/propidium iodide staining. Additional data revealed that these BNPs were non toxic for healthy animals, and had prolonged survival in this mice model of human lymphoma. 相似文献

Helical tomotherapy is a relatively new modality with integrated treatment planning and delivery hardware for radiation therapy treatments. In view of the uniqueness of the hardware design of the helical tomotherapy unit and its implications in routine quality assurance, the Therapy Physics Committee of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine commissioned Task Group 148 to review this modality and make recommendations for quality assurance related methodologies. The specific objectives of this Task Group are: (a) To discuss quality assurance techniques, frequencies, and tolerances and (b) discuss dosimetric verification techniques applicable to this unit. This report summarizes the findings of the Task Group and aims to provide the practicing clinical medical physicist with the insight into the technology that is necessary to establish an independent and comprehensive quality assurance program for a helical tomotherapy unit. The emphasis of the report is to describe the rationale for the proposed QA program and to provide example tests that can be performed, drawing from the collective experience of the task group members and the published literature. It is expected that as technology continues to evolve, so will the test procedures that may be used in the future to perform comprehensive quality assurance for helical tomotherapy units. 相似文献

Selenium compounds display neuroprotective activities mediated at least in part by their antioxidant actions. Oxidative damage has been implicated in psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and an alteration in expression of selenium-binding protein-1 (SELENBP-1) has been recently reported in both the blood and brain of schizophrenic patients. In the present study we examined the effects of the organic selenium compound 3′3-ditrifluoromethyldiphenyl diselenide [(F3CPhSe)2] on apomorphine-induced stereotypy in mice, an animal model of psychosis. Systemic administration of (F3CPhSe)2 at the highest dose used (25.0 μmol/kg in a 10.0 ml/kg injection volume) significantly reduced apomorphine-induced stereotyped behaviors. A series of control experiments showed that the same dose of (F3CPhSe)2 did not affect open-field behavior, habituation, or aversively motivated memory. The results indicate that organic selenium compounds should be further investigated as agents with possible antipsychotic properties. 相似文献

Acanthamoeba spp. contains a group of free-living amoebae widespread in nature. These microorganisms may cause several diseases in humans including osteomyelitis. Here we characterize the cellular interaction between clinical and freshwater isolates of A. polyphaga with human osteoblasts. Amoeba cytoadherence was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. We observed that the clinical isolate readily adheres to human osteoblastic cells (HOB) in a saturable and time-dependent fashion. The cytoadhesion appears to be in part dependent on mannose-associated surface glycoconjugates, since prior incubation of the amoebae with alpha-mannose reduced cytoadhesion approximately 75%. Scanning electron microscopy revealed various amoebae exhibiting acanthapodia contacting the surface of osteoblasts. Some osteoblasts developed morphologies resembling apoptotic cells. The clinical isolate was highly toxic to HOB cells during 24 h of cell-protozoan interaction. Cytotoxicity was also dependent on the amoeba-cell ratio. During the cytopathogenic process we observed amoebae in the apparent process of ingestion of target cells and also amoebae extending projections or digipodia into osteoblast targets. This study examines the basal insulin levels in a population from Zulia state (Venezuela). A total of 1703 subjects (1175 women and 528 men) from five different sanitary regions (Maracaibo, La Guajira, Perijá, Sur del Lago de Maracaibo, y Costa Oriental del Lago de Maracaibo) were studied. Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, and blood pressure were determined. A blood sample was taken after a 12-h overnight fast to determine serum glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL-C using enzymatic methods and insulin by radioimmunoassay. According to ATP III criteria two groups were established: a group without metabolic abnormalities (138 subjects) and a group with some metabolic abnormalities 84.8% of subjects of the non metabolic alteration groups and 80.4% of the group with some metabolic alteration were of mixed race. Non metabolic altered lean subjects (BMI <25 Kg/m2) had the lowest (p < 0.0001) basal insulin levels compared to the ones with overweight from the same group and the obese with metabolic abnormalities. This study proposes to consider a cutoff basal insulin levels of 13 microU/mL for women and 11 microU/mL for men, over 20 years of age, in the Zulia state region of Venezuela. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of serological detection of mumps IgM and titration of IgG in patients with acute parotitis according to their vaccination status. The detection of mumps virus RNA in saliva by RT-PCR was used as reference. 116 patients (109 of them previously vaccinated) with mumps RT-PCR-negative results and 21 (19 vaccinated) with mumps RT-PCR-positive results were studied. Mumps-specific IgM and IgG were assayed by EIA (Enzygnost, Dade Behring, Germany). IgM results were expressed as positive or negative. For IgG, several cut-offs were calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Seven RT-PCR-positive and five RT-PCR-negative patients showed IgM-positive results (sensitivity 33.3% and specificity 95.7%). Among vaccinated patients, the sensitivity and specificity of IgM were 26.3% (5/19) and 99.1% (108/109). For IgG, a titer of 5,000 in all the patients showed a sensitivity of 76.2% (16/21) and a specificity of 83.6% (97/116). In vaccinated patients, the corresponding figures for this cut-off were 84.2% (16/19) and 83.5% (91/109), respectively. Although IgM detection against mumps is highly specific, its sensitivity is very low in immunized subjects. In this group, the titration of IgG could serve as an additional diagnostic tool. 相似文献

5 and D12 and received a daily intranasal OVA challenge (40 μl) between the D19 and D21. On D23, we performed a bronchoalveolar
lavage (BAL) on the mice. Four BALB/c mice (control group) were immunised against OVA using the same protocol, but did not
receive parasite extract. Total cell counts (TCC) and differential cell counts were performed in BAL fluid samples. Eosinophil
cell counts in BAL fluid were lower in the group that received A. costaricensis extract when compared with the control group (0.04×106 cells/ml and 0.01×106 cells/ml, respectively; p=0.04). TCC were not different between the groups studied. A. costaricensis extract in mice decreases eosinophilic response to OVA in BAL fluid. 相似文献

Several findings suggest that catecholaminergic neurones in the caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM) contribute to body fluid homeostasis and cardiovascular regulation. The present study sought to determine the effects of lesions of these neurones on the cardiovascular responses induced by changes in circulating volume. All experiments were performed in male Wistar rats (320-360 g). Medullary catecholaminergic neurones were lesioned by microinjection of anti-dopamine beta-hydroxylase-saporin (6.3 ng in 60 nl; SAP rats, n = 14) into the CVLM, whereas sham rats received microinjections of free saporin (1.3 ng in 60 nl, n = 15). Two weeks later, rats were anaesthetized (urethane, 1.2 g kg(-1), i.v.), instrumented for measurement of mean arterial pressure (MAP), renal blood flow (RBF) and renal vascular conductance (RVC), and infused with hypertonic saline (HS; 3 m NaCl, 0.18 ml (100 g body weight)(-1), i.v.) or an isotonic solution (volume expansion, VE; 4% Ficoll, 1% of body weight, i.v.). In sham rats, HS induced sustained increases in RBF and RVC (155 +/- 7 and 145 +/- 6% of baseline, at 20 min after HS). In SAP rats, RBF responses to HS were blunted (125 +/- 6%) and RVC increases were abolished (108 +/- 5%) 20 min after HS. Isotonic solution increased RBF and RVC in sham rats (149 +/- 10 and 145 +/- 12% of baseline, respectively, at 20 min). These responses were reduced in SAP rats (131 +/- 6 and 126 +/- 5%, respectively, at 20 min). Pressor responses to HS were larger in SAP rats than in sham rats (17 +/- 5 versus 9 +/- 2 mmHg, at 20 min), whereas during VE these responses were similar in both groups (6 +/- 3 versus 4 +/- 6 mmHg, at 20 min). Immunohistochemical analysis indicates that microinjections of anti-DbetaH-saporin produced extensive destruction within the A1/C1 cell groups in the CVLM. These results suggest that catecholaminergic neurones mediate the cardiovascular responses to VE or increases in plasma sodium levels. 相似文献

We present a new bio-inspired approach applied to a problem of stereo image matching. This approach is based on an artificial epidemic process, which we call the infection algorithm. The problem at hand is a basic one in computer vision for 3D scene reconstruction. It has many complex aspects and is known as an extremely difficult one. The aim is to match the contents of two images in order to obtain 3D information that allows the generation of simulated projections from a viewpoint that is different from the ones of the initial photographs. This process is known as view synthesis. The algorithm we propose exploits the image contents in order to produce only the necessary 3D depth information, while saving computational time. It is based on a set of distributed rules, which propagate like an artificial epidemic over the images. Experiments on a pair of real images are presented, and realistic reprojected images have been generated. 相似文献
