The temporo-spatial expression profiles of the myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) and galactosylcerebrosides (Gal-CBs) were analysed during Schwann cell differentiation and myelination in Schwann cell cultures and in dorsal root ganglion/Schwann cell cocultures. The temporal expression profiles demonstrate that the mechanisms triggering and regulating MAG and Gal-CBs are different and independent. They also provide further support for a role of MAG, but not Gal-CBs, in the establishment of the Schwann cell/axon interaction and in the formation of the primary mesaxon, while both MAG and Gal-CBs may participate in the further maturation of the mesaxon. The spatial expression profiles demonstrate that although Gal-CBs are concentrated in the same structures (mesaxonal spirals, paranodes and Schmidt-Lanterman incisures) as MAG in both developing and mature sheaths, where it is therefore possible that the two might have complementary functions, they are also present in regions from which MAG is excluded.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There are few reports on mobility limitations in persons with psychotic disorder although restrictions in mobility may aggravate the general functional limitations of these patients. Our aim was to investigate mobility limitations among subjects with psychotic disorder in a general population-based sample. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 6,927 persons aged 30 and older self-reported mobility limitations in an interview and was examined in performance tests. Diagnostic assessment of DSM-IV psychotic disorders combined SCID interview and case note data. Lifetime-ever diagnoses of psychotic disorder were classified into schizophrenia, other nonaffective psychotic disorders and affective psychoses. RESULTS: Self-reported mobility limitations were highly prevalent in persons with schizophrenia and other nonaffective psychosis, but not in the affective psychosis group. After adjusting for age and sex, persons with schizophrenia and other nonaffective psychoses but not affective psychoses had significantly increased odds of having both self-reported and test-based mobility limitations as well as weak muscle strength. Schizophrenia remained an independent predictor of mobility limitations even after controlling for lifestyle-related factors and chronic medical conditions. Among persons with nonaffective psychoses, higher levels of negative symptoms predicted mobility limitations. CONCLUSION: Self-reported mobility limitations are prevalent already at a young age in persons with schizophrenia and other nonaffective psychotic disorders, and among older persons with these disorders both self-reported limitations and measured performance tests show lower capacity in mobility. Difficulties in mobility are associated with negative symptoms. Mental health care professionals should pay attention to mobility limitations in persons with psychotic disorder.  相似文献

Background  

Dietary fatty acids may modulate inflammation in macrophages of the atherosclerotic plaque, affecting its stability. The n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) arachidonic acid (AA) generally promotes inflammation, while the PUFAs of the n-3 series eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are considered anti-inflammatory. We determined how these PUFAs influence MMP-9 expression and secretion by the human monocytic cell line (MonoMac 6) at baseline and after 24-hour exposure. MMP-9 protein was measured by zymography and relative levels of MMP-9 mRNA were determined using quantitative real time PCR.  相似文献

Current diagnostic taxonomies (ICD-10, DSM-IV) emphasize normal acquisition of language in Asperger syndrome (AS). Although many linguistic sub-skills may be fairly normal in AS there are also contradictory findings. There are only few studies examining language skills of children with AS in detail. The aim of this study was to study language performance in children with AS and their age, sex and IQ matched controls. Children with AS had significantly lower scores in the subtest of Comprehension of Instructions. Results showed that although many linguistic skills may develop normally, comprehension of language may be affected in children with AS. The results suggest that receptive language processes should be studied in detail in children with AS.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to compare women with cosmetic breast implants with population controls to examine health-related quality of life. A questionnaire including quality-of-life questions was mailed to 399 Finnish women who had had cosmetic breast implants during the years 1973-2002. The response rate of the study was 85. Results were compared with average Finnish women from a representative population sample. There were no differences in total score of health-related quality of life between women with breast implants and controls. Women with breast implants had lower health-related quality of life in dimensions of distress and sexual activity and partly also in dimensions of sleeping and mental function when compared with controls. On the other hand, operated women reported significantly less discomfort and symptoms than controls. Differences in health-related quality of life between women with breast implants and controls were largest in dimensions of distress, sexual activity, sleeping, and symptoms.  相似文献

AimThe aim of the present study was to clarify prognostic role of angiogenesis in epithelial ovarian cancer.MethodsQuantification of angiogenesis was performed by the Chalkley method after immunostaining of 175 epithelial ovarian cancer specimens with an antibody against CD34.ResultsThe Chalkley count was categorised into two groups according to the median value: low <8 or high ⩾8. The low Chalkley count correlated significantly with serous and clear cell histological subtype of the tumour (p < 0.0005), whereas there existed no association with FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) stage, histological grade, presence of primary residual tumour, age at diagnosis, or chemotherapy response. In univariate analysis, the high Chalkley count predicted poor overall survival in the subgroup of patients with FIGO stages III–IV tumours (p = 0.007) but not in the entire study cohort. However, in multivariate analysis, the Chalkley count was found to be an independent predictor of death from ovarian cancer in the entire study cohort (p = 0.044, RR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.01–2.21) as well as in the subgroup of FIGO stages III–IV tumours (p = 0.046, RR = 1.58, 95% CI 1.01–2.46) together with the presence of primary residual tumour (p < 0.0005, RR = 5.10, 95% CI 3.02–8.62, and p = 0.002, RR = 4.28, 95% CI 1.34–13.73, respectively).ConclusionsThe Chalkley count seems to be suitable for evaluation of angiogenesis and to have prognostic significance in ovarian cancer.  相似文献

Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS1) plays a paramount role in liver ureagenesis since it catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step of the urea cycle, the major pathway for nitrogen disposal in humans. CPS1 deficiency (CPS1D) is an autosomal recessive inborn error which leads to hyperammonemia due to mutations in the CPS1 gene, or is caused secondarily by lack of its allosteric activator NAG.Proteolytic, immunological and structural data indicate that human CPS1 resembles Escherichia coli CPS in structure, and a 3D model of CPS1 has been presented for elucidating the pathogenic role of missense mutations. Recent availability of CPS1 expression systems also can provide valuable tools for structure–function analysis and pathogenicity-testing of mutations in CPS1. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive compilation of clinical CPS1 mutations, and discuss how structural knowledge of CPS enzymes in combination with in vitro analyses can be a useful tool for diagnosis of CPS1D.  相似文献

Background  

Falls are an alarming health problem and a major cause of injury among the elderly. The healthcare cost associated with falls is considerable. Visual acuity has been found to be an independent risk factor for falls; however, the results are not unanimous. Moreover, other aspects of visual function such as visual field, contrast sensitivity and depth perception have not been adequately investigated in relation to falls. The aim of this study, therefore, was to determine the relationship between visual function, duration, and main causes of visual impairment, and falls in individuals with low vision.  相似文献

Previous epidemiologic studies that have examined the relationship between renal cell carcinoma (RCC) risk and intakes of plant foods and antioxidant nutrients have yielded inconsistent results. We therefore examined the associations between intakes of fruit, vegetables, carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamin E and vitamin C and RCC risk in the Alpha‐Tocopherol, Beta‐Carotene Cancer Prevention (ATBC) Study cohort. At baseline, 27,062 male Finnish smokers aged 50–69 years completed a 276‐item dietary questionnaire that included questions on frequency of consumption and portion size. During up to 19 years of follow‐up, 255 men developed RCC. Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to estimate relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Despite a large range in intake, no association was observed between fruit, vegetables or antioxidant nutrients and RCC risk. For example, multivariate RRs and 95% CIs for the highest versus the lowest quartile of intake were 0.79 (0.55–1.14), 1.23 (0.85–1.79), 1.09 (0.74–1.60), 0.83 (0.57–1.21), 1.09 (0.73–1.64) and 0.99 (0.67–1.46) for fruit, vegetables, total carotenoids, total flavonoids, total vitamin E and vitamin C, respectively (all p values for trend > 0.05). Our results indicate that diet may not play a large role in the etiology of RCC in male smokers, although further examination of these associations in nonsmokers, women and diverse racial populations is warranted.  相似文献
