Use of the 90Sr applicator for intraoperative radiation therapy in a mouse tumor model

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) research is limited by the lack of small-animal models. We have implanted B16 melanoma into mouse kidneys, which we subsequently operated upon and irradiated with beta rays from a ⁹⁰Sr ophthalmic applicator. The IORT has effectively prolonged survival and produced some cures. The strategy should be applicable to other murine tumors and to other internal implantation sites.     

Pediatric microsurgery: revascularization and replantation

Pediatric microvascular surgery has received little attention in the literature until recently. The demonstrated feasibility with successful results represents a disproportionately small patient population when compared with adults. One reason for this delayed growth in pediatric revascularization and replantation appears to be a lack of awareness on the part of both referring physicians and microvascular surgeons as to its present indications and outcome. Several cases are presented along with a review of the current literature to clarify this issue. A protocol for managing these patients from a triage standpoint is also included.     

Surgery of calculous hydrocalyx (Calyceoplastic surgery)

A modified surgical technique for calculous hydrocalyx, based on partial calyceal resection with simultaneous correction of the morphological abnormality responsible for stone formation is described. Access to the calyx is gained by a modified marginopolar resection. The modification developed by the authors consists in carrying the resection line laterally to the vertical axis of teh kidney. The parenchyma is closed by U-shaped “hair-pin” stitches. Preparation of the limbic, pelvic and ureteral areas is abstained from, thus avoiding scarring which might affect renal lymph and blood flow and interfere with urinary transport. The results obtained in 85 cases of calculous hydrocalyx over an 8-year period were satisfactory. The rate of calculous recurrences was not higher than 3.5 per cent.
