Anesthesia in the surgical treatment of fractures of the proximal end of the femur

The article generalizes experience in anesthesiological management of 178 elderly and old-aged patients with fractures of the proximal segment of the femur in endoprosthesis with a Mura-Cito prosthesis, 3-flange nail, Shesterni's fixation device, arched nail, etc. In contrast to endotracheal anesthesia and local anesthesia with neuroleptanalgesia potentiation, prolonged epidural anesthesia in 51 patients produced adequate intra- and postoperative anesthesia without causing respiratory complications and depression and facilitated early activation of the patient. Prolonged epidural anesthesia had advantages over other types of anesthesia in this category of patients.     

Heterophile antigens of organisms causing particularly dangerous infections and their action on human intestinal tissues

To detect heterophile antigens similar to those of human small intestinal tissue in organisms responsible for particularly dangerous infections, strains varying in their degree of virulence were used:Vibrio cholerae Vibrio El Tor, vibrios of Heiberg's VI group, water-inhabiting and nonagglutinating vibrios, and virulent and avirulent strain ofPasteurella pestis. Heterophile antigens were detected in strains ofV. cholrae, V. El Tor, nonagglutinating vibrios with the ability to cause cholera, and in the virulent strain,P. pestis 232. No reaction was obtained with all the other strains tested.     

A comparative study of the action of a living culture of bacillus prodigiosus (serratia marcescens) and its products on the growth of a brown-pearce tumor in rabbits

Summary A polysaccharide containing fraction was isolated from B. prodigiosus; when injected intravenously this fraction provoked hemorrhagic changes in a Brown-Pearce tumor inoculated intratesticularly in the rabbit. However, the living culture of this microorganism (administered by the same method) possessed a more effective-suppressive effect on the growth of Brown-Pearce tumors than the culture killed by heating, or its polysaccharide fraction.Presented by Active Member AMN SSSR, N.
