Glucocorticoids in patients with tumors of the adrenal cortex

Basal concentrations of plasma cortisol (F), corticosterone (B) and 11-desoxycortisol (S) and urinary excretion of glucocorticoids (17-OCS, F and B) were investigated in 50 patients with verified hormonally active adrenocortical tumors; 78 patients with Itsenko-Cushing disease (ICD) and 30 healthy controls of respective age were investigated in parallel with them. It was shown that judging by the nature of secretion, corticosteroma, corticoandrosteroma and androsteroma were mixed-type tumors producing the main glucocorticoids at substantial quantities. The levels of hormones did not differ considerably in patients with the above tumor types. When comparing patients with tumors and ICD a high basal concentration of B was found in the blood of tumor patients. In adenoma and ICD the blood and urinary level of glucocorticoids increased 2-3-fold, in malignant tumors it increased 3-5-fold and more. A noticeable rise of the blood concentration of S in a confirmed diagnosis of a tumor pointed to its malignant nature with a high degree of probability.     

Effect of the combined action of rimantidine and dimethylsulfoxide on phage reproduction

The effect of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and rimantidine on the reproduction of phages T-3, T-4, T-7, and were studied singly and in combination. Maximal activation of reproduction of phages T-3 and T-7 by DMSO was observed during the first 6 min of the latent period. Meanwhile this compound had no action on reproduction of phages T-4 and , a result attributable to the use of intracellular RNA polymerase by these phages. DMSO was shown to stimulate synthesis of the DNA of phage T-3, evidently through its action on phage RNA polymerase. During the combined action of these compounds, partial blocking of their mutually opposite action on the synthesis of phage macromolecules and total abolition of the inhibitory action of remantidine on the yield of infectious phage T-3 were observed.Presented by Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR N. A clinico-experimental study of the innervation of the teeth and gingivae

Clinical studies of changes in dental electric excitability before and after torus anesthesia and cat and monkey experiments with the use of morphohistochemical technique of detecting horseradish peroxidase (a marker) in Gasser's ganglion [correction of Hasser's node] 72 hrs following the marker administration into canine, incisor, and gingival cavities have revealed no cross innervation of the teeth and gingiva at the level of the peripheral component of the trigeminal nerve branches.     

Radiofrequency-assisted atypical resections of the liver for the colorectal cancer metastases

The authors presented direct results of atypical resections of the liver for the colorectal cancer metastases fulfilled on 55 patients with the application of radiofrequency apparatus for the period from 2006 through 2010. The method used resulted in creation of 2.0 cm coagulation area which allowed dissection of the liver tissue practically without bleeding.
