The present paper tries to honour Charles Darwin's memory in the year in which the world celebrates the 200 anniversary of his birth and the 150 of the publication of The Origin of Species. After pointing out that the basis of his theory of evolution, “improvement of species”, is a time-dependent concept, commenting on the role that atrophied organs played in Darwin's work and relating this with Darwinian medicine, it is suggested that stem cell and cardiovascular therapies could be perhaps connected with some of the ideas and possibilities already envisaged by Darwin and mentioned in one of his books, The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication (1868).  相似文献

To evaluate the long-term prognostic significance of different ranges of the percentage fall in nighttime blood pressure (BP) of the nondipping pattern, 1200 hypertensive patients (645 women, age 51±12 years) underwent ambulatory BP monitoring under stabilized therapy. The occurrence of cardiovascular (CV) events was followed for 9833 patient-years and analyzed by the Cox hazard model. There were 152 CV fatal/nonfatal events (79 strokes, 51 coronary events, 22 others) during the 15.2 years of follow-up. According to nighttime BP fall (%) the authors noted: <0% (reverse-dippers [RD], n=83); 0%–4.9% (nondippers 1 [ND1], n=207); 5%–9.9% (nondippers 2 [ND2], n=311), 10%–19.9% (dippers [D], n=523); and ≥20% (extreme dippers [ED], n=76). After adjustment for confounding variables, hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) of CV event and stroke in RD vs D were 2.29 (1.31–3.99) and 2.46 (1.11–5.49); of ND1 vs D were 1.42 (1.12–1.79) and 1.62 (1.17–2.23); and of ND1 vs ND2 were 2.24 (1.33–3.75) and 2.30 (1.15–4.58). No differences were found in RD vs ND1 and ND2 vs D. Nondippers have a higher CV risk than dippers but only for a nighttime BP fall <5% suggesting that the limits for nondipping should be redefined for a stratification of CV risk.  相似文献

The prevalence of morbid obesity has seen an increase in developed countries over recent years. Bariatric surgery is almost the only effective strategy for treating super morbidly obese patients. Abstract: Pancreatic cancer is a major health problem because of the aggressiveness of the disease and the lack of effective systemic therapies. Melatonin (MEL) has antioxidant activity and prevents experimental genotoxicity. The specific inhibitor of cyclooxygenase‐2 (COX‐2), celecoxib (CEL), increases the efficacy of chemoradiotherapy in advanced pancreatic cancer. The objective of the study was the comparison and synergic effect of MEL and CEL during either the induction or progression phases of the tumor process, measuring parameters of oxidative stress, number of tumor nodules and survival of animals with pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer was induced by N‐nitrosobis (2‐oxopropyl)amine) (BOP) in Syrian hamsters. Melatonin and/or CEL were administered during the induction, postinduction as well as during both phases. The presence of tumor nodules were observed macroscopically in pancreatic and splenic areas, and the levels of lipoperoxides (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) in pancreatic tissue were measured. The increases in tumor nodules and LPO as well as the reductions in GSH and enzymatic antioxidants in the pancreas induced by BOP were related to a lower survival rate of animals. The administration of MEL exerted a more potent beneficial effect than CEL treatment on the reduction in tumor nodules, oxidative stress and death of experimental BOP‐treated animals. The combined treatment only exerted a synergistic beneficial effect when administered during the induction phase. Melatonin by itself had significant beneficial actions in improving the survival of hamsters.  相似文献

Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injuries may occur during various dental routine procedures, especially in the removal of impacted lower third molars, and nerve recovery in these cases is a great challenge in dentistry. Here, the IAN crush injury model was used to assess the efficacy of photobiomodulation (PBM) in the recovery of the IAN in rats following crushing injury (a partial lesion). Rats were divided into four experimental groups: without any procedure, IAN crush injury, and IAN crush injury with PBM and sham group with PBM. Treatment was started 2 days after surgery, above the site of injury, and was performed every other day, totaling 10 sessions. Rats were irradiated with GaAs Laser (Gallium Arsenide, Laserpulse, Ibramed Brazil) emitting a wavelength of 904 nm, an output power of 70 mWpk, beam spot size at target ~0.1 cm2, a frequency of 9500 Hz, a pulse time 60 ns, and an energy density of 6 J/cm2. Nerve recovery was investigated by measuring the morphometric data of the IAN using TEM and by the expression of laminin, neurofilaments (NFs), and myelin protein zero (MPZ) using Western blot analysis. We found that IAN-injured rats which received PBM had a significant improvement of IAN morphometry when compared to IAN-injured rats without PBM. In parallel, all MPZ, laminin, and NFs exhibited a decrease after PBM. The results of this study indicate that the correlation between the peripheral nerve ultrastructure and the associated protein expression shows the beneficial effects of PBM.  相似文献
