Supraacetabular insufficiency fractures

Insufficiency fractures in the supraacetabular region were identified in five women, aged 55-83 years. Factors contributing to the diminished resistance of their bones included postmenopausal osteoporosis, steroid therapy, radiation therapy, and rheumatoid arthritis. The supraacetabular fractures were seen on routine radiographs as hazy bands of sclerosis located immediately above and parallel to the acetabular roof. All five patients had additional fractures in the spine or pelvis. Supraacetabular insufficiency fractures may be an unsuspected cause of hip pain, especially in older women.     

Ferromagnetic materials in patients: detection before MR imaging

A number of surgical clips and other metallic materials embedded within patients have ferromagnetic properties that present a potential hazard when in the strong fields associated with magnetic resonance imaging. Several types of magnetometers and metal detectors were investigated as possible pre-imaging screening devices. The sensitivities and costs of these devices are given.

Antinociceptive properties of chloromaleinimides and their sulphonyl derivatives

This report describes the synthesis of new cyclic imides obtained from the reaction between aniline and dichloromaleic anhydride with further chlorosulphonation as well as the reaction between different amines and 4-methoxyphenol for the synthesis of imidobenzenesulphonyl derivatives. These compounds were tested as antinociceptive agents using the writhing test on mice. Some compounds, when intraperitoneally injected, proved to be potent and dose-related antinociceptives, being several times more active than many known reference drugs.     

Pharmacological and phytochemical investigations of different parts of Calophyllum brasiliense (Clusiaceae)

Continuing our search for antinociceptive agents from natural sources, this study analyzed the antinociceptive effects of some fractions obtained from different parts (roots, flowers and fruits) of Calophyllum brasiliense, a Brazilian medicinal plant used to treat several diseases, including inflammation and pain. For this purpose, the writhing and formalin induced-pain models in mice were used. We also analyzed the chemical composition of these different parts and tested two pure compounds isolated from chloroform fraction (roots) identified as friedelin (1) and 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone (3), by direct comparison with authentic samples. The results showed that some fractions and both compounds exhibited considerable antinociception properties, particularly against the writhing test, and that these are more potent than acetyl salicylic acid and acetaminophen, two reference drugs used here for comparison.
