Aneurysm of the fossa ovalis in infants: A pathologic study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary An aneurysm of the fossa ovalis was identified at autopsy in 17 infants. In each case the aneurysm of the fossa ovalis was considered to have resulted from excessive elevation of pressure in that atrium contralateral to the side into which the aneurysm bulged. The aneurysms were divided into two types: intrinsic (three cases) and extrinsic (14 cases). The intrinsic types of aneurysms of the fossa ovalis were considered to have started in fetal life and were consequences of abnormally narrow states of interatrial ostium II. Each intrinsic aneurysm bulged toward the left. Among the extrinsic types of aneurysm of the fossa ovalis, each was considered to have resulted from the hemodynamic consequences of a congenital anomaly in one side of the heart or other. Six aneurysms of extrinsic type bulged toward the left and eight toward the right. Aneurysm of the fossa ovalis should be included in the differential diagnosis of space-occupying conditions within the atria.This study was supported by the Saint Paul Foundation, St. Paul, by the Minnesota Medical Foundation, St. Paul, and by Parents-for-Heart, Minneapolis, Minnesota.  相似文献

Head and neck tumors include nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and lymphoma. The differential diagnosis of these tumors is based on histology, immunocytochemical staining, and EBV serology. In rare cases it might be difficult to distinguish between NPC and lymphoma in HE section or biopsies. DNA hybridization with cloned EBV and human Immunoglobulin gene fragments allows the detection of EBV-related sequences and immunoglobulin gene rearrangements. The presence of EBV genome supports the diagnosis of NPC or EBV related BL, while rearrangement of immunoglobulin genes points to B-cell lymphoma. The diagnosis in 11 patients suspected of head and neck tumors was carried out by hybridization of DNA extracted from the tumors and assayed with cloned EBV and IgHCJ DNA probes. One patient proved to have EBV-associated BL based on positive hybridization with EBV probes and immunoglobulin rearrangement, presenting a unique hybridization with cloned EBV DNA BamHI W fragment, with bands of 3.2 and 3.9 kb. BL was confirmed in this patient by demonstration of c-myc rearrangement. A second patient was negative in hybridization with EBV, and positive for immunoglobulin rearrangement, and therefore was diagnosed as having B-cell lymphoma. In seven patients NPC was confirmed by hybridization with EBV-DNA probes. In two patients, both NPC and B-cell lymphomas were excluded.  相似文献

The effects of anticholinergic drugs selective for muscarinic receptor subtypes on prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle response were determined in mice. The prepulse inhibition is associated with sensorimotor information processing in the brain. The anticholinergic agent scopolamine (0.3 mg/kg, s.c.) significantly attenuated prepulse inhibition, while the drug (1-10 mg/kg, s.c.) had no effects on startle amplitude as an indicator of startle response. The muscarinic M(1) receptor antagonist pirenzepine (0.1-10 microg/mouse, i.c.v.) and the muscarinic M(2) receptor antagonist AF-DX116 (11-[[2-[(diethylamino)methyl]-1-piperidinyl]acetyl]-5,11-dihydro-6H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]benzodiazepin-6-one) (0.1-10 microg/mouse, i.c.v.) had no effects on prepulse inhibition or startle amplitude. The muscarinic M(3) receptor antagonist 4-DAMP (1,1-dimethyl-4-diphenylacetoxy-piperidinium iodide) (30 microg/mouse, i.c.v.) and the muscarinic M(4) receptor antagonist tropicamide (0.1 microg/mouse, i.c.v.) significantly attenuated prepulse inhibition, while tropicamide (0.01 microg/mouse, i.c.v.) but not 4-DAMP (10 and 30 microg/mouse, i.c.v.) produced a significant increase in startle amplitude. These results suggest that the blockade of muscarinic M(3) and M(4) receptors leads to the disruption of prepulse inhibition.  相似文献

The Tranguch Gasoline Spill leaked 50,000-900,000 gallons of gasoline from underground storage tanks, potentially exposing an area of Hazle Township and Hazleton, Pennsylvania, to chronic low levels of benzene since at least 1990. A retrospective cohort study of 663 individuals representing 275 households assessed whether affected residents were at increased risk for cancer from 1990-2000 compared with the Pennsylvania populace. Age-adjusted standard incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated using Pennsylvania rates to determine expected numbers. The age-adjusted SIR for the gasoline-affected area was 4.40 (95% confidence interval: 1.09-10.24) for leukemia. These results suggest an association between living within the area affected by the Tranguch Gasoline Spill and increased risk for leukemia.  相似文献

More than 70 years ago, Alexander Fleming discovered lysozyme and proposed that nonpathogenic bacteria fail to cause disease because they are very susceptible to destruction by lysozyme, an enzyme that is one of the principal proteins of phagocytes. Although much has been learned about the effects of lysozyme in vitro, its biological role in vivo has not been determined. We examined transgenic mice deficient in lysozyme M after challenge by the normally nonpathogenic and highly lysozyme-sensitive bacterium Micrococcus luteus. Despite partial compensation by newly expressed lysozyme P in macrophages, lysozyme M-deficient mice developed much more severe lesions than wild-type mice. The tissue injury was due to the failure of lysozyme M-deficient mice to inactivate peptidoglycan, resulting in an intense and prolonged inflammatory response. Our data indicate that tissue injury is normally limited by prompt degradation of bacterial macromolecules that trigger innate immunity and inflammation.  相似文献

Heterotrimeric G proteins play a pivotal role in postreceptor information transduction. These proteins have been implicated in the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of mood disorders and proposed as a state-dependent biochemical mood marker in mononuclear leukocytes. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with changes in mood, affecting patients' illness perceptions and behavior. We examined whether mononuclear leukocytes of patients with IBS have altered G protein measures. We undertook G protein functional measurements through agonist-enhanced [3H]Gpp(NH)p binding capacity and quantitative measures by immunoblot analysis using anti-Galpha antibodies in mononuclear leukocytes obtained from 19 IBS patients (Rome criteria) and 19 healthy matched subjects. The study groups were similar in age, gender, and years of education. Mononuclear leukocyte functions of G(s) (21.3+/-8.3%) and G(i) (22.2+/-6.7%) proteins in IBS patients were similar to healthy subjects (24.8+/-4.7 and 25.2+/-4.0%, respectively). The relative immunoreactivities of the G(sa) (98.9+/-10.2%) and the G(ia) (104.2+/-11.5%) subunit proteins in mononuclear leukocytes of IBS patients were also similar to those in healthy subjects. Two patients clinically diagnosed as depressed were detected by the G protein assay. The results lend objective support to the contention that major depression is not a causative factor in IBS, nor associated with its severity. The G protein assay may provide an objective biochemical tool for detecting depression in IBS, differentiating it from psychological distress that is commonly diagnosed by subjective tests.  相似文献
