Dermatomyositis in a patient with high grade papillary urothelial carcinoma of urinary bladder

Inflammatory myopathies like dermatomyositis are associated with increased incidence of malignancies. This association has been commonly reported with malignancies of ovaries, gastro‐intestinal tract, breast and non‐Hodgkin's lymphomas but occurrence of dermatomyositis with bladder cancer has been rarely reported. We report a patient with carcinoma bladder who developed dermatomyositis while being treated for the bladder cancer.     

Effects of a feed additive blend on broilers challenged with heat stress

ABSTRACT

We evaluated a blend of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), organic acids, and a polyphenol antioxidant on gut integrity. Eighty Ross Broilers were exposed to 20–22°C (control – normothermic) or to 35–39.5°C (heat stress) for eight hours a day for a period of 1 or 5 days. Birds were fed a standard diet, or a diet supplemented with the test blend. Thereafter, birds were euthanized, and intestinal sections were excised for morphological, morphometric and gene expression analyses. Blood samples were collected for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) determination. Heart and liver tissues were used to quantify the expression of heat shock proteins 60 and 70 (HSP60 and HSP70, respectively) and inhibitor of kappa light chain gene enhancer in B cells alpha (IKBA). The jejunum was the most sensitive intestinal section, where heat stress modulated the expression of HSP70, of the inflammatory markers IKBA, interleukin 8 (IL-8), interferon gamma (IFNγ), and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). Moreover, expression of tight junctions (CLDN1, ZO1 and ZO2) and nutrient transporters (PEPT1 and EAAT3) was modulated especially in the jejunum. In conclusion, the feed additive blend protected intestines during heat stress from the decrease in villus height and crypt depth, and from the increase in villus width. Especially in the jejunum, heat stress played an important role by modulating oxidative stress and inflammation, impairing gut integrity and nutrient transport, and such deleterious effects were alleviated by the feed additive blend.

Micromechanical properties of demineralized dentin collagen with and without adhesive infiltration

In a previous study, we reported the upper limit of Young's modulus of the unprotected protein at the dentin/adhesive interface to be 2 GPa. In this study, to obtain a more exact value of the moduli of the components at the d/a interface, we used demineralized dentin collagen with and without adhesive infiltration. The prepared samples were analyzed using micro-Raman spectroscopy (micro RS) and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM). Using an Olympus UH3 SAM (Olympus Co., Tokyo), measurements were recorded with a 400 MHz burst mode lens (120 degrees aperture angle; nominal lateral resolution, 2.5 microm). A series of calibration curves were prepared using the relationship between the ultrasonically measured elastic moduli of a set of known materials and their SAM response. Finally, both the bulk and bar wave elastic moduli were computed for a set of 13 materials, including polymers, ceramics, and metals. These provided the rationale for using extensional wave measurements of the elastic moduli as the basis for extrapolation of the 400 MHz SAM data to obtain Young's moduli for the samples: E = 1.76 +/- 0.00 GPa for the collagen alone; E = 1.84 +/- 0.65 GPa for the collagen infiltrated with adhesive; E = 3.4 +/- 1.00 GPa for the adhesive infiltrate.     

Fully automatic quantification of microarray image data

DNA microarrays are now widely used to measure expression levels and DNA copy number in biological samples. Ratios of relative abundance of nucleic acids are derived from images of regular arrays of spots containing target genetic material to which fluorescently labeled samples are hybridized. Whereas there are a number of methods in use for the quantification of images, many of the software systems in wide use either encourage or require extensive human interaction at the level of individual spots on arrays. We present a fully automatic system for microarray image quantification. The system automatically locates both subarray grids and individual spots, requiring no user identification of any image coordinates. Ratios are computed based on explicit segmentation of each spot. On a typical image of 6000 spots, the entire process takes less than 20 sec. We present a quantitative assessment of performance on multiple replicates of genome-wide array-based comparative genomic hybridization experiments. By explicitly identifying the pixels in each spot, the system yields more accurate estimates of ratios than systems assuming spot circularity. The software, called, runs on Windows platforms and is available free of charge for academic use.     

A new autosomal recessive syndrome of characteristic facies, joint contractures, skeletal abnormalities, and normal development: second report with further clinical delineation

We describe a girl of Pakistani origin, born to consanguineous parents, with a multiple congenital anomaly (MCA) syndrome. This is the second report confirming an apparently new autosomal recessive syndrome reported earlier by van den Ende et al in 1992. The hallmarks of this MCA syndrome include characteristic facies with blepharophimosis, narrow, beaked nose, hypoplastic maxilla with or without cleft palate and everted lower lip, arachnodactyly, self-limiting congenital joint contractures, peculiar skeletal abnormalities, and normal growth and development. Further clinical and radiological delineation of the syndrome in this report suggests that the term “Marden-Walker-like syndrome without psychomotor retardation”, used in the first report to describe this condition, does not accurately reflect its clinical picture. The overall prognosis in this syndrome seems good.
