Bilateral popliteal vein aneurysms

An 82-year-old man was admitted with a left hip fracture sustained in a fall. The fracture was surgically repaired. Ipsilateral leg swelling developed over the following 2 weeks. A lower extremity venous duplex scan demonstrated isolated dilatation of the popliteal veins in both lower extremities. Chronic thrombosis was noted in both popliteal veins at the level of this dilatation. Initial duplex scanning also revealed acute thrombus in the left popliteal, posterior tibial, and peroneal veins. A repeat scan 1 week later identified propagation of thrombus into the superficial femoral vein. Popliteal vein aneurysms, although rare, can cause significant morbidity and mortality. Filaments of Trypanosoma brucei: some notes on differences in origin and structure in two strains of Trypanosoma (Trypanozoon) brucei rhodesiense.

Filaments attached to trypanosomes of two strains of T. (T.) brucei were studied by electron microscopy and two distinct types identified: short-thick and long-thin. The former are associated with stumpy trypanosomes and are secretions, via the flagellar pocket, which originate in the area of the Golgi complex, during the infection of the host. They are referred to as 'secretory filaments'. Their diameter is 0.09 to 0.14 mum. The long-thin filaments are associated with slender forms of trypanosome in various artificial situations; those shown by negative staining are believed to be cytoplasmic extrusions from the anatomically weak extremities of the parasite and are referred to as 'plasmanemes'. Their diameter is 0.06 mum. Both types appear to maintain their structure without the aid of the normal type of unit membrane as myelin formations.     

A retrospective comparison of two drug regimens RHE2/RH10 and RHZ2/RH10 in the treatment of tuberculous mediastinal lymphadenopathy

A retrospective radiographic comparison of two regimens, RHE2/RH10 (n = 32) and RHZ2/RH10 (n = 37), used in the treatment of tuberculous mediastinal lymphadenopathy is reported. The two groups did not differ in age, pretreatment or post-treatment values. The rate of improvement in serial radiographs was compared between the two groups, each patient acting as his own control. There was no difference in the incidence of initial gland enlargement at 1 month, but at 2 months RHZ2/RH10 had less enlargement (0.05 greater than P greater than 0.01). The rate of improvement was faster in the RHZ2/RH10 group from 2-7 months' treatment, being significantly better than RHE2/RH10 at 2 (P = 0.003), 5 (0.01 greater than P) and 7 months (0.02 greater than P). Pyrazinamide (25-40 mg/kg) appears to be superior to ethambutol 15 mg/kg for the initial 2 months of treatment of tuberculous mediastinal lymphadenopathy. The findings may be applicable to peripheral tuberculous lymphadenopathy.     

Immune complex glomerulonephritis and chronic anaerobic urinary infection--complications of filariasis

We describe a patient with chyluria due to abdominal Bancroftian filariasis. The patient showed two unusual complications, an immune complex glomerulonephritis and a chronic urinary infection. We also discuss the use of the CT whole body scanner in the diagnosis and delineation of the extent of the disease.

外源性AA引起兔动脉条收缩,呈剂量依赖性;EPA抑制AA收缩血管亦呈浓度依赖性;DHA对AA收缩血管作用无明显影响。破坏血管内皮后AA收缩血管作用大为减弱,EPA抑制AA收缩血管作用也几乎消失。吲哚美辛能阻断AA收缩兔主动脉条的作用。兔主动脉6-keto-PGF_1α、TXB₂及其比值随AA浓度升高而增加,低剂量EPA对前列腺素类代谢无明显影响,较大剂量时则降低上述指标。
