Single breath-holding gradient echo techniques fast imaging with steady-state free precession (FISP) and fast low angle shot (FLASH) images were evaluated in the study of the abdomen in 16 patients (13 liver, two kidney, and one pancreas examinations). Gradient echo images were compared retrospectively with conventional spin echo images for image quality (depiction of pathology and representation of anatomic detail), and contrast characteristics were evaluated. All lesions were shown on gradient echo images, and in three of 16 cases gradient echo images were more diagnostic than spin echo images. On both FISP and FLASH images, most hepatic metastases were hyperintense relative to normal liver. The predicted flip angles for maximal contrast for the liver were modeled from signal intensity equations for FISP and FLASH and yielded predicted flip angles of approximately 40-55 degrees for FISP and 15-25 degrees for FLASH. Peak signal-to-noise ratio in liver of normal volunteers occurred at approximately 30 degrees for both FISP and FLASH. Single breath-holding gradient echo images are useful in the evaluation of abdominal structures and this study provides a framework for future work.  相似文献

Ytterbium-DTPA was evaluated as a potential intravascular contrast agent. Ytterbium-DTPA was synthesized from ytterbium oxide and diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA). CT scans of increasing concentrations of ytterbium and iodine showed that at 125 kVp, ytterbium was denser than an equal concentration of iodine. The LD50 of intravenous ytterbium-DTPA was 10 mM/kg (1.73 g ytterbium/kg) in rats. In enhanced CT scans and pulmonary angiography in dogs, ytterbium was visibly denser than iodine, and CT Hounsfield units showed greater enhancement of the aorta and inferior vena cava with ytterbium. The animals showed no sign of acute or delayed toxicity. Ytterbium-DTPA deserves further evaluation as a contrast agent for high kVp techniques.  相似文献

Local tissue renin-angiotensin systems have recently been discovered in various organs, and evidence is accumulating that inhibition of these local renin-angiotensin systems may contribute to the actions of converting enzyme (CE) inhibitors. Measurements of CE activity and angiotensin II concentrations revealed that after oral administration of CE inhibitors, CE was inhibited not only in lung vascular endothelium and blood, but also in the heart, kidney, vascular wall, brain and other organs. The functional significance of tissue CE inhibition is suggested first by the antihypertensive effect of brain CE inhibition in spontaneously hypertensive rats, second by the concomitant persistence of blood pressure decrease and CE inhibition in vascular wall and kidney after long-term oral CE inhibitor treatment and third by ex vivo experiments demonstrating marked effects of oral CE inhibitor pretreatment on cardiac function in isolated rat hearts. Local inhibition of tissue renin-angiotensin systems may be an important factor involved in the beneficial effects of CE inhibitors in such cardiovascular diseases as arterial hypertension, congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.  相似文献

FM sonography - a signal-processing technique that uses frequency and phase information as well as amplitude data - shows promise in evaluation of patients with diffuse liver disease. In a prospective blinded review of 37 patients with biopsy-proved liver disease and 42 healthy volunteers, FM sonography was clearly superior to traditional amplitude-based (AM) sonography in distinguishing healthy from diseased subjects. Statistically significant differences were seen in accuracy (FM, 98.7%; AM, 84.8%), sensitivity (FM, 97.3%; AM, 70.3%), and negative predictive value (FM, 97.7%; AM, 78.8%). Our data also suggest that current FM sonographic techniques cannot differentiate among histologic findings associated with different hepatic parenchymal abnormalities. It is unclear, therefore, whether FM imaging can reduce the numbers of patients who require biopsy for diagnosis or the frequency of biopsy procedures in patients with known disease.  相似文献

Background  

It has been observed that ras-transformed cell lines in culture have a higher phosphatidylcholine (PC) biosynthesis rate as well as higher PC-degradation rate (increased PC-turnover) than normal cells. In correspondence to these findings, the concentrations of the PC-degradation product lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC) in cancer patients were found to be decreased. Our objective was the systematic investigation of the relationship between LPC and inflammatory and nutritional parameters in cancer patients. Therefore, plasma LPC concentrations were assessed in 59 cancer patients and related to nutritional and inflammatory parameters. To determine LPC in blood plasma we developed and validated a HPTLC method.  相似文献

Even though continued smoking by cancer patients adversely affects survival and quality of life, about one third of patients who smoked prior to their diagnosis continue to smoke after their diagnosis. The implementation of smoking cessation treatments for cancer patients has been slowed by the lack of data on correlates of tobacco use in this population. Thus, this longitudinal study assessed demographic, medical, addiction, and psychological predictors of tobacco use among 74 head, neck, and lung cancer patients. Multivariable binary logistic regression analyses, with outcome categorized as smoker or nonsmoker, indicated that the likelihoodthat patients would be a smoker was associated with lower levels of perceived risk and a higher level of quitting cons. Multivariable nominal logistic regression, with outcome classified as continuous smoker, continuous quitter, relapser, or follow-up quitter, indicated that: (a) patients categorized as continuous smokers reported significantly lower quitting self-efficacy than follow-up quitters and continuous quitters, (b) relapsers reported a significantly lower level of quitting self-efficacy than either follow-up quitters or continuous quitters, and (c) continuous smokers exhibited a significantly lower level of risk perceptions than continuous abstainers. These findings can be useful for the development and evaluation of treatments to promote smoking cessation among cancer patients.
