Quenching of chemiluminescence of singlet oxygen in the presence of carnosine

The treatment of retinal vein thrombosis by puncture of the anterior chamber

Repeated anterior chamber punctures in patients with old (more than one month) retinal vein thrombosis allowed to achieve a rise of visual acuity in 10 of 15 patients. In remote terms (after four months) further improvement of visual functions was recorded, visual acuity increased by 0.3-0.6 in 8 of 15 patients. In the process of treatment, no complications were observed. Repeated anterior chamber punctures can be recommended as a method of choice for treatment of this pathology.     

Accommodative hyperemia of the ciliary body as one of the pathogenetic factors in myopia

Thermometry of 40 eyes before and after visual work at near with different correction of ametropia and tonography of 20 eyes with progressive myopia and 20 eyes with stationary myopia conducted before and after 15-minute reading load under full correction have revealed that visual work at near is accompanied by working hyperemia of ciliary body (rise of temperature in the anterior segment of the eye ball) and hyperproduction of intraocular fluid. In eyes with stationary myopia, hyperproduction is fully compensated by improvement of aqueous outflow from the eye. In eyes with progressive myopia, ophthalmic hypertension takes place because of insufficient improvement of the outflow facility coefficient. It is likely that working hyperemia of the ciliary body and hyperproduction of intraocular fluid under conditions of visual work at near can be realized as a factor of myopization of the human eye in case of a certain predisposition: in eyes with a not fully formed angle of the anterior chamber or in eyes with anomalous development of the angle.     

The effectiveness of combining scleroplasty with ultrasonic activation of the filtering zone of the anterior chamber angle in progressive myopia

A new method for treatment of progressive myopia is developed that includes simultaneous action on both components of the leading pathogenetic link of myopization: "intraocular pressure--durable properties of the sclera". The method includes a combination of sclera-enhancing operations (administration of auto- or allotissue into the sub-Tenon's space of the posterior segment of the eye) with microhypotensive action (ultrasonic activation of the filtration zone of the anterior chamber angle). A comparison of results after 30 operations of common retrosclerosealing with those after 30 operations of retrosclerosealing in combination with acoustic hypotensive action (the follow-up period--4 years) has shown that in patients with acoustic hypotension the level of intraocular pressure fell by 2.9 mm Hg, this being 1.2 mm Hg higher than after common retrosclerosealing. In case of common retrosclerosealing myopia progressed in 10% of patients and in its combination with acoustic hypotensive action further progression of myopia was not recorded.     

Ethnic differences in age-related changes of postpartum hemoglobin levels

Objective  

Postpartum hemoglobin (Hb) levels may impact maternal and breast-fed newborn well being and health. Yet, the sources of variation in maternal postpartum Hb levels are poorly understood. We set to investigate whether age has an effect on postpartum Hb levels, and if this effect is similar in different ethnic groups.
