Criteria of selection of patients with breast cancer for organ-sparing operations

The analysis is given to a number of criteria guiding the selection of breast cancer patients for preserving surgery. The tumor size is one of the most essential criteria. Breast-sparing surgical treatment within radical resection of the breast according to the above selection proved not inferior by survival characteristics to radical mastectomy surpassing it by social and occupational results.     

Prevalence and correlates of tobacco use among Russian cancer patients: Implications for the development of smoking cessation interventions at a cancer center in Russia

This study examined the rate of smoking among 399 cancer patients in Russia and assessed correlates of tobacco use and readiness to quit smoking. The results indicated that (a) 41.6% of patients were smokers; and (b) smokers were likely to be male, have lung or colorectal cancer, exhibit low levels of knowledge concerning the negative effects of smoking, report a low level of advantages to quitting smoking and a high level of disadvantages to quitting smoking, show low perceived risk for the adverse effects of smoking, and exhibit high fatalistic beliefs. Though certain findings converge well with data collected from U.S. samples of cancer patients, these results can guide the development of smoking interventions that address the specific needs of Russian cancer patients. In sum, this study fills a critical gap in knowledge concerning the epidemic of tobacco use in Russia and broadens research regarding tobacco use by cancer patients from the United States to the Russian Federation. Regulation of ATM/p53-dependent suppression of myc-induced lymphomas by Wip1 phosphatase

The ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) kinase is a key tumor suppressor that regulates numerous cell cycle checkpoints as well as apoptosis. Here, we report that ATM is a critical player in the regulation of apoptosis and lymphomagenesis in the presence of c-myc. In turn, deletion of the inhibitory ATM phosphatase, Wip1, results in ATM up-regulation and suppression of Eμ-myc–induced B cell lymphomas. Using mouse genetic crosses, we show that the onset of myc-induced lymphomas is dramatically delayed in Wip1-null mice in an ATM- and p53-, but not p38 MAPK– or Arf-, dependent manner. We propose that Wip1 phosphatase is critical for regulating the ATM-mediated tumor surveillance network.
