This study uses data from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) surveys to examine the strength of the association between psychotic symptoms and violent behaviour, controlling for underlying mental disorder, substance abuse, sociodemographic characteristics and use of mental health services, in a representative sample of community residents. A replication is conducted of a study that found an increased risk of violence associated with a particular cluster of psychotic symptoms involving perceived threat and internal control-override (TCO). Respondents who reported TCO symptoms were about twice as likely to engage in assaultive behaviour as those with hallucinations or other psychotic symptoms, and about five times as likely as those with no mental disorder. The combination of substance use disorders with TCO symptoms added significantly to the risk of violent behaviour. Those with a history of using mental health services also posed a higher risk of violence, probably due to the differential selection of more severely ill and ‘dangerous’ individuals into treatment settings. Both chronic microgravity exposure and long‐duration bed rest induce cardiac atrophy, which leads to reduced standing stroke volume and orthostatic intolerance. However, despite the fact that women appear to be more susceptible to post‐spaceflight presyncope and orthostatic hypotension than male astronauts, most previous high‐resolution studies of cardiac morphology following microgravity have been performed only in men. Because female athletes have less physiological hypertrophy than male athletes, we reasoned that they also might have altered physiological cardiac atrophy after bed rest. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 24 healthy young women (32.1±4 years) to measure left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) mass, volumes, and morphology accurately before and after 60 days of 6° head‐down tilt (HDT) bed rest. Subjects were matched and then randomly assigned to sedentary bed rest (controls, n=8) or two treatment groups consisting of (1) exercise training using supine treadmill running within lower body negative pressure plus resistive training (n=8), or (2) protein (0.45 g/kg/day increase) plus branched‐chain amino acid (BCAA) (7.2 g/day) supplementation (n=8). After sedentary bed rest without nutritional supplementation, there were significant reductions in LV (96±26–77±25 mL; P=0.03) and RV volumes (104±33–86±25 mL; P=0.02), LV (2.2±0.2–2.0±0.2 g/kg; P=0.003) and RV masses (0.8±0.1–0.6±0.1 g/kg; P<0.001), and the length of the major axis of the LV (90±6–84±7 mm. P<0.001), similar to what has been observed previously in men (8.0%; Perhonen M.A., Franco F., Lane L.D., Buckey J.C., Blomqvist Zerwekh J.E., Peshock R.M., Weatherall P.T., Levine B.D. J Appl Physiol 2001: 91: 645–653). In contrast, there were no significant reductions in LV or RV volumes in the exercise‐trained group, and the length of the major axis was preserved. Moreover, there were significant increases in LV (1.9±0.4–2.3±0.3 g/kg; P<0.001) and RV masses (0.7±0.1–0.8±0.2 g/kg; P=0.002), as well as mean wall thickness (9±2–11±1 mm; P=0.02). The interaction between sedentary and exercise LV and RV masses was highly significant (P<0.0001). Protein and BCAA supplementation led to an intermediate phenotype with no change in LV or RV mass after bed rest, but there remained a significant reduction in LV volume (103±14–80±16 mL; P=0.02) and major‐axis length (91±5–88±7 mm; P=0.003). All subjects lost an equivalent amount of body mass (3.4±0.2 kg control; 3.1±0.04 kg exercise; 2.8±0.1 kg protein). Cardiac atrophy occurs in women similar to men following sedentary 60 days HDT bed rest. However, exercise training and, to a lesser extent, protein supplementation may be potential countermeasures to the cardiac atrophy associated with chronic unloading conditions such as in spaceflight and prolonged bed rest.  相似文献

Reports in the literature suggest that the primary sensory neurons of the olfactory system may provide a direct route of entry for agents into the central nervous system (CNS). To investigate whether cadmium, a heavy metal which is normally excluded from the CNS by the blood-brain barrier, can enter the CNS via the olfactory system, rats were exposed either intranasally (unilaterally) or ip to 109Cd (1 mumol Cd labeled with 1 microCi 109Cd). Rats were allowed to survive 7 days, at which point they were euthanized and the kidneys, livers, right and left forebrains, right and left olfactory bulbs, and right and left olfactory epithelia were removed. Tissues were placed in scintillation vials and radioactivity counted. In rats exposed by intranasal instillation, Cd levels were significantly elevated in the kidney, liver and ipsilateral olfactory bulb and epithelium, but not in the contralateral bulb and epithelium or forebrain areas. With the ip exposure, Cd levels were only elevated in the kidney and liver. In a second study the protocol was repeated (without ip exposure), but the olfactory bulbs and epithelium were washed in EDTA before counting. Cd was still present in the bulbs after washing, suggesting that the metal was internal and not bound to the external membrane. In the final experiment, both time course and dose effect of this phenomenon were explored. Background Despite considerable interest in the genetic, physical and neurological aspects of Rett syndrome (RS), there have been few studies of associated behavioural and emotional features. Furthermore, few case studiesor surveys have included adult women with RS. The main aim of the present study was to compare behaviour problems in a sample of women with RS against data from normative samples. Methods The primary carers of 50 women with RS completed the community version of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist. Results Women with RS were rated as having lower levels of irritability, hyperactivity and inappropriate speech behaviours than normative samples of adults with intellectual disability. Conclusions A number of factors may affect the presentation of behaviour problems in women with RS (e.g. cognitive impairments or physical disabilities). Therefore, more research is needed in order to generate information about the behavioural phenotype of RS. The implications of the present data for future research are also discussed.  相似文献

The liver, skeletal muscle, and adrenal gland obtained from two nine-banded armadillos infected with Mycobacterium leprae were studied using an electron microscope. M. leprae were found in varying numbers inside hepatocytes, Kupffer's cells, striated muscle cells, adrenal cortical and adrenal medullary cells, endothelial cells, and macrophages. There was evidence to suggest that M. leprae were actively phagocytosed by the liver and skeletal muscle cells. The inert nature of M. leprae and its behavior as an almost ideal parasite of parenchymal cells are emphasized. The question of whether this unique parasitism of parenchymal cells and the possible processing and presentation of M. leprae antigens by these cells could be responsible for aberrant immune responses is raised.  相似文献

The kinetics of antibody responses of Mycobacterium leprae-infected armadillos to phenolic glycolipid-I (PGL-I) were studied by means of ELISA. The levels of both IgG and IgM antibodies to PGL-I increased with time. Some animals were less susceptible to disseminations of M. leprae infection and lived longer than others. These animals had high absorbance values (greater than 0.7) for IgG anti-PGL-I compared to more susceptible armadillos that had lower absorbance values for IgG anti-PGL-I.  相似文献

Substance abuse testing and treatment programs for adolescents using drugs are receiving increased attention on high school campuses. Many policymakers question drug testing and the treatment models for adolescent substance abusers. This paper explores the impact of drug testing. Treatment models and approaches for substance abuse are presented. It is recommended that treatment counselors explore drug testing in relationship to treatment models for substance use. We advise counselors to consider comprehensive programs for adolescents based on their belief systems and values assigned to moral, medical and social models of treatment.  相似文献
