We investigated the effects of oral L-glutamine (Gln) supplementation, associated or not with physical exercises, in control of glycemia, oxidative stress, and strength/power of knee muscles in elderly women. Physically active (n = 21) and sedentary (n = 23) elderly women aged 60 to 80 years were enrolled in the study. Plasma levels of D-fructosamine, insulin, reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione, iron, uric acid, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARs) (lipoperoxidation product), as well as knee extensor/flexor muscle torque peak and average power (isokinetic test), were assessed pre- and post-supplementation with Gln or placebo (30 days). Higher plasma D-fructosamine, insulin, and iron levels, and lower strength/power of knee muscles were found pre-supplementation in the NPE group than in the PE group. Post-supplementation, Gln subgroups showed higher levels of GSH, GSSG, and torque peak, besides lower D-fructosamine than pre-supplementation values. Higher muscle average power and plasma uric acid levels were reported in the PE + Gln group, whereas lower insulin levels were found in the NPE + Gln than pre-supplementation values. TBARs levels were diminished post-supplementation in all groups. Gln supplementation, mainly when associated with physical exercises, improves strength and power of knee muscles and glycemia control, besides boosting plasma antioxidant capacity of elderly women. 相似文献
ObjectiveIndividuals without private health insurance have less access to healthcare, therefore are more prone to experience poor health when compared to those who have. Segmentation is an approach to find homogenous groups of people with the purpose of tailoring services and products. In public policy, segmentation might be used to identify characteristics and needs of specific groups and deliver targeted programs and spare costs. We aim to identify and describe segments within the uninsured population to aid targeted policy actions and improve health.MethodsWe used secondary data collected from a representative, nationwide health survey (n=18,204). For the purpose of our analysis, we included data from individuals who answered “no” to the question: “Do you have private health insurance?” (n=12,134). Variables pertaining information on socio-demographic, health status, access and care were used. A multiple correspondence analysis was performed to find principal components followed by a hierarchical cluster.ResultsWe found three clusters. The first (54.12% of our sample) composed by a group of young, middle aged and professionally active individuals without health problems. The second (36.70%), a cluster of aging individuals composed especially by elderly women, either retired or fulfilling domestic tasks, with a long-term health problem. The last (9.17%) composed by elder people, with long-term health problem and scoring low in mental health related questions.ConclusionOur study found three clusters (profiles of individuals) among the uninsured. Ultimately, our findings aim to support policy makers to deliver customized actions to improve health and provide cost-effective policies. 相似文献

ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate how cold ischemia time (CIT) interferes with liver graft function in the first 7 days after surgery for Custodiol (HTK) preserved organs.MethodsThis retrospective observational study analyzed the medical records of 38 transplantation patients at Hospital Leforte Liberdade, São Paulo, in 2018. The study population was divided into 2 groups (group A, CIT < 8 hours; group B, CIT > 8 hours). Postoperative parameters—such as international normalized ratio, total bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), lactate dehydrogenase, lactate, creatinine, red blood cell transfusion, need for hemodialysis, use of vasoactive drugs, endotracheal intubation time, length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), and length of hospital stay—were compared.ResultsGroup A (CIT < 8 hours) presented less need for red blood cell transfusions (odds ratio 0.29; confidence interval 0.06-0.98; P = .04), had a shorter hospital stay (P = .024), and had lower levels of total bilirubin (P = .05) and GGT (P = .05) in the first 7 postoperative days. The other variables showed no statistically significant difference.ConclusionIn livers preserved with Custodiol, CIT > 8 hours generated higher levels of total bilirubin and GGT in the postoperative period, in addition to higher hospital costs; greater need for red blood cell transfusions; and longer hospitalization, including longer stays in the ICU. 相似文献
Although adolescents living on the street tend to have unprotected sex with many partners and substance abuse, little is known about this reality in Brazil. To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with risky sexual behavior among children and adolescents living on the street in Porto Alegre and Rio Grande. A cross-sectional study was carried out using the Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) sampling method to quickly and efficiently access populations of difficult access. Poisson regression with robust adjustment of variance was used in the multivariate analysis. The sample consisted of 231 participants aged 10–21 years. Most were male and aged 16- 21 years. More than half (66.7%) of the respondents did not have a school bond, and 64.5% did not live with the family. Half of the sample had been living on the street for at least four years, spending 15 h or more on the street. Most (86.6%) responded that they had already used illicit drugs in their lives, and unprotected sex prevalence was 61.9%. The variables independently associated with unprotected sex were years living on the street, hours spent on the street, having a steady partner, illicit drug use, and sexual intercourse without a condom under the influence of drugs. The high prevalence of unprotected sex points to the need for intervention policies for this population to prevent the main risk factors.
Aquaculture is important to the United States and the world''s fishery system. Both import and export markets for aquaculture products will expand and increase as research begins to remove physiologic and other animal husbandry barriers. Overfishing of wild stock will necessitate supplementation and replenishment through aquaculture. The aquaculture industry must have a better understanding of the impact of the "shrouded" public and animal health issues: technology ignorance, abuse, and neglect. Cross-pollination and cross-training of public health and aquaculture personnel in the effect of public health, animal health, and environmental health on aquaculture are also needed. Future aquaculture development programs require an integrated Gestalt public health approach to ensure that aquaculture does not cause unacceptable risks to public or environmental health and negate the potential economic and nutritional benefits of aquaculture. 相似文献
We have employed a COS cell expression cloning procedure to isolate a full length cDNA clone encoding a hagfish leukocyte-associated membrane protein (HLMP1). The protein, which is identified by a monoclonal antibody (JB3) generated in our laboratory, is present on the majority of hagfish leukocytes and is also expressed on erythrocytes. The cDNA clone contained an open reading frame encoding a 120 residue polypeptide which exhibits 33% amino acid sequence identity with the precursor protein of human CD59, a leukocyte-associated membrane protein which regulates the action of the complement membrane attack complex on homologous cells. CD59 belongs to a family of structurally related glycoproteins which includes the Ly-6 proteins expressed on mouse lymphocytes. In addition to significant overall sequence homology HLMP1 shows conservation of 8 key cysteine residues with members of the CD59/Ly-6 family. Comparison of the hagfish sequence with that of the mature human CD59 protein suggested a processed protein consisting of 74 amino acids associated with the cell membrane via a GPI anchor. The latter was confirmed by immuno-flow cytometry following treatment of transfected COS cells with phospholipase. Phylogenetic analysis and tissue distribution of this protein in the hagfish are consistent with HLMP1 being a homologue of CD59. A three-dimensional model of HLMP1, constructed using the NMR-determined structure for human CD59 as a template, indicated conservation of a core structure of five strands of beta-sheet and a short helix stabilised by four disulfide bonds. These findings, when taken together with our previous identification of C5a-like chemotactic activity in LPS-activated serum, provide indirect evidence for the existence of the terminal lytic complement pathway (C5 to C9) in these primitive vertebrates. 相似文献
