PURPOSE: To determine whether a two-day teaching enhancement workshop at the University of Alberta improved participants' teaching performance as rated by students. METHOD: Workshop participants (academic staff or residents) were asked to assess the value of the workshop. In addition, students were asked to rate instructors' teaching abilities before and after the instructors participated in the workshops, by completing a five-statement questionnaire routinely used to assess instruction at the University of Alberta. For control purposes, ratings were also obtained for a group of instructors who had not taken the workshop, over a similar time period. The authors used data from 1993-2002. RESULTS: The participants uniformly regarded the workshops as helpful. Both faculty and residents regarded the short teaching exercise as the most important component of the program. Of the instructional sections, the presentations on objectives and on structure (set, body, closure) were rated most highly by both groups. The students' mean ratings for the instructors after the workshop were significantly increased, while ratings for those who had not taken the workshop were unchanged CONCLUSION: Short teaching-enhancement workshops are regarded by the participants as helpful in improving their instructional skills. This view is supported by a significant increase in students' ratings of the instructors after they had taken the workshop.  相似文献

Brain potentials associated with the manipulation of conceptual fluency in a recognition memory paradigm were recorded. Enhanced fluency was associated with attenuation of the N400 and an increased rate of subjects' endorsing both studied and non-studied items as having been studied ("old" responses) in the recognition test. Differences were also found in latencies previously associated with post-retrieval processing, such that in the setting of enhanced fluency (1) non-studied items were associated with a positive wave from 800 to 1600 ms and (2) items endorsed as "new" were more positive than those endorsed as "old" from 1200 to 1600 ms. The effects on the N400 may be related to the impact of fluency on familiarity, whereas later processing may be involved in the attribution of fluency to prior experience.  相似文献

This study investigated whether feeding different wheat varieties to laying hens could influence colonization with the intestinal spirochaete Brachyspira intermedia. Fifty ISA-Brown laying hens were divided into two groups. One group were fed a laying-hen diet formulated with wheat variety Westonia, and one were fed the diet incorporating variety Stilleto. Each group was divided into 15 hens experimentally infected with B. intermedia and 10 uninfected controls. The 30 infected hens were housed in individual cages in one room, and the controls were similarly housed in another room. Following administration of cultures of B. intermedia strain HB60 by crop-tube over 3 days, cloacal swabs were taken for spirochaete culture every 3 to 4 days. The water content of caecal faeces, and egg production and body weight were measured weekly. The hens were killed after 4 weeks, the caeca cultured for spirochaetes and the viscosity of the ileal contents measured. A total of 48/120 (40%) of the excreta samples from infected hens fed Westonia contained B. intermedia, compared with 21/120 (17.5%) for Stiletto (P = 0.0002). The ileal viscosity of hens fed Westonia also was higher (P = 0.048), but viscosity was not clearly related to the non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) content of the wheats. Westonia had a slightly higher total NSP content than Stiletto, but the ratio of soluble to insoluble NSP was lower. Infected hens developed wetter excreta, but neither infection nor diet altered egg production. In conclusion, the wheat variety can influence colonization with B. intermedia, apparently through diet-related alterations in the intestinal microenvironment.  相似文献

Since previous studies showed that calcium uptake by synaptosomes from rodents declines with aging [30], the subsynaptosomal distribution of calcium was determined with the disruption method of Scott et al. [37]. Calcium uptake by the mitochondrial (digitonin-resistant) and non-mitochondrial (digitonin-labile) compartments, as well as total uptake, were determined at 2, 5 and 10 min. After a 10 min incubation under resting conditions (5 mM-KCl), total calcium uptake decreased at 10 months (−14.6%) and 30 months (−33.0%) of age; mitochondrial calcium uptake increased by 10 months (+11.2%) but declined by 30 months (−17.5%); the nonmitochondrial calcium compartment declined at 10 (−34.7%) and 30 (−43.4%) months when compared to the 3 month old control. With potassium depolarization (31 mM-KCl), total calcium uptake declined from 100% (3 months) to 73.8% (10 months) or 53.0% (30 months); mitochondrial calcium uptake declined from 100% (3 months) to 85.6% (10 months) or 68.4% (30 months); non-mitochondrial calcium uptake decreased at 10 (−34.3%) and 30 (−57.7%) months of age when compared to 3 months (100%). The deficits in calcium homeostasis are not due to changes in synaptosomal volumes or to diminished membrane potentials, as assessed by tetraphenylphosphonium ion accumulation. 3,4-Diaminopyridine partially reversed the alterations in total, mitochondrial and non-mitochondrial calcium uptake by synaptosomes from aged mice.  相似文献

Effects of chemical mediators of anaphylaxis on ciliary function   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We assessed the effects of selected chemical mediators of anaphylaxis on CBF in vitro. Ciliated epithelial cells were obtained from the trachea of conscious sheep with a cytology brush and suspended in a perfusion chamber containing KH. Ciliary activity was viewed microscopically and recorded on videotape for subsequent slow-motion analysis of CBF. Prostaglandin E1 (10(-8) M to 10(-6) M), prostaglandin E2 (10(-10) M to 10(-6) M), and leukotriene-C4 (10(-8) M) increased CBF between 7% and 33%. Histamine caused ciliostimulation only at the relatively high concentrations above 10(-5) M (7% increase in CBF), whereas prostaglandin F2 alpha (10(-10) M and 10(-6) M) was without effect. In no preparation was ciliary discoordination observed. These findings indicate that several chemical mediators of anaphylaxis stimulate CBF and that the previously described impairment of mucociliary transport in stable allergic asthma or antigen-induced bronchoconstriction is probably not caused by a primary alteration of ciliary function.  相似文献

Adult Long-Evans rats, exposed prenatally to 1 of 4 doses of cocaine (0.0,0.5,1.0, or 3.0 mg/kg iv), were tested on a 3-choice visual attention task with an olfactory distractor presented unpredictably on one third of the trials. The performance of all 3 cocaine-exposed groups was significantly more disrupted than that of controls by the presentation of distractors. Results demonstrate that prenatal cocaine exposure increases susceptibility to distractors, using a task specifically designed to measure this function. In addition, the present study revealed that individuals exposed to cocaine in utero exhibit greater performance disruption after an error than controls, in certain types of tasks. Both areas of dysfunction, impaired selective attention and impaired arousal regulation, have important functional consequences in humans, possibly affecting the school performance and social development of cocaine-exposed children.  相似文献

The mammalian spinal cord contains a locomotor central pattern generator (CPG) that can produce alternating rhythmic activity of flexor and extensor motoneurones in the absence of rhythmic input and proprioceptive feedback. During such fictive locomotor activity in decerebrate cats, spontaneous omissions of activity occur simultaneously in multiple agonist motoneurone pools for a number of cycles. During these 'deletions', antagonist motoneurone pools usually become tonically active but may also continue to be rhythmic. The rhythmic activity that re-emerges following a deletion is often not phase shifted. This suggests that some neuronal mechanism can maintain the locomotor period when motoneurone activity fails. To account for these observations, a simplified computational model of the spinal circuitry has been developed in which the locomotor CPG consists of two levels: a half-centre rhythm generator (RG) and a pattern formation (PF) network, with reciprocal inhibitory interactions between antagonist neural populations at each level. The model represents a network of interacting neural populations with single interneurones and motoneurones described in the Hodgkin-Huxley style. The model reproduces the range of locomotor periods and phase durations observed during real locomotion in adult cats and permits independent control of the level of motoneurone activity and of step cycle timing. By altering the excitability of neural populations within the PF network, the model can reproduce deletions in which motoneurone activity fails but the phase of locomotor oscillations is maintained. The model also suggests criteria for the functional identification of spinal interneurones involved in the mammalian locomotor pattern generation.  相似文献
