Cleft lip and palate is the most common among craniofacial malformations and causes several esthetic and functional implications that require rehabilitation. Background

The dentigerous cyst is usually defined as a cystic cavity that surrounds the crown of an unerupted tooth on the cementoenamel junction. The present article reports a case of an uncommon dentigerous cyst, highlighting its clinical, radiographic and surgical characteristics and discussing the aspects related to its development in infancy.

Case report

A 03-year-old boy patient presented with an extensive radiolucid area involving the crown of the right maxillary lateral incisor. A surgical excision was performed. Anatomopathological examination revealed a cystic tissue with a fibrous wall surrounded by nonkeratinized stratified squamous oral epithelium, without atypia.

Conclusion

It is possible that the dentigerous cyst grows in the dental germ in any stage of development and not only in the follicle of a tooth with calcified crown attached to the cementoenamel junction.  相似文献

Dens invaginatus is a rare developmental anomaly and its etiology remains controversial. Radicular dens invaginatus is an unusual dental anomaly. The aims of this paper are to report the radiographic and tomographic findings of a case of radicular dens invaginatus and to discuss the relevant features associated with this dental anomaly. A 16-year-old female was referred to a private oral radiology clinic for orthodontic evaluation. Radiographically, a morphological alteration to the root portion of the right mandibular first premolar and the presence of a discrete radiolucent periapical lesion were observed. The diagnosis was only elucidated after cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The CBCT images revealed enlargement of the root, and a dilated invagination with limited enamel that had its open site along the lateral portion of the root without evidence of buccal and lingual expansion. The diagnosis of radicular dens invaginatus was then established.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of low-power laser irradiation in the antioxidant enzymatic system of submandibular (SMG) and parotid (PG) salivary glands of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The animals were randomly divided into six groups: three diabetic groups (D0, D5, and D20) and three non-diabetic groups (C0, C5, and C20), according to laser dose received (0, 5, and 20 J/cm2, respectively). Areas of approximately 1 cm2 were demarcated in the salivary glands (each parotid and both submandibular glands) and after irradiated according to Simões et.al. (Lasers Med Sci 24:202–208, 2009). A diode laser (660 nm/100 mW) was used, with laser beam spot of 0.0177 cm2. The group treated with 5 J/cm2 laser dose was subjected to irradiation for 1 min and 4 s (total irradiation time) and the group treated with 20 J/cm2 laser dose was subjected to irradiation for 4 min and 16 s. Twenty-four hours after irradiation the animals were euthanized and the salivary glands were removed for biochemical analysis. The total antioxidant values (TA), the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase enzymes were determined. SOD and CAT activities, as well as TA were higher in SMG of irradiated diabetic rats. However, in SMG of non-diabetic rats, laser irradiation decreased TA values and led to an increase in the CAT activity. In addition, there was a decrease in the activity of CAT in PG of diabetic and non-diabetic animals after laser irradiation. According to the results of the present study, low-power laser irradiation can affect the enzymatic antioxidant system of salivary glands of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate immediate cell survival and distribution following different administration routes of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into naturally occurring tendon injuries. Ten million MSCs, labeled with technetium‐99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime, were implanted into 13 horses with naturally occurring tendon or ligament injuries intra‐lesionally, intravenously and by regional perfusion, and traced for up to 48 h using planar gamma scintigraphy. Labeling efficiencies varied between 1.8% and 18.5% (mean 9.3%). Cells were retained in the damaged area after intra‐lesional administration but only 24% of cells were still present within the tendon after 24 h. After intravenous injection, cells largely distributed to the lung fields, with no detectable cells in the tendon lesions. Significant labeling of the tendon lesions was observed in 11/12 horses following regional perfusion but at a lower level to intra‐lesional injection. The highest cell numbers were retained after intra‐lesional injection, although with considerable cell loss, while regional perfusion may be a viable alternative for MSC delivery. Cells did not “home” to damaged tendon in large numbers after intravenous administration. Cells were detected in the lungs most frequently after intravascular administration, although with no adverse effects. Low cell retention has important implications for designing effective clinical therapies for human clinical use. © 2013 Orthopaedic Research Society Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
