Synthesis of electrophoretically restricted IgG by cultured rheumatoid synovium

IgG synthesized by excised rheumatoid (RA) synovia was separated according to isoelectric point using chromatofocusing and isoelectric focusing. Over 30% of the IgG synthesized by 9 of 11 synovia had an isoelectric point greater than 8 (cathodal shift), while 55% of the synovia secreted IgG showing oligoclonal banding by isoelectric focusing. Oligoclonal serum IgG was seen in 17% of RA patients and in only 3% of hospitalized patients without RA. These results emphasize the selective character of the antigenic stimulus of the RA synovial lymphoid infiltrate.     

A histological study of the formation and development of the soft palate in mice and man

The secondary palate was examined to determine formation of the soft palate with regard to the process of merging and/or fusion. A midline seam of epithelium was observed in the region of the future soft palate, indicating that epithelial adherence and mesenchymal fusion was occurring, and not merging. Epithelial breakdown was more rapid and complete in the presumptive soft palate and along the junction of the nasal septum and palate than in the midline of the future hard palate. Based upon these observations and other studies, the hypothesis is proposed that the medial palatal epithelium is different and/or is acted upon differently in the anterior and posterior regions of the developing secondary palate.     

Immunoglobulin synthesis in vitro by human thymus: comparison of myasthenia gravis and normal thymus

Immunoglobulin synthesis measured in incubated thymus tissue by the incorporation of [¹⁴C]amino acids has been studied in four thymus glands from patients with myasthenia gravis and in eight normal thymus glands from patients undergoing open heart surgery. Parallel studies have been carried out with one normal human spleen and two lymph nodes.
