BACKGROUND: There are controversies about the importance of biopsies of normal colon mucosa in the investigation of patients with chronic diarrhea. STUDY: Colonic and terminal ileum biopsies of 167 patients were reviewed. In 5 patients, used as controls, colonoscopy was done due to family history of colon cancer. RESULTS: The 5 patients without symptoms had no histologic abnormalities. The histologic findings in 162 patients with chronic diarrhea were as follows: 110 patients (67.9%) with normal histology, microscopic colitis not otherwise specified, and isolated small granulomas; 17 (10.5%) patients had findings of borderline diagnostic significance, including possible collagenous colitis, some features of lymphocytic colitis and melanosis coli; and 35 (21.6%) patients, with diagnostic significant histologic findings as collagenous colitis, lymphocytic colitis, minimal change microscopic colitis, eosinophilic colitis, pericrypt eosinophilic enterocolitis, intestinal spirochetosis, schistosomiasis, and Crohn's disease. Of the 52 patients with either borderline or significant diagnostic abnormalities, in 8 (15.4%) the diagnosis was done only with a proximal study (ascending, transverse, or descending colons). CONCLUSIONS: Histologic lesions of possible diagnostic value could exist in 32.1% of chronic diarrhea patients with normal colonoscopy, which can justify, in certain cases, mucosa biopsies, which might contribute for a more precise etiologic diagnosis; also, the distribution of these histologic changes has pointed out the importance of having all colon segments biopsied. 相似文献

Abstract: Citronellol is an essential oil constituent from the medicinal plants Cymbopogon citratus, Cymbopogon winterianus and Lippia alba which are thought to possess antihypertensive properties. Citronellol‐induced cardiovascular effects were evaluated in this study. In rats, citronellol (1–20 mg/kg, i.v.) induced hypotension, which was not affected by pre‐treatment with atropine, hexamethonium, Nω‐nitro‐l ‐arginine methyl ester hydrochloride or indomethacin, and tachycardia, which was only attenuated by pre‐treatment with atropine and hexamethonium. These responses were less than those obtained for nifedipine, a reference drug. In intact rings of rat mesenteric artery pre‐contracted with 10 μM phenylephrine, citronellol induced relaxations (pD2 = 0.71 ± 0.11; Emax = 102 ± 5%; n = 6) that were not affected by endothelium removal, after tetraethylamonium in rings without endothelium pre‐contracted with KCl 80 mM. Citronellol strongly antagonized (maximal inhibition = 97 ± 4%; n = 6) the contractions induced by CaCl2 (10?6 to 3 × 10?3 M) and did not induce additional effects on the maximal response of nifedipine (10 μM). Finally, citronellol inhibited the contractions induced by 10 μM phenylephrine or 20 mM caffeine. The present results suggest that citronellol lowers blood pressure by a direct effect on the vascular smooth muscle leading to vasodilation. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of water storage at 37 degrees C (1 week, 1 month and 3 months) on tooth displacement in maxillary complete dentures. Ten maxillary dentures were constructed with Clássico acrylic resin using the conventional method of packing in metallic flasks. Metallic reference pins were placed in the incisal border of the central incisors (I), labial cusp of the first premolars (PM), and mesiolabial cusp of the second molars (M). Twelve hours after final flask closure, the acrylic resin was cured in water at 74 degrees C for 9 h. The flasks were removed from the thermo-polymerizing unit after water-cooling and the dentures were deflasked, finished and stored in water at a temperature of 37 degrees C for 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. At deflasking and at the water storage intervals, the I-I (incisor to incisor), PM-PM (pre-molar to pre-molar), and M-M (molar to molar) transversal distances, and LI-LM (left incisor to left molar) and RI-RM (right incisor to right molar) anteroposterior distances were measured using an optical microscope with 0.0005 mm accuracy. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). Comparing the evaluation periods for each individual transversal and anteroposterior reference point, no statistically significant differences were observed among deflasking and the water storage intervals for I-I, PM-PM, M-M and RI-RM distances (p>0.05). For LI-LM, however, deflasking values were statistically different from those of 1-week, 1-month and 3-month water storage intervals (p<0.05), which, in turn, did not differ statistically to each other (p>0.05). These results confirm the complexity of tooth displacement in complete dentures. From a clinical standpoint, the difference observed in LI-LM distance after water storage would not be detected by the patients during clinical use. 相似文献

1. α‐Terpineol is a monoterpene found in the essential oils of several aromatic plant species. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular changes induced by α‐terpineol in rats. 2. In normotensive rats, administration of α‐terpineol (1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg, i.v.) produced a dose‐dependent hypotension (?10 ± 3, ?20 ± 8, ?39 ± 16, ?52 ± 21 and ?57 ± 23 mmHg, respectively; n = 5) followed by tachycardia. The hypotensive responses to 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg, i.v., α‐terpineol were significantly attenuated following the administration of NG‐nitro‐l‐ arginine methyl ester (l ‐NAME; 20 mg/kg, i.v.; ?2 ± 1, ?5 ± 2, ?7 ± 3, ?22 ± 9 and ?22 ± 10 mmHg, respectively; P < 0.05; n = 5). 3. In 10 μmol/L phenylephrine (PE)‐precontracted mesenteric artery rings, α‐terpineol (10?12 to 10?5 mol/L) caused a concentration‐dependent relaxation (maximum relaxation 61 ± 6%; n = 7). After removal of the endothelium, the vasorelaxation elicited by α‐terpineol was attenuated (maximum relaxation 20 ± 1%; P < 0.05; n = 7). In addition, vasorelaxation induced by α‐terpineol in rings pretreated with 100 or 300 μmol/L l ‐NAME, 30 μmol/L hydroxocobalamin or 10 μmol/L 1H‐[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3‐a]quinoxalin‐1‐one was attenuated (maximum relaxation 18 ± 3, 23 ± 3, 24 ± 7 and 21 ± 1%, respectively; n = 6; P < 0.05). 4. Furthermore, in a rabbit aortic endothelial cell line, 10?6, 10?5 and 10?4 mol/L α‐terpineol induced concentration‐dependent increases in nitric oxide (NO) levels (12 ± 6, 18 ± 9 and 34 ± 12%Δ fluorescence, respectively; n = 3). 5. In conclusion, using combined functional and biochemical approaches in the present study, we were able to demonstrate that α‐terpineol‐induced hypotension and vasorelaxation are mediated, at least in part, by the endothelium, most likely via NO release and activation of the NO–cGMP pathway. 相似文献

Primary barrier determinations for the shielding of medical radiation therapy facilities are generally made assuming normal beam incidence on the barrier, since this is geometrically the most unfavorable condition for that shielding barrier whenever the occupation line is allowed to run along the barrier. However, when the occupation line (for example, the wall of an adjacent building) runs perpendicular to the barrier (especially roof barrier), then two opposing factors come in to play: increasing obliquity angle with respect to the barrier increases the attenuation, while the distance to the calculation point decreases, hence, increasing the dose. As a result, there exists an angle (alpha(max)) for which the equivalent dose results in a maximum, constituting the most unfavorable geometric condition for that shielding barrier. Based on the usual NCRP Report No. 151 model, this article presents a simple formula for obtaining alpha(max), which is a function of the thickness of the barrier (t(E)) and the equilibrium tenth-value layer (TVL(e)) of the shielding material for the nominal energy of the beam. It can be seen that alpha(max) increases for increasing TVL(e) (hence, beam energy) and decreases for increasing t(E), with a range of variation that goes from 13 to 40 deg for concrete barriers thicknesses in the range of 50-300 cm and most commercially available teletherapy machines. This parameter has not been calculated in the existing literature for radiotherapy facilities design and has practical applications, as in calculating the required unoccupied roof shielding for the protection of a nearby building located in the plane of the primary beam rotation. 相似文献
