Objective

The aim of this study was to compare the fit accuracies of metal partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) frameworks fabricated by the traditional technique (TT) or the light-curing modeling material technique (LCMT).

Materials and methods

A metal model of a Kennedy class III modification 1 mandibular dental arch with two edentulous spaces of different spans, short and long, was used for the study. Thirty identical working casts were used to produce 15 PRDP frameworks each by TT and by LCMT. Every framework was transferred to a metal master cast to measure the gap between the metal base of the framework and the crest of the alveolar ridge of the cast. Gaps were measured at three points on each side by a USB digital intraoral camera at ×16.5 magnification. Images were transferred to a graphics editing program. A single examiner performed all measurements. The two-tailed t-test was performed at the 5% significance level.

Results

The mean gap value was significantly smaller in the LCMT group compared to the TT group. The mean value of the short edentulous span was significantly smaller than that of the long edentulous span in the LCMT group, whereas the opposite result was obtained in the TT group.

Conclusion

Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the fit of the LCMT-fabricated frameworks was better than the fit of the TT-fabricated frameworks. The framework fit can differ according to the span of the edentate ridge and the fabrication technique for the metal framework.  相似文献

Background

Thyroid cancer is a common malignant disease of the endocrine system with increasing incidence rates over the last few decades. In this study, we sought to analyze the possible association of 45 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with thyroid cancer in a population from Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.

Methods

Based on histological analysis by a pathologist, 80 normal thyroid specimens of tissue adjacent to thyroid tumors were obtained from the biobank at the Laboratory of Pathology of Liga Norte Riograndense Contra o Câncer, Natal, RN. Patient samples were then genotyped using the MassARRAY platform (Sequenon, Inc) followed by statistical analysis employing the SNPassoc package in R program. The genotypic frequencies of all 45 SNPs obtained from the International HapMap Project database and based on data from the ancestral populations of European and African origin were used to compose the control study group.

Results

In our study, the following 9 SNPs showed significant differences in their frequency when comparing the study and control groups: rs3744962, rs258107, rs1461855, rs4075022, rs9943744, rs4075570, rs2356508, rs17485896, and rs2651339. Furthermore, the SNPs rs374492 C/T and rs258107 C/T were associated with a relative risk for thyroid carcinoma of 3.78 (p?=?6.27?×?10e?5) and 2.91 (p?=?8.27?×?10e?5), respectively, after Bonferroni’s correction for multiple comparisons.

Conclusions

These nine polymorphisms could be potential biomarkers of predisposition to thyroid carcinoma in the population from Rio Grande do Norte. However, complementary studies including a control group with samples obtained from healthy subjects in Rio Grande do Norte state, should be conducted to confirm these results.

Introduction

This study investigated the effects of Emdogain gel (EMD) on the injured open apex within periapical lesions.

Methods

Periapical lesions were induced in rats by opening the pulp chambers of the mandibular first molars and filing the apical foramen through the distal root canal with #25 K-files to make an open apex. The teeth were exposed to the oral environment for 7 days. Then we irrigated the distal root canals and divided them into EMD-treated and propylene glycol alginate–treated groups. The rats were killed 7, 14, and 28 days after treatment and examined histochemically.

Results

In the EMD-treated rats, more cells expressed transforming growth factor-β1 or bone morphogenetic protein-2 at 7 days after treatment, and the regeneration of cementum and bone was observed around the root apex at 14 days after treatment. Conversely, in the propylene glycol alginate–treated group, few cells expressed transforming growth factor-β1 or bone morphogenetic protein-2, and apical periodontal tissue recovery was rarely seen within the periapical lesions throughout the experiment.

Conclusions

These results suggest that EMD does not irritate injured periapical tissue and may create a favorable environment that promotes the healing of destroyed periapical tissues.  相似文献

Objectives. Cardiomyopathy is a well known complication in familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP). Troponin T and B-natriuretic peptide (BNP) have been shown to be excellent markers for heart complications in AL-amyloidosis. The aim of the study was to investigate troponin T, troponin I and BNP as markers for myocardial damage and failure in FAP. Design. Retrospective investigation of patients with FAP. Setting. Tertiary referral centre. Subjects. Twenty-nine patients who had been submitted for evaluation of FAP. Interventions. Two-dimensional M-mode and Doppler echocardiography and strain echocardiographic examination. Measurement of Troponin T, troponin I and BNP. Results. Troponin T was detectable in only three patients who all had abnormal interventricular septal (IVS) thickness. Troponin I was abnormal in six patients (21%), of which only two had an increased IVS thickness. The heart function was generally well preserved in the patients in spite of hypertrophy of the IVS in 14 patients. BNP was elevated in 22 patients (76%), and it correlated significantly with IVS thickness and basal septal strain. Conclusions. Transthyretin amyloid seems to be less harmful to myocytes than that of AL amyloid as evaluated by serum troponin T and I as well as by echocardiography. BNP appears to be a sensitive marker for cardiomyopathy in FAP, and could prove valuable for follow-up purposes as has been shown for AL-amyloidosis patients.  相似文献

An apical periodontitis experimental model was produced by means of opening the pulp chamber of the mandibular first molar in Wistar strain rats. In particular, the behavior of bone tissue in the vicinity of the root apex was investigated histochemically, ultrastructurally, and quantitatively. In addition, in order to demonstrate the effects of prostaglandin on the formation process of apical periodontitis, we examined the effects of indomethacin on bone remodeling during experimental apical periodontitis. These experiments suggested that prostaglandin may stimulate osteoclastic bone resorption and that the relationship between bone resorption and formation in apical periodontitis is a coupling phenomenon.  相似文献

Human oxoguanine glycosylase 1 (OGG1) is an important part of the base excision repair pathway in the DNA repair. Numerous epidemiological studies have evaluated the association between OGG1 rs1052133 polymorphism and the risk of colorectal cancer, but the results of these studies from the Caucasian population were conflicting. To derive a more precise assessment on the association between OGG1 rs1052133 polymorphism and risk of colorectal cancer in Caucasian population, we performed a meta-analysis. The odds ratios (OR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess the strength of the association. Thirteen case–control studies with a total of 4,103 cases and 5,400 controls were finally included into the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis of all 13 studies showed that OGG1 rs1052133 polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of colorectal cancer in Caucasian population (Cys versus Ser OR?=?1.20, 95 % CI?=?1.03–1.39, P?=?0.02; CysCys versus SerSer OR?=?1.44, 95 % CI?=?1.04–2.00, P?=?0.03; CysCys versus SerSer/SerCys OR?=?1.39, 95 % CI?=?1.15–1.67, P?=?0.0005). In the sensitivity analysis, omitting each study one at a time had no obvious influence on the pooled OR, which confirmed the stability of meta-analysis. Falcarindiol is a diacetylenic natural product containing unique carbon-carbon triple bonds. Mice were orally administrated falcarindiol (100 mg/kg), and drug-metabolizing and antioxidant enzymes were monitored in several tissues of mice. Treatment with falcarindiol was found to increase glutathione S-transferase (GST) and NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 activities in liver, small intestine, kidney, and lung. No changes were observed in cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A known to activate procarcinogens. Western blot analysis revealed that various GST subunits including GSTA4, which plays an important role in the detoxification of alkenals produced from lipid peroxides, were induced in liver, small intestine, and kidney of falcarindiol-treated mice. Additionally, we investigated the protective effects of falcarindiol against hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) and the mechanism of its hepatoprotective effect. Pretreatment with falcarindiol prior to the administration of CCl(4) significantly suppressed both an increase in serum alanine transaminase/aspartate transaminase (ALT/AST) activity and an increase in hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels without affecting CCl(4)-mediated degradation of CYP2E1. Formation of hexanoyl-lysine and 4-hydroxy-2(E)-nonenal-histidine adducts, lipid peroxidation biomarkers, in homogenates from the liver of CCl(4)-treated mice was decreased in the group of mice pretreated with falcarindiol. These results suggest that the protective effects of falcarindiol against CCl(4) toxicity might, in part, be explained by anti-lipid peroxidation activity associated with the induction of the GSTs including GSTA4.  相似文献

This study evaluated the in vitro activity of combinations of doripenem (DRPM) with aminoglycosides (tobramycin or amikacin) or fluoroquinolone (ciprofloxacin) against 92 isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from 16 clinical facilities in 2004 in Japan. We also tested combination effect of other carbapenems (imipenem (IPM), meropenem, biapenem) with aminoglycosides or fluoroquinolone by checkerboard dilution methods. DRPM showed synergistic or additive effects with the aminoglycosides or the fluoroquinolone against 90% of the isolates. The combination of DRPM and aminoglycosides showed the strongest synergistic effects against IPM-intermediate resistant and IPM resistant strains among the tested combinations. These results suggested that combination of DRPM with aminoglycosides would be useful for the treatment of infections caused by P aeruginosa including IPM-resistant strains.  相似文献
