Emerging evidence indicates that museum object handling sessions offer short-term benefits to healthcare participants. This study aimed to further understand psychological and social aspects of object handling in mental health inpatients. Older adults (N = 42) from a psychiatric inpatient ward with diagnoses of depression or anxiety took part in a series of object handling group sessions with 5–12 participants per group. Session audio recordings were subjected to thematic analysis. Five main themes were identified: ‘responding to object focused questions’, ‘learning about objects and from each other’, ‘enjoyment, enrichment through touch and privilege’, ‘memories, personal associations and identity’ and ‘imagination and storytelling’. The first four were congruent with literature associated with positive wellbeing and engagement outcomes but the fifth was a new finding for group contexts. Limitations include the relatively small sample and variable week-to-week group attendance. Audio recordings did not provide information on non-verbal communication and how objects were handled. Future studies should control for attendance and examine effects of multiple sessions over time, ideally with video recording. This study offers preliminary support for museum object handling as a group intervention in mental health care with potential to develop therapeutic aspects of the sessions. Findings indicate that object handling is a novel yet effective intervention with potential for conferring additional advantages by conducting sessions in group settings. 相似文献

The acetylation of histone and non-histone proteins controls a great deal of cellular functions, thereby affecting the entire organism, including the brain. Acetylation modifications are mediated through histone acetyltransferases (HAT) and deacetylases (HDAC), and the balance of these enzymes regulates neuronal homeostasis, maintaining the pre-existing acetyl marks responsible for the global chromatin structure, as well as regulating specific dynamic acetyl marks that respond to changes and facilitate neurons to encode and strengthen long-term events in the brain circuitry (e.g., memory formation). Unfortunately, the dysfunction of these finely-tuned regulations might lead to pathological conditions, and the deregulation of the HAT/HDAC balance has been implicated in neurological disorders. During the last decade, research has focused on HDAC inhibitors that induce a histone hyperacetylated state to compensate acetylation deficits. The use of these inhibitors as a therapeutic option was efficient in several animal models of neurological disorders. The elaboration of new cell-permeant HAT activators opens a new era of research on acetylation regulation. Although pathological animal models have not been tested yet, HAT activator molecules have already proven to be beneficial in ameliorating brain functions associated with learning and memory, and adult neurogenesis in wild-type animals. Purpose:To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the national lockdown on the demographic and clinical profile of patients presenting with ocular trauma.Methods:In this retrospective, hospital-based, comparative analysis, patients presenting to the emergency department with ocular trauma in the following COVID-19 period (March 25, 2020 to July 31, 2020) were compared with patients in the pre-COVID-19 period (March 25, 2019 to July 31, 2019).Results:Overall, 242 patients (COVID-19 period: 71 and pre-COVID-19 period: 171) presented with ocular trauma. The mean age of the patients in COVID-19 and pre-COVID-19 periods were 26.7 ± 17.3 and 34.1 ± 20.3 years, respectively (P = 0.008). A majority of patients (68.6%) in both groups were from the rural background. Home-related injuries were common in the COVID-19 period (78.8%) as compared to pre-COVID-19 period (36.4%) (P < 0.0001). Iron particles (29.5%) were the common inflicting agents in the COVID-19 period while it was plant leaves (25.5%) in the pre-COVID-19 period. The most common ocular diagnosis was open globe injury (40.8%) in the COVID-19 period and microbial keratitis (47.9%) in the pre-COVID-19 period. Surgical intervention was required in 46.4% of patients in the COVID-19 period and 32.1% of patients in the pre-COVID-19 period (P = 0.034).Conclusion:During the COVID-19 period, there was a significant decline in the number of patients presenting with ocular trauma. In this period, a majority of patients sustained ocular trauma in home-settings. About half the patients required surgical intervention which was most commonly rendered in the form of primary wound repair. 相似文献

Nickel oxide nanoparticles having a mean particle size of 19.5 nm were synthesized by a simple chemical method. Those nanoparticles exhibited a spin glass like behaviour at a temperature around 9 K. The samples showed electronic conduction arising out of small polaron hopping between the Ni2+ and Ni3+ species present in the material. A large magnetodielectric parameter with a maximum value of 52.2% was observed in the sample at room temperature which resulted from the Maxwell–Wagner polarization effect. This was explained as arising due to a large negative magnetoresistance caused by spin polarized electron hopping between Ni2+ and Ni3+ sites with the consequential formation of space charge polarization at the interfaces of the NiO nanoparticles. This was substantiated by direct measurement of magnetoresistance of the samples which gave identical results. It is believed that negative magnetoresistance after direct measurement occurred due to the interaction between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases and the value was 37%, the highest reported in the literature so far. As a result of the presence of Ni3+ ions, antiferromagnetic phase and ferromagnetic like behaviour of NiO nanoparticles gave higher magnetization than other reported nanoparticles. Such large values of magnetoresistance of the samples will make the material useful as an ideal magnetic sensor.This work presents NiO nanoparticles synthesized by simple chemical route showing large magnetodielectric effect at room temperature resulted from Maxwell–Wagner polarization effect which was arising due to large negative magnetoresistance. 相似文献

Understanding cause and effect is a fundamental aspect of human cognition. When shown videos of simple two-dimensional shapes colliding, humans experience one object causing the other to move, e.g., one billiard-like ball seeming to hit and move the other. The impression of causality can also occur when people attribute social interactions to moving objects. Whether the judgment of social and physical causality engages distinct or shared neural networks is not known. In a functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) study, participants were presented with two types of dynamic videos: a blue ball colliding with a red ball (P; physical condition) and a blue ball (“Mr. Blue”) passing a red ball (“Mrs. Red”) without making contact (S; social condition). Participants judged causal relationships (C) or movement direction (D; control task) in both video types, resulting in four conditions (PC; SC; PD; SD). We found common neural activations for physical and social causality judgments (SC>SD)∩(PC>PD) in the right middle/inferior frontal gyrus, right inferior parietal lobule, the right supplementary motor area, and bilateral insulae. For social causal judgments (SC>PC), we found distinct neural activity in the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ). These results provide evidence for a common neural network underlying judgments of causality that apply to both physical and social situations. The results also indicate that social causality judgments recruit additional neural resources in an area critical for determining animacy and intentionality. 相似文献

Backgrounds
Cost-effectiveness analysis plays an important role to guide resource allocation decisions, however, information on cost per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) averted by health facilities is not available in many developing economies, including India. We estimated cost per DALY averted for 2611 patients admitted for surgical interventions in a 106-bed private for-profit hospital in northern India.Methods
Costs were calculated using standard costing methods for the financial year 2012–2013, and effectiveness was measured in DALYs averted using risk of death/disability, effectiveness of treatment and disability weights from 2010 global burden of disease study.Results
During the study period, total operating cost of the hospital for treating surgical patients was USD 1,554,406 and the hospital averted 9401 DALYs resulting in a cost per DALY averted of USD 165.Conclusions
Even though this study was based on one hospital in India, however, the hospital is a private hospital which is expected to have less surgical case load compared to government health facilities, cost per DALY averted for the surgical interventions is much lower than the cost-effectiveness threshold for India (USD 1508 in 2012). This study therefore provides evidence to re-think the common notion that surgical care is expensive and therefore of lower value than other health interventions.130.
