Oxygen effect in the therapy of lung cancer]

Nine lung cancer patients were subjected preoperatively to radiotherapy under hypoxia with inhaling of GHM-10 (gas hypoxic mixture). The patients were followed up during 7--12 months. The results obtained evidence the rationality of further studies in this direction, that is of special importance due to introducing of reconstructive--plastic operations on the trachea and bronchi into oncological practice. Thus, there will be a possibility to preserve, in some cases, a porton of the lung. Since the functional status of the lung after surgical and radiation treatment is of primary importance for the duration of patients' survival, the lung tissue protection from side-effects of radiation in irradiating lung tumors may offer good perspectives.     

Changes in the phagocytic activity of leukocytes in patients with acute appendicitis]

The phagocytic activity of leucocytes in different forms of acute appendicitis in 126 patients has been studied. The phagocytic activity of leucocytes in patients with acute appendicitis a day after the operation was found to be reduced, a decrease being more pronounced in patients with a gangrenous form. It is felt that, although not being a specific reaction, the phagocytosis indices along with other clinical and laboratory investigations reflect the status of protective forces of the organism and contribute to recognition of associated complications.     

Results of treatment of Cushing's syndrome with chloditane and large doses of reserpine

To inhibit corticotropic function of the pituitary and glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex in the treatment of 41 patients with Icenko-Cushing's disease, use was made of the steroidogenesis inhibitor chloditane and high doses of reserpine. The treatment data were compared to the effect of chloditane alone in 40 patients. Inclusion of reserpine into the complex of therapeutic measures led to an appreciable decrease in corticotropin secretion which increased again shortly after the drug discontinuation. The clinical results of the treatment were comparable to those attained with administration of chloditane alone. The majority of patients manifested recurrent disease 3 to 12 months after the treatment was discontinued. Therefore, administration of reserpine as an additional means in the treatment was discontinued. Therefore, administration of reserpine as an additional means in the treatment of Icenko-Cushing's disease by chloditane with a view of a steady inhibition of corticotropic function of the pituitary and the prophylaxis of recurrencies is not desirable. High doses of reserpine may be recommended at the initial stages of the disease treatment in the presence of an extremely high level of blood plasma corticotropin.     

The effect of a live culture of B. Prodigiosus on transplanted tumors in experimental animals

Summary Intraperitoneal inoculation of three different strains of live cultures of B. prodigiosus led to a varying regression of rat sarcoma M-1 injected subcutaneously. In rabbits inoculated intratesticularly with a Brown-Pierce tumor, there was observed a complete destruction of the malignancy, the large majority of the animals surviving for 8 months and more.Presented by Acad.
