OBJECTIVE: To elucidate which components of peer norms influence the process of sexual initiation for young adolescents. Design. Prospective cohort study. Setting. Fourteen elementary and middle schools in an urban public school district. Participants. The 1389 sixth-grade students who completed the questionnaire at the beginning (time 1) and at the end (time 2) of the school year comprise the study sample. Mean age at time 1 was 11.7 years. RESULTS: Of students entering the sixth grade, 30% (n = 416) reported having already initiated sexual intercourse, 5% (n = 74) reported initiating sexual intercourse during the sixth-grade school year (initiated group), and 63% (n = 873) reported not having initiated sexual intercourse by the end of the sixth-grade school year (never group). Demographic comparisons revealed that students in the initiated group were significantly more likely than students in the never group to be older (11.9 years vs 11.6 years), male (58% vs 37%), African-American (70% vs 51%), attending a poorer school (87% vs 85%), and living in an area with a high proportion of single-parent families (45% vs 41%). Self-reports and reports of peers' participation in nonsexual risk behaviors were more common for students in the initiated group. Students in the initiated group were more likely than students in the never group to perceive: 1) a high prevalence of sexual initiation among peers; 2) social gains associated with early sexual intercourse; and 3) younger age of peers' sexual initiation. Students in the never group were more likely to believe that sexually-experienced 12-year-old boys would be negatively stigmatized compared with students in the initiated group. Three predictive models were developed to test the relationship between peer norms and the process of initiation. These models demonstrate that the strongest predictor of sexual initiation in sixth grade is having high intention to do so at the beginning of sixth grade. The strongest predictor of high intention is belief that most friends have already had sexual intercourse. Perceptions of social gain and stigma for sexually-experienced 12-year-old boys act independently of intention to decrease risk of early sexual initiation. CONCLUSION: Early sexual intercourse is not an unplanned experience for many teens. Decisions about initiation are strongly bound to social context with peers playing an important role in creating a sense of normative behavior. Specific components of peer norms impact the process of sexual initiation in both positive and negative ways. Interventions aimed at delaying the onset of sexual initiation need to focus on cohort norms as well as on an individual's perceptions and behaviors.  相似文献

Several evidences support the hypothesis that central catecholamines may play a significant role in the production and/or maintenance of different alterations that characterize portal hypertension. The aim of the present work was to study the possible modifications in norepinephrine (NE) metabolism in several telencephalic and diencephalic areas rich in NE in experimental prehepatic portal hypertension. NE uptake was studied as an index of NE metabolism. The experiments were carried out in vitro in encephalic areas and nuclei, obtained according to the punch-out technique. Results indicated that portal hypertensive rats showed an enhancement of NE uptake in olfactory bulb (OB), preoptic area (PA), and supraoptic, periventricular, paraventricular, and arcuate nuclei (SON, PeVN, PaVN, and AN, respectively) compared to sham-operated rats. However, no modifications on NE uptake was observed in the median eminence (ME). Present results suggest that the changes observed in central NE uptake may be related to the development and/or maintenance of the portal hypertensive state.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Five cases of scintigraphic imaging of haemostatic and thromboembolic processes after injection of autologous 111In-labelled platelets are presented. The site of a liver puncture, atherosclerotic plaques in the abdominal aorta, deep vein thrombi, pulmonary embolism and the tip of an indwelling venous catheter could be visualized. Activity measurements corresponding to atherosclerotic plaques suggest that an increased sensitivity of this method may be achieved by extending the investigation period to 4–5 days after injection of 111In platelets.  相似文献

In 224 patients, renal stones were removed from the urinary tract using either direct extraction with a basket or forceps (59 patients), ultrasonic lithotripsy (164 patients), or infusion chemotherapy (one patient). Residual stone fragments were present more frequently in patients treated with ultrasonic lithotripsy (27%) than with direct extraction (5%). Other complications included hemorrhage (eight patients), catheter dislodgement (four patients), large amounts of urine extravasation (three patients), glycine ascites (three patients), infection (two patients), pneumothorax (one patient), and a prolonged ileus (one patient). More complications occurred among the first 50 patients than the last 50 patients, even though more difficult cases, including patients with staghorn calculi, were accepted during the latter period. Although a learning curve exists, complications can be minimized by attempting to treat more favorable cases during the initial experience.  相似文献

To investigate the antiulcer and antiinflammatory activities of the essential oil from Casearia sylvestris leaves (EOCS) the following tests were used: rat paw edema, granulomatous tissue test, vascular permeability, writhing test, gastric ulcer stress-induced and evaluation of gastric secretion (pylorus ligation test). The total yield of EOCS was 2.5% with LD50 of 1100 mg/kg in mouse. The major compounds identified using gas chromatography were caryophyllene, thujopsene, alfa-humulene, beta-acoradiene, germacrene-d, bicyclogermacrene, calamenene, germacrene B, spathulenol and globulol. The EOCS orally administered to the rats at 125 mg/kg resulted 36% of inhibition in carrageenan-induced edema in the rat paw assay (p<0.05, Student's t-test). However, both rat paw edema dextran-induced and vascular permeability assay using histamine showed no significant inhibition. Mice submitted to the writhing test using acetic acid presented 58% and 56% of inhibition in writhes with EOCS and indomethacin, respectively. Furthermore, EOCS inhibited 90% of stress-induced gastric ulcer, while cimetidine inhibited 70% (p<0.05, Student's t-test). The volume of gastric secretion in the group treated with EOCS was greater than the group treated with cimetidine. The EOCS also showed no changes related to H+ levels in the gastric secretion. With the overall results obtained in this study the authors suggest an anti-inflammatory activity for the EOCS of Casearia sylvestris beyond its anti-ulcer activity.  相似文献

Antioxidant role of heme oxygenase-1 in prehepatic portal hypertensive rats   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
AIM: To study the effect of bilirubin on the oxidative liver status and the activity and expression of heme oxy-genase-1 (HO-1) in rat liver injury induced by prehepatic portal hypertension. METHODS: Wistar male rats, weighing 200-250 g, were divided at random into two groups: one group with prehepatic portal hypertension (PH) induced by regulated prehepatic portal vein ligation (PPVL) and the other group corresponded to sham operated rats. Portal pressure, oxidative stress parameters, antioxidant enzymes, HO-1 activity and expression and hepatic sinusoidal va-sodilatation were measured. RESULTS: In PPVL rats oxidative stress was evidenced by a marked increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) content and a decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. The activities of liver antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were also diminished while activity and expression of HO-1 were enhanced. Administration of bilirubin (5μmol/kg body weight) 24 h before the end of the experiment entirely prevented all these effects. Pretreatment with Sn-pro-toporphyrin IX (Sn-PPIX) (100μg/kg body weight, i.p.), a potent inhibitor of HO, completely abolished the oxidative stress and provoked a slight decrease in liver GSH levels as well as an increase in lipid peroxidation. Besides, carbon monoxide, another heme catabolic product, induced a significant increase in sinusoidal hepatic areas in PPVL group. Pretreatment of PPVL rats with Sn-PPIX totally prevented this effect. CONCLUSION: These results suggest a beneficial role of HO-1 overexpression in prehepatic portal hypertensive rats.  相似文献

Crataegus oxyacantha, a plant of the Rosaceae family also known “English hawthorn, haw, maybush, or whitethorn,” has long been used for medicinal purposes such as digestive disorders, hyperlipidemia, dyspnea, inducing diuresis, and preventing kidney stones. However, the predominant use of this plant has been to treat cardiovascular disorders. Due to a lack of studies on the genotoxicity of C. oxyacantha, this investigation was undertaken to determine whether its fruit extract exerts cytotoxic, genotoxic, or clastogenic/aneugenic effects in leukocytes and HepG2 (liver hepatocellular carcinoma) cultured human cells, or mutagenic effects in TA100 and TA98 strains of Salmonella typhimurium bacterium. Genotoxicity analysis showed that the extract produced no marked genotoxic effects at concentrations of 2.5 or 5 µg/ml in either cell type; however, at concentrations of 10 µg/ml or higher significant DNA damage was detected. The micronucleus test also demonstrated that concentrations of 10 µg/ml or higher produced clastogenic/aneugenic responses. In the Ames test, the extract induced mutagenic effects in TA98 strain of S. typhimurium with metabolic activation at all tested concentrations (2.5 to 500 µg/ml). Data indicate that, under certain experimental conditions, the fruit extract of C. oxyacantha exerts genotoxic and clastogenic/aneugenic effects in cultured human cells, and with metabolism mutagenicity occurs in bacteria cells.  相似文献
