In Peninsular Malaysia, a large proportion of malaria cases occur in the central mountainous and forested parts of the country. As part of a study to assess remote sensing data as a tool for vector mapping, we conducted entomological surveys to determine the type of mosquitoes, their characteristics and the abundance of habitats of the vector Anopheles maculatus in malaria endemic areas in Pos Senderot. An. maculatus mosquitoes were collected from 49 breeding sites in Pos Senderot. An. maculatus preferred to breed in water pockets formed on the bank of rivers and waterfalls. The most common larval habitats were shallow pools 5.0-15.0 cm deep with clear water, mud substrate and plants or floatage. The mosquito also preferred open or partially shaded habitats. Breeding habitats were generally located at 100-400 m from the nearest human settlement. Changes in breeding characteristics were also observed. Instead of breeding in slow flowing streams, most larvae bred in small water pockets along the river margin.  相似文献

Over the past few decades, microwave processing and its high potential capabilities have attracted food scientists. Application of microwave for microencapsulation is an innovative and new method in which the shell, due to having different dielectric constant, can fuse and cover core. In this research, the citric acid powder at various size ranges was microencapsulated by casein and inulin, using a domestic microwave oven. Then, for sensory evaluation purposes, they along with uncoated citric acid and commercial microcapsules were incorporated in chewing gum formulation. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations revealed the potential capability of this technique at micronized scales. Moreover, findings on some sensory characteristics showed practical and efficient applicability of inulin-coated microcapsules in chewing gum where its sensory scores were competitive and even much better than commercial ones. In addition, these observations elucidate a new approach for producing functional, nutritional and dietetic chewing gums.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Stimulated 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 (5-HT(3)) receptors promote intestinal motility, secretion, and sensation, effects that are related to the known pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A previous meta-analysis of 6 randomized controlled trials of the 5-HT(3)-receptor antagonist alosetron found that this agent was associated with global improvement in symptoms, pain, and discomfort in patients with IBS. OBJECTIVE: This was a meta-analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled trials that evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of alosetron for the management of IBS. It updated and expanded on the previous meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and the cochrane central Register of controlled Trials were searched from 1966 through September 2007 for placebo-controlled trials that examined the efficacy and tolerability of alosetron in the management of IBS. The search terms were alosetron, 5-HT, irritable bowel, functional bowel diseases, and irritable colon. No language restriction was applied. The data were analyzed in terms of 2 main outcomes: global improvement in IBS symptoms and adequate relief of IBS pain and discomfort. RESULTS: Eight multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, 12-week clinical trials met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The studies included 4,170 patients with IBS (80% female) who were randomized to receive either alosetron or placebo. All patients met the Rome criteria for IBS, and all subtypes of IBS were represented. Most patients had diarrhea-predominant IBS; only 2.6% of patients had constipation-predominant IBS. In the 3 trials included in the analysis of global improvement in symptoms, alosetron was significantly more effective than placebo (relative risk [RR] = 1.60; 95% CI, 1.44-1.76; P <0.001). In the 6 trials included in the analysis of adequate relief of IBS pain and discomfort, there was also a significant difference in favor of alosetron (RR = 1.31; 95% CI, 1.20-1.43; P < 0.001). Analysis of adequate relief of IBS pain and discomfort by sex also indicated significant differences between alosetron and placebo in both sexes (female: RR = 1.34 [95% cI, 1.21-1.48]; male: RR = 1.23 [95% CI, 1.02-1.47]). The analysis of tolerability, which was based on data from 7 studies, found a significant difference between alosetron and placebo (RR = 1.19; 95% cI, 1.07-1.31; P<0.001). The only adverse events that occurred with a significantly higher incidence in those treated with alosetron compared with placebo were constipation in 8 trials (RR = 4.35; 95% CI, 3.01-6.26; P < 0.001) and abdominal pain and discomfort in 5 trials (RR = 1.96; 95% CI, 1.46-2.64; P < 0.001). In the alosetron group, there were 4 cases of ischemic colitis (0.16%) and 2 cases of serious complications of constipation (0.08%); neither of these was reported in the placebo group. Alosetron was not associated with any deaths. CONCLUSIONS: Alosetron was effective in these men and women with IBS. constipation was the most frequently reported adverse event associated with alosetron therapy. Ischemic colitis and serious complications of constipation were reported in a small number of patients treated with alosetron.  相似文献

Background: Dental injury is well recognized as a potential complication of laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. The flange of the Macintosh blade may contact teeth during laryngoscopy causing damage. The Callander modification of the Macintosh blade (Callander blade) with a shortened heel at the proximal end has been shown to increase the blade–tooth distance and reduce contact rates in adults. Aim: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Callander blade on reducing dental contact in children. Methods: One hundred children, aged 4–14 years, scheduled for general anesthesia requiring endotracheal intubation were studied prospectively. The children were preoperatively evaluated for Mallampati score and dental defects, looseness, and avulsions. Following induction of anesthesia, laryngoscopy was performed twice on each child in succession, once with a standard Macintosh blade and once with a Callander blade of the same size in a random order. The blade–tooth distance and contact rate were compared between the two blades. Results: With the Callander blade, the blade–tooth distance was greater than with the Macintosh (1.78 ± 1.77 vs 0.28 ± 0.76 mm, P = 0.001). The frequency of direct contact was less with the Callander blade than it was with the Macintosh blade (33% vs 86%, respectively, P = 0.008). However, difficult laryngoscopy rate did not differ between the blades. Tracheal intubation was successful in all children and there was no dental injury. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the Callander blade decreases the risk for dental injury and provides tracheal intubating conditions in children with normal airways similar to those obtained with a traditional Macintosh blade.  相似文献

Background

Twelve-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is a common and inexpensive tool for the diagnostic workup of patients with suspected cardiovascular disease, both in clinical and epidemiological settings. The present study was designed to evaluate ECG abnormalities in Mashhad population.

Methods

ECGs were taken as part of MASHAD cohort study (phase1) and were coded according to the Minnesota coding criteria. Data were analyzed using SPSS.

Results

Total 9035 ECGs were available for final analysis including 3615 (40.0%) male and 5420 (60.0%) female. Among ECG abnormalities precordial Q wave, major T-wave abnormalities, inferior Q wave, sinus bradycardia, and left axis deviation were the most prevalent abnormalities. The frequency of precordial and inferior Q wave, inferior QS pattern, major and minor ST abnormalities, major and minor T abnormalities, Wolff-Parkinson-White and Brugada pattern, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, left axis deviation, ST elevation, and tall T wave were significantly different between two genders. Moreover, the frequency of Q wave in precordial and aVL leads, QS pattern in precordial and inferior leads, major and minor T-wave abnormalities, Wolff-Parkinson-White, atrial fibrillation, sinus bradycardia, left axis deviation, and ST elevation were significantly different in different age groups. A comparison of the heart rate, P-wave duration, and QRS duration between men and women indicated that there was a significant difference.

Conclusions

Our finding indicated that the prevalence ECG abnormalities are different between men and women and also it varied in different age groups.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) is recognized as a cause of graft loss in renal transplant patients. The disorder may be related to the introduction of new, potent immunosuppressive regimens. We sought to assess the prevalence, outcome, and clinical characteristics of BKVN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 160 specimens from episode biopsies. BKVN was diagnosed by light microscopic examination and positive immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Among 160 patients, 21 (13.1%) were diagnosed as BKVN. The mean interval between biopsy and transplantation was 13.6 +/- 10.67 months. There were no significant differences between BKVN patients and non-BKVN patients with respect to age, sex, interval between diagnosis and transplantation, cyclosporine blood level, and azathioprine versus mycophenolate mofetil immunosuppression. Graft loss occurred in 57.1% of BKVN versus 12.2% of non-BKVN subjects (P = .005). There was a significant difference between antilymphocyte globulin (ALG)- and non-ALG-treated groups with respect to the incidence of BKVN (6.6% in non-ALG versus 19% in ALG groups; P < .01). BKVN was diagnosed by immunohistochemistry in 61% of specimens with acute rejection according to light microscopic evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of BKVN in Iranian renal allograft recipients. In our hospital, the prevalence of BKVN was higher than that previously reported for non-Iranian recipients. BKVN had a negative impact on graft survival.  相似文献

In this paper, a microwave microscope is presented for characterization of skin abnormalities. A coplanar waveguide probe is designed and fabricated for high-resolution near-field imaging of the biological samples. Several simulations and measurement studies are described to present the capability of the proposed probe in identification of different tissues and the detection of fat masses at different depths. In addition, two methods are used to eliminate the measurement noise which is caused by non-targeted tissues. Then, the contours around the masses are obtained applying an edge detection method. The measurement results show that the proposed probe can detect the fat masses with amplitude contrast about 15 dB at a λ/10 (at 14.36 GHz) standoff distance. The proposed microscope is easy to fabricate, and provides a low-cost solution for fast and accurate skin cancer detection of abnormalities in human body such as early detection of small tumors in breast or skin cancers.  相似文献

Background

Recent studies have shown that Vitamin D deficiency is very common globally. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with lipid metabolism. A relationship between vitamin D levels and waist circumference (WC) has been observed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and metabolic dyslipidemia and the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted on 265 healthy Tehran adults. Hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype (HTGWP) was described as serum triacylglycerol concentrations >150?mg/dL and concurrent WC?>?88?cm (women) and >102?cm (men). Dyslipidemia was defined as: 1) TG level of >150?mg/dL 2) HDL?>?40?mg/dL for men or >50?mg/dL for women, as has been previously described.

Results

Current study’s results demonstrated that HTGWP was significantly associated with weight, age, WC, hip, fat percent, TG, lipid profile, ALT and BMI. We found 77% reduction in the chances of developing metabolic dyslipidemia in suficient satus of vitamin D in compare to deficiency, although the significancy was mariginal, OR: 0.33, 95% CI of 0.09 to 1.21, P?=?0.09. However, our results revealed that vitamin D deficiency, compared with normal status, can increase the risk of phenotype 1 (high TG/high WC); OR: 3.86 and 95% CI from 0.86 to 0.99, p for trend?=?0.05.

Conclusions

Significant associations were found between vitamin D status and HTGWP. In addition, there was a relationship between vitamin D and lipid profiles. There is a direct correlation between TG and waist circumference in insulin resistance in healthy Tehran adults.  相似文献
