Degenerative changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) associated with aging can affect mandibular shape and reduce growth potential when stimulated by functional appliance therapy. This study was designed to evaluate the morphological changes in the mandibles of male mice associated with aging and biomechanical stimulus. Every 3 days over the course of 1 month, the lower incisors were trimmed by 1 mm to induce mandibular advancement (MA) when the animal was feeding. The left mandibles of the 23 experimental and 27 control animals were subsequently dissected, and digital images were obtained to analyze nine linear/angular measurements. Because mandibular morphology depends on the maintenance of condylar cartilage, the surfaces of the condylar cartilage and the ascending ramus of the mandible were also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The linear measurements of the mandible showed changes according to age in the control group and a growth response in the mandibular condyle in 7‐ and 15‐month‐old mice after MA. Moreover, SEM analysis revealed depressions in the anterior region of the condylar cartilage and inclined vascular grooves in the ascending ramus in the 7‐ and 15‐month‐old experimental mice. Although the growth potential is reduced in mice after 6 months of age, the results showed that continuous growth of the mandible occurs after maturation, except in the condyle, and that biomechanical stimulus of the TMJ of male mice leads to condylar growth. Litomosoides chagasfilhoi is a filariid nematode parasite of the abdominal cavity of the wild rodent Akodon cursor (Winge, 1887), that has been described and used in Brazil as a new model for human filariasis. The fine structure of the intestine of this nematode was analyzed based on observations made by light and transmission electron microscopies of serial sections along the body. Cytochemical analysis was carried out to investigate the composition of the intestinal wall. This structure consisted of a basal lamina and an epithelium of variable thickness, composed of cells that have an irregular shape. The cytoplasm of intestinal cells contains few organelles: vacuoles, lysosomal bodies, spheroid bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, and many large lipid droplets. In the anterior portion of the intestine, the lysosomal bodies, spheroid bodies, and vacuoles presented positive reaction for acid phosphatase, and carbohydrates were detected in lysosomal bodies. The midbody and posterior regions presented less organelles and lipid droplets, and nuclei were more abundant. Residues of l-fucose were detected by Ulex europaeus lectin binding in the midbody sections. Basic proteins were associated to lipid droplets, in the posterior region. In the whole extension of the intestine, carbohydrates were detected on tight junctions. These results indicate that the metabolized material in the epithelium can contribute to the microfilariae development and also probably can be involved with the excretory/secretory mechanism of these nematodes.  相似文献

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The increase in wall thickness of weakened roots using composite resins may increase the root resistance to fracture. However, little is known about the recently developed methods for intraradicular reinforcement of weakened roots. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the fracture resistance of experimentally weakened roots reinforced with composite resins, compared with conventional systems that use cast and prefabricated posts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight maxillary incisors were divided into 6 groups (n = 8). The control group (C) used a conventionally prepared root canal filled with cast CuAl posts. Experimental groups had the root canals overprepared to weaken them and were restored as follows: CP, cast CuAl posts; LT, light-transmitting polymerization post (Luminex) + Tetric Ceram resin + prefabricated titanium post (PTP); LF, Luminex posts + Filtek Supreme resin + PTP; LZ, Luminex posts + Z100 resin + PTP; and LR, Luminex posts + Renew resin + PTP. All posts were cemented with a resin luting agent (C & B Cement). Specimens were subjected to compressive load (N) until fracture. Data were submitted to 1-way analysis of variance and the Dunnett test (alpha = .05). RESULTS: There was significant difference (P < .01) between the conventionally prepared specimens and those filled with a cast post (C, 447.8 +/- 167.9) and the overprepared specimens and those filled with a cast post (CP, 212.8 +/- 62.4). No significant differences were found among the control specimens (447.8 +/- 167.9) and the weakened-roots filled with Luminex and composite resins LT (520.9 +/- 173.1), LF (479.9 +/- 214.9), LZ (391.6 +/- 173.6), and LR (333.0 +/- 112.2). CONCLUSION: The use of composite resins in root canals reinforced the weakened roots during fracture resistance testing.  相似文献

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Controversy exists concerning the preferred cavity design for posterior ceramic restorations to improve their resistance to fracture under occlusal load. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the resistance to fracture of leucite-reinforced ceramic restorations placed on molars with different cavity preparation designs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety noncarious molars were selected, stored in 0.2% thymol solution, and divided into 9 groups (n = 10): IT, intact teeth; CsI, conservative inlay; ExI, extensive inlay; CsO/mb, conservative onlay with mesio-buccal cusp coverage; ExO/mb, entensive onlay with mesio-buccal cusp coverage; CsO/b, conservative onlay with buccal cusp coverage; ExO/b, entensive onlay with buccal cusp coverage; CsO/t, conservative onlay with total cusp coverage; ExO/t, extensive onlay with total cusp coverage. Teeth were restored with a Leucite-reinforced ceramic (Cergogold). The fracture resistance (N) was assessed under compressive load in a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed with 1-way and 2-way analyses of variance, followed by the Tukey HSD test (alpha = .05). Fracture modes were recorded, based on the degree of tooth structure and restoration damage. RESULTS: One-way analysis showed that intact teeth had the highest fracture resistance values. Two-way analyses showed no significant differences for the isthmus extention factor, but showed a significant difference for the preparation design type of fracture (P = .03), and also for the interaction between both factors (P = .013). The fracture mode observed in all groups tended to involve only restorations. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it was observed that cuspal coverage does not increase fracture resistance of the posterior tooth-restoration complex restored with leucite-reinforced ceramics.  相似文献

This article reviews cases of mandibular fractures treated at the Service of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Hospital Complex of Mandaqui (SUS/SP), which is a reference hospital complex for trauma in the northern area of the city of S?o Paulo, Brazil. Ninety-eight patients with mandibular fractures were seen at the hospital between January and December, 2001. Out of this total, 91 cases whose files were deemed adequate in terms of data accuracy and completeness were reviewed. The following data were collected for the study: age, gender, etiology, anatomical fracture site, treatment modality, relation to other facial bone fractures, hospitalization time and posttrauma complications. Motorcycle accident was the major cause of mandibular fractures followed by physical aggression and height fall. The mandibular anatomical sites of higher fracture incidence were: body, symphysis and condyle. The most commonly performed treatment modes were conservative approach or open reduction and intraosseous fixation. In conclusion, motorcycle accidents were associated with a larger number of facial fractures and most predominantly affect 21-30 year-old males. On the average, motor vehicle accident victims had more (and more severe) fractures than physical aggression victims. Complications were mostly associated with angle fractures and hospitalization period. Polytraumatized patients presented greater morbidity for complications.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Although endometrial polyps likely originate from reserve cells in the basal layer, the underlying biology is not fully understood. One protein that plays an important role in regulating epithelial proliferation and differentiation is the 63-kd membrane protein (p63), which is also a marker of basal and reserve cells in the female genital tract. Our objective was to determine whether p63 is expressed differently in postmenopausal endometrial polyps than in the adjacent endometrium. DESIGN: In this study, 36 specimens of endometrial polyps and 36 samples of the adjacent endometrium were obtained from postmenopausal women through hysteroscopic surgery performed in a tertiary-care university hospital. Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate the expression of p63 in all samples. RESULTS: The majority of endometrial polyp samples (94.4%) presented nuclear immunostaining for p63, whereas only 5.6% of adjacent endometrium samples were positive for p63 (P < 0.0001). Distribution of p63 immunostaining in the endometrial polyp samples was homogeneous. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence that a basal cell immunophenotype is maintained in the endometrial polyps seen in postmenopausal women, suggesting that p63 plays a role in the pathogenesis of such polyps.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to consider the therapeutic decision whether to use advanced surgery or short implants based on data concerning the use of these implants found in follow-up studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MEDLINE database was consulted for follow-up studies published between the years 1980 and 2004. For those studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, data concerning the number of implants 7, 8.5, or 10 mm long placed and lost, the time at which the failure occurred, and related risk factors were gathered for 33 studies arranged in tables and subjected to analysis. The studies included 16,344 implant placements with 786 failures (4.8%). Implants were analyzed according to the time of failure (i.e., before or after prosthesis seating) and risk factors implicated in the failures. RESULTS: The total rate of failures was 4.8%. Implants 3.75 mm wide and 7 mm long failed at a rate of 9.7%, compared to 6.3% for 3.75 x 10-mm implants. It was found that 54.9% of failures occurred before the prosthesis connection. Finally, 66.7% of all failures were attributed to poor bone quality, 45.4% to the location (maxilla or mandible), 27.2% to occlusal overload, 24.2% to location within the jaw, and 15.1% to infections (an implant could be associated with multiple risk factors). DISCUSSION: The analysis revealed that among the risk factors, poor bone quality in association with short implants seemed to be relevant to failure. The use of implants 4 mm in diameter appeared to minimize failure in these situations. The 3.75 x 7-mm implant presented the highest failure rate (9.7%) of 1894 implants analyzed (excluding implant designs with higher failure rates but few total implants). CONCLUSION: Short implants should be considered as an alternative to advanced bone augmentation surgeries, since surgeries can involve higher morbidity, require extended clinical periods, and involve higher costs to the patient.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of a non-rinse conditioner (NRC) associated with two adhesive systems, Prime & Bond NT and Prime & Bond 2.1. The study also evaluated a self-etching adhesive, comparing it with the 37% phosphoric acid effects related to the regularity and infiltration depth of adhesives in human tooth enamel via observation using Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). Fifteen third molars were longitudinally sectioned into four parts by means of a mesio-distal cut and facio-lingual cut. All pieces were flattened with silicon carbide paper, randomly separated and divided into five groups where the enamel surfaces were treated with different materials according to the manufacturers' instructions as follows: Group 1-Prime & Bond NT (Dentsply); Group 2-37% phosphoric acid + Prime & Bond NT; Group 3-Non-Rinse Conditioner (Dentsply) + Prime & Bond NT; Group 4-NRC + Prime & Bond 2.1 (Dentsply); Group 5-Prompt L-Pop (3M ESPE). All teeth were covered with Dyract AP (Dentsply). Specimens were decalcified, metalized and the inner portions of Dyract were observed in SEM and evaluated by calibrated examiners to evaluate resin penetration on enamel. Resin penetration was ranked from 0 = no penetration, to 3 = maximum penetration. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (p<0.05) showed only three statistically homogeneous groups: {1}, {2,3} and {4,5}. The authors concluded that Prime & Bond NT showed the lowest penetration, NRC showed similar effects compared to phosphoric acid when associated with Prime & Bond NT, and concluded that Prompt L-Pop showed similar effects to NRC, which was associated with Prime & Bond 2.1.  相似文献

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Er:YAG laser irradiation used to clean dentinal walls on the apical sealing of root canals filled with different types of sealers.

Background Data:

Laser application to the dentinal walls removed debris, rendering the root canals free of smear layers and leaving the dentinal canaliculi open.

Methods:

Sixty-four maxillary canines obtained from laboratory files were instrumented with K-files (Dentsply, Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) using the crown-down technique, and irrigated with a 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution. The specimens were divided into two groups of 32 teeth each. In group I, the teeth were instrumented and irrigated with sodium hypochlorite solution, and divided into four subgroups to be sealed with the different materials (Endofill, N-Rickert, Sealapex and Sealer 26). In group II, the root canals were subjected to Er:YAG laser irradiation (200 mJ, 7 Hz and 60 J total energy), followed by root canal sealing as in group I.

Results:

The data showed lower levels of apical microleakage in the teeth filled with N-Rickert, Sealapex and Sealer 26 cements than in those sealed with Endofill (p < 0.01). No significant difference in microleakage was observed between teeth irrigated only with 0.5% sodium hypochlorite and those submitted to Er:YAG laser application (p > 0.05).

Conclusions:

The Er:YAG laser irradiation applied to the root canal walls was not able to prevent apical microleakage.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: The present study was conducted to determine whether the urinary levels of excreted enzymes, gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate (AST) and alanine aminotransferases (ALT), can efficiently indicate, within 24 h, an acute nephrotoxicity due to an overdose of paracetamol (PAR). METHODS: A baseline urine was collected from the experimental group. Thereafter, blood collected from the orbital sinus (1.0 ml) and paracetamol (650 mg/kg of body weight) was administered by gavage. After the drug administration, animals were returned to the metabolic cages and then urine was collected in the next 22 h. Blood and urine collection was performed at time 0+24 h (T(24)), as well as at times 48 and 72 h (T(48) and T(72)). After the last urine and blood collection, the rats were killed and the kidneys removed and prepared for histological examination. Plasma creatinine and urinary levels of creatinine (to determinate glomerular filtration rate-GFR), GGT, ALP, LDH, ALT and AST were measured. Kidney tissues were stained with hematoxylin and eosin stain for histological assessment. RESULTS: Urinary levels of GGT, ALP and LDH enzymes were significantly higher (P<0.05) at T(24) when compared to the levels at T(0) and returned to basal levels at T(48) and T(72). The number of urinary epithelial cells at T(24) was significantly higher when compared to the control time (T(0)) (P<0.001). The GFR was significantly reduced 24, 48 and 72 h after the drug administration. CONCLUSION: The number of urinary epithelial cells and urinary enzymes levels are a simple and low cost procedure that is available and can help in the detection of renal acute lesions.  相似文献
