ObjectiveThis study investigated anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) and compensatory postural adjustments (CPAs) and their relationship in older adults during lateral postural perturbations.MethodsUnpredictable and predictable postural disturbances were induced by a swinging pendulum that impacted at the shoulder level of two groups of older adults, non-fallers (20) and fallers (20), and in a group of young control subjects (20). The electromyographic (EMG) activity of the postural muscles and the center of pressure (COP) displacement were recorded and quantified within the time intervals typical for APAs and CPAs.ResultsBoth groups of older adults (non-fallers and fallers) showed higher magnitude of EMG activity in the lateral muscles and increased COP displacement, particularly, during the CPAs time interval when compared to the young group. Older adults, however, were able to change the electrical activity of the muscles during the predictable task by generating APAs with similar magnitudes of those found in young subjects.ConclusionsCompensatory but not anticipatory adjustments are altered in older adults during predictable lateral postural perturbations.Significance: These findings provide new data on the role of APAs and CPAs in their relationship in older adults during external lateral perturbations and may advance current rehabilitative management strategies to improve balance control in older individuals. 相似文献

The acute phase response refers to a nonspecific and complex systemic reaction of the organism that occurs shortly after any tissue injury. The acute phase response is considered a part of the innate host defense system, which is responsible for the survival of the host during the critical early stages of attack, and in evolutionary terms, it precedes the acquired immune response. The purpose of this study was to determine serum protein concentrations, including the acute phase protein profile in agoutis (Dasyprocta azarae) in captivity, by means of sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Blood samples from 11 adult healthy animals (nine females and two males) were obtained. The serum proteinogram had 21 proteins with molecular weights ranging from 15 to 240 kD. The acute phase proteins identified were: ceruloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, haptoglobin, α-1-acid glycoprotein, and hemoglobin. IgA, IgG heavy and light chains, and nonnominal identified proteins of 240, 210, 140, 98, 78, 48, 35, 31, 23, and 15 kD were also identified. The determination of the acute phase protein concentrations is a useful method for the early detection of subclinical disease or changes in the healthy animal, with predictive information on the development of disease in the future. It is possible to standardize the reference values of the serum protein profile of agoutis, which can be used for diagnosis and prognosis, treatment and clinical follow-up of nutritional disorders, and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases that may affect these animals. 相似文献

Chronic exposure to Industrial Noise (IN), rich in Low Frequency Noise (LFN), causes systemic fibrotic transformation and sustained stress. Dental wear, significantly increased with exposure to LFN, affects the teeth particularly through the circumpulpar dentin. Our goal is to understand the consequences of IN exposure on the circumpulpar dentin of Wistar rats. 10 Wistar rats were exposed to IN for 4 months, according to an occupationally simulated time schedule and 10 animals were used as age-matched controls. The first and the second upper and lower molars of each animal were processed for observation by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was performed. In exposed animals FESEM showed a 2.0 to 6.0 μm-dense mineral band between dentin and the pulp with no regular continuity with the tubules. This structure had a few tubules where the odontoblasts processes could be observed embedded within the band and collagen fibers were trapped inside. EDS analysis revealed that it was hydroxyapatite similar to dentin, with a higher carbon content. FESEM results show that the band may be tertiary reparative dentin formed by odontoblast-like cells, but the increased amount of carbon (EDS) could mean that it is sclerotic dentin. IN should be acknowledge as a strong stimulus, able to cause an injury to odontoblasts and to the formation of reparative tertiary dentin, in a process that may accelerate the aging of the teeth, either by direct impact of acoustic pressure pulsations or by increased stress and dental wear. 相似文献

Background: In chronic periodontitis (CP), the gene polymorphism of interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) to 174C/G has been associated with the altered production of this cytokine. The aim of this pilot study is to compare the allelic and genotypic frequencies in patients with CP with control individuals without periodontitis (NP) and to measure the production of IL‐6 by whole blood cells stimulated with Porphyromonas gingivalis HmuY protein. Methods: DNA was isolated from peripheral blood cells of 49 patients with CP and 60 control individuals classified as NP, and genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction using sequence‐specific primers. Whole blood cells from 29 patients with CP and 30 control individuals were stimulated for 48 hours with HmuY, and IL‐6 levels were measured using enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The proportion of individuals carrying the G allele at position –174 of the IL‐6 gene was higher in the group with CP (85.7%) than in the normal control group (73.3%; P <0.03). P. gingivalis HmuY‐induced production of IL‐6 was higher in the group with CP (P <0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that P. gingivalis HmuY may be associated with increased IL‐6 production during CP. Furthermore, patients with periodontitis and individuals with higher HmuY‐induced production of IL‐6 show a high frequency of the G allele at position –174. 相似文献

Introduction. Hypovolemia from hemorrhage evokes protective compensatory reactions, such as the renin-angiotensin system, which interferes in the clearance function and can lead to ischemia. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of glibenclamide, a K+ATP channel blocker, on renal function and histology in rats in a state of hemorrhagic shock under sevoflurane anesthesia. Material and Methods. Twenty Wistar rats were randomized into two groups of 10 animals each (G1 and G2), only one of which (G2) received intravenous glibenclamide (1 μg.g?1), 60 min before bleeding was begun. Both groups were anesthetized with sevoflurane and kept on spontaneous respiration with oxygen-air, while being bled of 30% of volemia in three stages with 10 min intervals. There was an evaluation of renal function—sodium para-aminohippurate and iothalamate clearances, filtration fraction, renal blood flow, renal vascular resistance—and renal histology. Renal function attributes were evaluated at three moments: M1 and M2, coinciding with the first and third stages of bleeding; and M3, 30 min after M2, when the animals were subjected to bilateral nephrectomy before being sacrificed. Results. Significant differences were found in para-aminohippurate clearance, G1 < G2, and higher renal vascular resistance values were observed in G1. Histological examination showed the greater vulnerability of kidneys exposed to sevoflurane alone (G1) with higher scores of vascular and tubular dilatation. There were vascular congestion and tubular vacuolization only in G1. Necrosis and signs of tubular regeneration did not differ in both groups. Conclusion. Treatment with glibenclamide attenuated acutely the renal histological changes after hemorrhage in rats under sevoflurane anesthesia. 相似文献

High tissue levels of glycine (GLY) are the biochemical hallmark of nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), an inherited metabolic disease clinically characterized by severe neurological symptoms and brain abnormalities. Considering that the mechanisms underlying the neuropathology of this disease are not fully established, the present work investigated the in vivo effects of intracerebroventricular administration of GLY on important parameters of energy metabolism in cerebral cortex and striatum from young rats. Our results show that GLY reduced CO2 production using glucose as substrate and inhibited the activities of citrate synthase and isocitrate dehydrogenase in striatum, whereas no alterations of these parameters were verified in cerebral cortex 30 min after GLY injection. We also observed that GLY diminished the activities of complex IV in cerebral cortex and complex I–III in striatum at 30 min and inhibited complex I–III activity in striatum at 24 h after its injection. Furthermore, GLY reduced the activity of total and mitochondrial creatine kinase in both brain structures 30 min and 24 h after its administration. In contrast, the activity of Na+, K+-ATPase was not altered by GLY. Finally, the antioxidants N-acetylcysteine and creatine, and the NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801 attenuated or fully prevented the inhibitory effects of GLY on creatine kinase and respiratory complexes in cerebral cortex and striatum. Our data indicate that crucial pathways for energy production and intracellular energy transfer are severely compromised by GLY. It is proposed that bioenergetic impairment induced by GLY in vivo may contribute to the neurological dysfunction found in patients affected by NKH. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of resin-based restorations on the interpretation of digital and conventional radiographic images and to correlate the proposed diagnosis with decision-making. Class II cavities were prepared in one of the proximal surfaces of extracted human molars. Teeth were divided into five groups (n = 10) according to the restoratives used: Natural Flow (NF) and Filtek Supreme (FS); Filtek Flow (FF) and FS; Tetric Flow (TF) and FS; Protect Liner F (PLF) and FS; and FS alone. Bitewing radiographs were taken using conventional and digital systems. Subjective analysis was performed for each surface: no restoration; restored teeth; or restored teeth with gap. Based on the given diagnosis, clinical conduct was then indicated. Material radiopacity was determined according to ISO 4049. A Fisher exact test evaluated the influence of the restoratives on the diagnosis. Means were compared using ANOVA and the Games-Howell test. A Friedman test was used to analyze the influence of the systems on the diagnosis, and a binomial test was used to analyze the association between the presence of gaps and the decision to replace the restoration (P = 0.05). For each system, TF+FS was significantly associated with a high percentage of correct diagnoses. The opposite was the case for PLF+FS, which differed from all other groups. Radiographic systems presented similar behaviors, except for NF+FS. Apart from PLF, adequate radiopacity was observed. Diagnosis was influenced by restorative materials, regardless of the radiographic system used. The low radiopacity of PLF led to a greater number of erroneous diagnoses. Moreover, the decision-making process was influenced strongly by the given diagnosis. 相似文献
