Text messaging as a new method for injury registration in sports: A methodological study in elite female football

Methodological differences in epidemiologic studies have led to significant discrepancies in injury incidences reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate text messaging as a new method for injury registration in elite female football players and to compare this method with routine medical staff registration. Twelve teams comprising 228 players prospectively recorded injuries and exposure through one competitive football season. Players reported individually by answering three text messages once a week. A designated member of the medical staff conducted concurrent registrations of injuries and exposure. Injuries and exposure were compared between medical staff registrations from nine teams and their 159 affiliated players. During the football season, a total of 232 time‐loss injuries were recorded. Of these, 62% were captured through individual registration only, 10% by the medical staff only, and 28% were reported through both methods. The incidence of training injuries was 3.7 per 1000 player hours when calculated from individual registration vs 2.2 from medical staff registration [rate ratio (RR): 1.7, 1.2–2.4]. For match injuries, the corresponding incidences were 18.6 vs 5.4 (RR: 3.4, 2.4–4.9), respectively. There was moderate agreement for severity classifications in injury cases reported by both methods (kappa correlation coefficient: 0.48, confidence interval: 0.30–0.66).     

Participation of older newly-diagnosed cancer patients in an observational prospective pilot study: an example of recruitment and retention

Background  

There have been few prospective observational studies which recruited older newly-diagnosed cancer patients, and of these only some have reported information on the number needed to screen to recruit their study sample, and the number and reasons for refusal and drop-out. This paper reports on strategies to recruit older newly-diagnosed cancer patients prior to treatment into an observational prospective pilot study and to retain them during a six-month period.     

Radiation dose reduction during hysterosalpingography: an application of scanning-beam digital radiography

Hysterosalpingography was performed in 31 patients by means of a low-dose scanning-beam digital radiographic system. The technique permits adequate evaluation of gynecologic abnormalities while allowing significant reduction in radiation: 2.4-mR (6.1 X 10(-7) C/kg) exposure to the skin and 0.7-mrad (7 X 10(-6) Gy) mean dose to the ovaries per image obtained. Sixteen patients demonstrated readily recognizable and documented abnormalities, corroborated by laparoscopy, laparotomy, or other supportive evidence.     

Panniculitis–an unusual cutaneous manifestation of systemic sclerosis

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune systemic disease characterized by small vessel involvement that leads to tissue ischemia and fibroblast stimulation resulting in accumulation of collagen (fibrosis) in the skin and internal organs. Lipomembranous panniculitis is a peculiar type of fat necrosis and has been reported with clinical conditions, commonly with peripheral vascular diseases. We describe a case of a 43‐year‐old woman with SSc manifestations, who presented with black scaly skin plaques, associated with thickening of the subcutaneous fat tissue, on the lateral surface of her thighs, her calves, gluteal area and lower abdomen. Biopsy revealed lipomembranous panniculitis. Lipomembranous changes have been seen in connective tissue disorders such as lupus profundus, morphea, systemic sclerosis and panniculitis associated with dermatomyositis, but rarely in thighs, calves, gluteal area and lower abdomen. Lipid peroxidation and susceptibility of low-density lipoprotein to in vitro oxidation in hyperhomocysteinaemia

Abstract. The pathobiochemical mechanism of arteriosclerosis in hyperhomocysteinaemia has not yet been elucidated. In vitro studies have shown that the cytotoxic properties of homocysteine can be ascribed to its generation of reactive oxygen species. We studied lipid peroxidation, both in vivo and in vitro , in 10 homozygous cystathionine synthase-deficient (CSD) patients and in a control group of 10 healthy subjects of comparable age and sex. The susceptibility of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from hyperhomo-cysteinaemic patients to oxidation was determined in vitro by continuously measuring the conjugated diene production induced by incubation with copper ions. Oxidation resistance (expressed as lag time), maximal oxidation rate, and extent of oxidation (expressed as total diene production) of LDL from CSD patients were not significantly different from those of LDL from controls. Furthermore, the time needed to reach maximal diene production, i.e. t(max), was similar for LDL from patients and controls. In addition, the vitamin E concentrations in LDL of CSD patients and controls were similar. The mean concentration (± SD) of plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), an indicator of in vivo lipid peroxidation, was 2.2 ± 0.7 μmol L^-1 in CSD patients, a lower value than that measured in the matched controls (50± 2.0 μmol L^-1). Investigation of in vivo and in vitro parameters of lipid peroxidation shows that the increased risk of arteriosclerosis in hyperhomocysteinaemia is unlikely to be due to increased lipid peroxidation.
