The profession of dentistry developed essentially based on the rapid progress of research in general. With the law of dentistry in 1952, the dentist became an independent profession in Germany. The EU directive 2005/36 for recognition of professional qualifications now regulates the requirements for practicing as a dentist in the European Union. Today, dentistry is a scientifically based medical discipline which has increased its preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic possibilities especially over the last 3?decades. The implementation is carried out in dental practice under the framework and basic conditions of present health care policy and conditions. A new order regulating licenses to practice dentistry is under development in which the first 2?years will be nearly identical with the studies of medicine and the medical licensure act. The closer orientation toward medicine is reasonable as more multimorbid patients will have a need for dental treatment in daily practice and co-operation with physicians will be more frequent in the future. New occupational profiles in dentistry are proposed above the level of a graduated dentist as well as below but also in completely new noncurative areas.     

Seltene Ursache eines schweren kardiogenen Schocks

A 48-year-old male patient with atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, and hypertensive crisis was submitted to our intensive care unit. A pheochromocytoma had recently been diagnosed. In the clinical course the patient developed cardiogenic shock and needed to be resuscitated twice. The patient was transferred by helicopter with a transportable cardiopulmonary bypass to a specialized medical center. After further stabilisation, veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was used temporarily and he was able to undergo adrenalectomy several days later. The patient survived without residual effects.     

Case Report: Fulminant Hepatitis E in a Woman Taking Oral Contraceptive Medication

We describe a fulminant autochthonous hepatic failure caused by hepatitis E (HEV) in a patient admitted in our hospital for liver-transplant evaluation. The only risk factor recorded for this severe course was the use of oral contraceptives that are known to mimic a hormonal status similar to pregnancy. The diagnosis was based on the presence of IgG and IgM anti-HEV in the serum of the patient and confirmed by the isolation of a strain of HEV genotype 3f from a blood sample obtained the fourth day after hospital admission. HEV genotype 3 is present in human and swine populations in Spain. The patient began to recover while waiting for a liver transplant. To our knowledge, this is the first report of fulminant hepatitis E in a non-pregnant European patient on oral contraceptives.
