The nNOS/cGMP signal transducing system is involved in the cardiovascular responses induced by activation of NMDA receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla of cats

The potential neuroprotective effects of the novel nitro-derivate of aspirin (NCX4016) on permanent focal cerebral ischemia in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) was investigated. Reference compounds were acetylsalicilic acid (ASA) and FK506 (tacrolimus). Ten minutes after surgery, SHRs were randomly divided into four groups of ten, pharmacologically treated and sacrificed 24 h after treatment. Brains were removed and processed to measure infarct volume, 70 kDa heat shock protein (hsp70), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin (Vim) immunoreactivity (IR), and apoptosis using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay. NCX-4016 significantly reduced total infarct volume compared to ASA (-20%, P < 0.05), FK506 (-18%, P < 0.05) and vehicle treatment (-20%, P < 0.05). Experimental groups did not differ in hsp70-IR and GFAP-IR. Conversely, hyperplastic astrocytes, measured by Vim-IR, were significantly lower in NCX-4016 than in the vehicle group (-36%, P<0.01). TUNEL assay indicated a significantly lower degree of apoptosis in NCX-4016 group than vehicle in both the homolateral (-27%, P < 0.01) and contralateral hemisphere (-29%, P < 0.05). These findings indicate that NO release associated with aspirin confers neuroprotective effects against ischemic injury.     

Immunohistochemical localization of apolipoproteins A-I and B in human carotid arteries

Decreased plasma levels of apolipoprotein A-I (apo A-I) and increased plasma levels of apolipoprotein B (apo B) have been shown to correlate with increased risk of atherosclerosis. While many studies have investigated the plasma levels of these apolipoproteins with regard to their value as predictors of cardiovascular disease, comparatively little is known about their precise tissue localization in atherosclerotic plaques. The purpose of this study was to determine the tissue localization of apo A-I and apo B in atherosclerotic segments of human carotid arteries through the use of immunohistochemical techniques. With tissue samples obtained from surgery and autopsy, apo A-I and apo B were found to be present in atherosclerotic plaques and absent in normal arterial tissue. In the plaques, both apo A-I and apo B were found extracellularly, primarily in the lipid core, but also in connective tissue. In addition, both apo A-I and apo B were found intracellularly in foam cells. This similar intracellular and extracellular distribution of apo A-I and apo B was unexpected, in view of their differing associations with atherosclerosis.     

Phase-Field-Based Axisymmetric Lattice Boltzmann Method for Two-Phase Electro-Hydrodynamic Flows

In this work, a novel and simple phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann (LB) method is proposed for the axisymmetric two-phase electro-hydrodynamic flows. The present LB method is composed of three LB models, which are used to solve the axisymmetric Allen-Cahn equation for the phase field, the axisymmetric Poisson equation for the electric potential, and the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for the flow field. Compared with the previous LB models for the axisymmetric Poisson equation, which can be viewed as the solvers to the convection-diffusion equation, the present model is a genuine solver to the axisymmetric Poisson equation. To test the capacity of the LB method, the deformation of a single leaky or perfect dielectric drop under a uniform electric field is considered, and the effects of electric strength, conductivity ratio, and permittivity ratio are investigated in detail. It is found that the present numerical results are in good agreement with some available theoretical, numerical and/or experimental data.     

蝶腭,筛前神经及鼻甲联合手术治疗常年性变应性鼻炎

在鼻内窥镜下为４０例行蝶腭、筛前神经及鼻甲联合手术治疗常年性变应性鼻炎。结果：术后１月全部患者症状消失,显效１００％;术后１年显效３３例,占８２．５％;有效６例,占１５％,有效率为９７．５％。提示该方法可广泛阻滞鼻腔副交感神经来源,降低鼻粘膜感觉灵敏部位敏感性以及感觉—副交感神经反射,破坏喷嚏反射弧的传入通路,使鼻粘膜对外界刺激敏感性下降,血管扩张减轻,腺体分泌减少,对常年性变应性鼻炎有明显疗效。     

Mononucleosis syndrome and coincidental human herpesvirus-7 and Epstein-Barr virus infection

Two girls (a 5 year old and a 21 month old) experiencing mononucleosis syndrome with coincidental human herpesvirus (HHV)-7 and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections are described. One patient had primary HHV-7 infection and reactivated EBV infection. The other had primary HHV-7 and EBV infections. These cases indicated that HHV-7 is capable of inducing infectious mononucleosis-like illness. Multiple herpesvirus infection in one of the patients also suggests that interaction among herpesviruses can occur in vivo. The consequence of this interaction may have clinical implications.     

Glutamate receptors within the nucleus of solitary tract contribute to pancreatic secretion stimulated by intraduodenal hypertonic saline

High-speed counter-current chromatography （HSCCC） with a solvent system composed of ethyl acetate-n-buta- nol-water （2 ： 1 ： 3, V/V/V） was used to isolate and separate two C-glycosylflavones from Patrinia villosa Juss, a traditional Chinese medicine. The separation produced 42.9 mg isovitexin and 20.1 mg isoorientin with purities of 99.3% and 98.5%, respectively as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） in one step elution from 250 mg crude extract, and identification was performed by MS, ^1H NMR and ^13C NMR. It is the first report of discovering isovitexin and isoorientin from the plant of Patrinia genus.
