An electrophysiological study of conduction in the auditory nerve and brainstem auditory pathways using the brainstem auditory evoked potential was undertaken in a group of 47 leprosy patients. There were no statistically significant differences between mean conduction times (interpeak latencies) in the leprosy and the control groups. Abnormal interpeak latencies were encountered in 3 leprosy patients, 1 of whom had a positive serological test for syphilis. In the remaining 2 patients, caudal pathway dysfunction (I-III interpeak latency abnormality) was indicated but specific auditory nerve involvement (an abnormally prolonged I-II interpeak latency) was not demonstrated. The delipidified component of the insoluble portion which presumably is the cell wall of Mycobacterium leprae (DCW) was able to induce lymphocyte proliferation in the leucocyte culture from the peripheral blood of lepromatous leprosy patients. Normally these cells show no lymphocyte proliferation in response to M. leprae or their sonicated extract. The delipidified component (DCW) appears to be proteinaceous and able to induce antibodies in rabbit. The DCW has affinity to the sera from lepromatous leprosy patients but not sera from normal healthy individuals or tuberculoid leprosy patients. The ability to induce lymphocyte proliferation is blocked by agglutination of DCW with patient sera, heat treatment of DCW or protease treatment of the component. Along with lymphocyte proliferation, DCW also induces ability in the macrophages to render phagocytosed M. leprae non viable. Thus it is proposed that DCW of M. leprae could be a potent immunomodulator for immunedeficient cells of leprosy patients. The efficacy of DCW as a probable immunoprotector for M. leprae infection in mice has already been demonstrated earlier. 相似文献

Artemisinin is a novel antimalarial drug isolated in China from the wormwood plant Artemisia annua L. Studies with rodent malaria were carried out to detect antagonism and synergism with a variety of antimalarial drugs. Isobolograms of drug interaction were plotted at the ED90 level. With a normally susceptible strain of Plasmodium berghei, marked potentiative synergism was found with mefloquine, tetracycline and spiramycin. There was some synergism also with primaquine. Combinations of artemisinin with dapsone, sulfadiazine, sulfadoxine, pyrimethamine, pyrimethamine/sulfadoxine and cycloguanil showed antagonism. A high degree of potentiation was shown between artemisinin and primaquine with a primaquine-resistant strain, whilst the combination with mefloquine showed enhanced potentiation with a mefloquine-resistant strain. Combinations of artemisinin with mefloquine, primaquine, tetracycline or clindamycin showed marked potentiation with an artemisinin-resistant strain. Parents and children who have been prescribed an Epipen are often unable to demonstrate its correct administration. One contributory factor may be that doctors are unfamiliar with the EpiPen and are unable to demonstrate the correct administration of the pen to the family. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of correct EpiPen demonstration by junior and Senior Medical Staff at a major tertiary paediatric Hospital. Junior and Senior medical staff were scored on their ability to correctly use the EpiPen trainer. A 6 step scoring system was used. One-hundred doctors were recruited (Residents n = 31, Senior Residents n = 39, Fellow/Consultants n = 30). Junior and Senior Medical staff had similar scores for EpiPen demonstration, the number that needed to read the EpiPen instructions prior to use and the frequancy of accidental self-injection into the thumb. Only two doctors (2%) demonstrated all 6 administration steps correctly. The most frequent errors made were not holding the pen in place for >5 seconds (57%), failure to apply pressure to activate (21%), and self-injection into the thumb (16%). Ninety five doctors needed to read the instructions, and of these, only 39 (41%) then proceeded to correctly demonstrate the remaining 5 steps. Forty-five doctors had previously dispensed an EpiPen, but only three demonstrated its use to parents/children with a trainer. The majority of doctors do not know how to use an Epipen and are unable to provide appropriate education to parents/children. Forty patients with actinic cheilitis were treated with one of four modalities: topical fluorouracil, chemical peel with trichloroacetic acid, lip shave, or carbon dioxide laser ablation of the vermilion. Patients treated with lip shave or carbon dioxide laser ablation had no recurrence of the problem during a 4-year period. While the lip shave procedure offers the advantage of histologic examination of the specimen, the patients treated with the laser ablation had fewer postoperative complications. 相似文献

Thirteen patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) undergoing transfusion therapy and 8 control patients were examined by magnetic resonance imaging to discriminate bone marrow change due to iron deposition from hematologic marrow hyperplasia. Using T1-weighted spin echo images, only two subjects showed extremely low signal intensity marrow compatible with iron deposition. However, using T2-weighted fast spin echo images with fat suppression, cranial bone marrow in SCD patients with transfusion therapy showed considerably lower signal than that of controls. The main cause of marrow signal decrease in SCD patients with transfusion therapy was considered to be iron deposition due to repeated transfusion therapy rather than red marrow hyperplasia. 相似文献

Ingested matter can have a significant effect on whole body metal concentration measurements in Mytilus edulis. Depuration of mussels in clean seawater for 36 h prior to dissection eliminates most of these contaminating gut contents. Depuration followed by metal analyses is the most direct method of determining mussel tissue metal bioburdens. After being transplanted into a plume of primary treated sewage effluent in Salem Harbor, Massachusetts for 32 days, Al, Cr, and Fe concentrations in depurated mussels were significantly lower than those determined for either non-depurated mussels or for depurated mussels to which fecal concentrations of Al, Cr, and Fe were added back in. Although mathematical methods developed by both Ouellette (1978) and Boehm et al. (1988) could be applied to non-depurated mussels in order to correct for errors associated with gut metal contamination, these indirect methods were not as reliable as depuration prior to analysis. 相似文献

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of rat and hamster have been studied extensively and shown to play critical roles in circadian rhythmicity. [125I]Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) binding levels are high in the rat SCN, suggesting that VIP receptors may be an important component of SCN function. In contrast to previously demonstrated diurnal variations in VIP immunoreactivity and VIP mRNA, the present study found [125I]VIP binding to be stable across the light-dark cycle in both rat and hamster SCN. High [125I]VIP labeling appeared to be coextensive with the rat SCN but extended somewhat beyond the cytoarchitectonic boundaries of the hamster SCN. Binding density in hamster SCN was slightly higher than in rat. In the developing rat SCN, [125I]VIP binding levels distinguished the SCN on embryonic day 18, and appeared to increase to postnatal day 10 before declining to adult levels. The early presence of [125I]VIP binding suggests possible involvement of VIP receptors in fetal entrainment of circadian rhythms. 相似文献
