Age, menopausal status and DNA-content in endometrial adenocarcinoma

In a prospective study of 283 women with endometrial carcinoma, 29 of whom were premenopausal and 254 postmenopausal, the DNA content and S-phase rate were measured by flow cytometry. Over 90% of the tumors in premenopausal women were peri-diploid and the remaining tumors were tetraploid, whereas 23% of the tumors in post-menopausal women were grossly aneuploid (p less than 0.01). Similar differences were found between women younger or older than 50 years. The results indicate that the hormonal status and/or age are of importance for the development of genetically different forms of endometrial carcinomas, as judged from the DNA-distribution.     

Cost justifying a pharmacy residency program

Cost justification of a pharmacy residency training program was prepared. The contributions of the pharmacy residents were tabulated and compared with the cost of the program to the hospital. Contributions were determined by identifying the activities performed by residents that could be quantified in financial terms. The residents' activities that benefited the hospital included administrative support, completion of special projects, scheduling staff assignments, and coordinating education programs. Costs were derived from salaries, fringe benefits, and training expense. An output value analysis was performed by comparing the contributions of the residents to the institution with the cost of the training program. The contributions of the residents exceeded the costs of the training program by a ratio of 1.3 to 1.     

Superficial femoral vein transposition in Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome

Use of a superficial femoral vein in competent profunda vein transposition is appropriate in selected cases of Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome; this allows for improvement of venous insufficiency and relief of symptoms secondary to venous stasis.     

Needs as Expressed by Women after Breast Cancer Surgery in the Setting of a Short Hospital Stay

The aim of this study was to describe needs as expressed by a group of women after surgery for breast cancer in the setting of a short hospital stay. Ten days after surgery, 97 women answered an open-ended question about their perception of the care given. A content analysis inspired by the method of Grounded Theory was used. Satisfaction with the personal treatment and feelings of abandonment were identified as the two main themes. Expressed needs (n = 113) were classified in five categories: Trust, Information, Practical Assistance, Personal Treatment and Emotional Support, of which Trust appeared to be the core concept. In addition, time and space emerged as two dimensions that were interwoven with the categories of needs. The patients' perception of trust in the staff was interpreted as depending on whether the needs in the other categories were satisfied or not. It is hypothesized that, to fulfil the patients' need of trust, the patients have to be satisfied at least with information, practical assistance, personal treatment and emotional support. We consider that, in an organization with a high degree of continuity, when the patients are aware of the physician and nurse responsible, the possibilities for trust are increased, especially in short hospital stays.     

Tissue Distribution of 14C-Rifampicin I. Whole Body Autoradiography of Albino Mice

Abstract: Whole body autoradiography of albino mice 5, 20, 60 min., 4, 24 hrs and 4 days after a single intravenous injection of ¹⁴C-rifampicin showed that rifampicin and/or its metabolites were rapidly distributed into most organs. As early as 5 min. after the injection, the lung, myocardium, brown fat, salivary glands, gastrointestinal mucosa, pancreas, kidney and liver showed higher uptake than the blood. A blood-brain barrier was apparent. A very high uptake was initially observed in the liver. Most of the radioactivity had disappeared after 24 hrs, although slight activity was still seen in the liver and thyroid after 4 days. No other specific retention of toxicological interest was observed.     

Post-traumatic stress disorder (traumatic war neurosis) and concurrent psychiatric illness among Australian Vietnam veterans. A controlled study

Depression, anxiety, irritability with unpredictable explosions of aggressive behaviour, impulsivity, suicidal actions and substance abuse have been repeatedly observed among ex-servicemen from World War II in psychiatric treatment settings. In the most recent American Psychiatric Association classification of mental disorders the category of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was introduced, replacing the earlier Traumatic War Neurosis and the above cluster of symptoms were included as associated features of this disorder. Two recent uncontrolled studies on U.S. Vietnam veterans receiving psychiatric care supported the linkage of PTSD with these abnormalities. However, the present controlled study found these associated features occurred with equal frequencies among one group of psychiatrically hospitalised Australian Vietnam veterans with PTSD and another group not so afflicted. Reservations, then, should be harboured about ascribing all the presented psychopathology and behavioural abnormalities of ex-servicemen to the stress of their war service.
