Objective To assess the accuracy of several published equations for predicting basal metabolic rate (BMR) in older women.
Design BMR was assessed in 116 healthy, older white women, aged 60 to 82 years, on three successive mornings by indirect calorimetry. Body composition was determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry or hydrostatic weighing. The measured BMRs were compared with values obtained from eight published prediction equations that used solely, or in various combinations, measures of height, weight, fat-free mass, age, and menopausal status.
Statistical analyses performed The root mean squared prediction error (RMSPE) was used to determine how accurately predicted BMR matched actual BMR for each subject. In addition, regression analysis was used to evaluate accuracy of predicted BMR vs directly measured BMR.
Results Predicted mean BMR determined using all eight equations was significantly correlated to measured BMR (P=.0001), accounting for 30% to 52% of the variance of measured BMR. When analyzed by RMSPE, however, the equations of Owen et al (1986), Fredrix et al (1990), and Harris-Benedict (1919) predicted actual BMR for each subject within an average of 116 kcal/day, and the equation of Cunningham (1980) resulted in the largest prediction error at 208 kcal/day.
Applications/conclusions The regression equations of Owen et al (1986), which used body weight, Fredrix et al (1990), which used body weight and age, and Harris-Benedict (1919), which used age, weight, and height as variables, were most accurate in predicting BMR in our sample of healthy older women. The beta-amyloid (Abeta) precursor protein (APP) is cleaved sequentially by beta-site of APP-cleaving enzyme (BACE) and gamma-secretase to release the Abeta peptides that accumulate in plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD). GGA1, a member of the Golgi-localized gamma-ear-containing ARF-binding (GGA) protein family, interacts with BACE and influences its subcellular distribution. We now report that overexpression of GGA1 in cells increased the APP C-terminal fragment resulting from beta-cleavage but surprisingly reduced Abeta. GGA1 confined APP to the Golgi, in which fluorescence resonance energy transfer analyses suggest that the proteins come into close proximity. GGA1 blunted only APP but not notch intracellular domain release. These results suggest that GGA1 prevented APP beta-cleavage products from becoming substrates for gamma-secretase. Direct binding of GGA1 to BACE was not required for these effects, but the integrity of the GAT (GGA1 and TOM) domain of GGA1 was. GGA1 may act as a specific spatial switch influencing APP trafficking and processing, so that APP-GGA1 interactions may have pathophysiological relevance in AD. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the success of the Southeast Asian Health Project in terms of client satisfaction with the prenatal care and other services. To obtain additional data about Southeast Asian women's health practices regarding childbearing. DESIGN: Survey through questionnaires administered as interviews. SETTING: In clients' homes or via telephone. PARTICIPANTS: 119 women from SEAHP's case files of recently delivered clients. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Interviews were conducted by four community workers fluent in Cambodian or Lao. The majority of women were satisfied with SEAHP, particularly the interpretation and education in native languages. Women were also satisfied with SEAHP, encouraging others to seek care. CONCLUSIONS: SEAHP appears to meet prenatal care needs of Southeast Asian women in Long Beach, California. More objective outcome data await analyses, but the program's approach may ensure access to and use of health services. 相似文献
Objectives:To assess the clinical outcomes of frozen-thawed blastocysts transfer in natural and hormonally controlled cycles. Methods:A retrospective analysis of natural and hormonally controlled cycle for 246 frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer cycles, the clinical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, early abortion rate were compared. Results:Of the 192 hormonally controlled cycles, the cancel rate, clinical pregnancy rate per ET,implantation rate and abortion rate were 7.3%(14/192),53.9%(96/178),38.8%(131/338)and 11.5%(11/96)respectively,whereas in 54 natural cycles, these rates were 16.7%(9/54),68.9%(31/45),52.9%(45/85)and 16.1%(5/31)respectively.There was no significant difference between the two groups with regard to the clinical pregnancy and abortion rate per ET,but the cancel rate and implantation rate were higher in natural cycles. However, the pregnancy and implantation rates of patients without PCOS in hormonal control cycles(57.2%,40.9%)were similar with those in natural cycles(P>0.05).Conclusion:These findings suggested that both hormonally controlled and natural cycles had similar pregnancy outcomes in frozen-thawed blastocysts transfer. 相似文献
The benefits of regular physical activity in older persons are numerous and well established. Regular physical activity in
older adults is associated with an overall improvement in health, functional capacity, quality of life, and independence.
Many questions arise for healthcare providers regarding an older person’s ability and motivation to be physically active.
The healthcare provider has a unique opportunity to assess the older client’s incentives, preferences, and abilities for physical
activities, as well as to prescribe a safe, appropriate, and enjoyable exercise plan. The exercise precription can be simple
yet thorough enough to ensure benefits in an older person’s health and functional capacity. 相似文献
